Chapter Text
Nat was grown now. Her mother was the drunk she always was, and now that she didn't need to stay in that god forsaken home, she didn't. However, she quickly realized if she planned to do anything besides leech off of other people, she'd need a job.
Being dirt poor resulted in her looking to everyone else's last resort. This is how she found herself walking into a completely unprofessional building, one that was more of a trailer than a building.
She didn't head in immediately, instead leaning against the empty space just next to the door. She pulled out a cigarette from her almost empty pack, fuck. She counted three, including the one she was holding. She knew she'd need to buy more soon, however, as cheap as they were, she still didn't have that money. If she planned on surviving on her own, she couldn't spend the three dollars she had to her name on shit she didn't truly need.
She lit the cigarette, an attempt to push down all of the issues that would come up in the near future, tilting her head down and closing her eyes until her brain regulated itself into a soothing static.
Shortly after, she heard the sound of a truck rolling into the same parking lot she was standing. The door of the truck opened, revealing another woman. She seemed to be the same age as Nat. She was taller, much taller in fact. Her skin was a bit darker, and her hair was longer, wavier.
As their eyes met, Nat looked away quickly. She was never much of a talker, this would just be another awkward conversation she had to sit through.
And of course this girl wasn't any different, she took the second-long eye contact as an invitation to approach Natalie.
“M'names Lottie, Lottie Matthews. Well, Charlotte Matthews.” She said as she extended her hand towards Nat, all while smiling brighter than you'd expect from any stranger.
“Natalie.” Nat responds, shaking her hand with the firm grip she was taught. She barely glanced up, doing it for the sake of respect and not finding any reason to keep going past that.
“Just Natalie? No last name? Nickname? Nothing?” The girl, Lottie, teases. Nat wasn't used to people being so…. outgoing. She she spent her time around people just as reserved as her, so this was a surprise. Especially from a stranger.
“Natalie Scatorccio. Nat, I guess.” She responded, meeting eyes with this new woman once again, however this time she didn't look away.
After a period of silence, Nats, soon to be boss finally arrived in a surprisingly well maintained car. He invited both of the girls in, revealing that they would be working together. They'd be staying at a camp, one would be assigned to tend to the camp, while the other would look after and protect the sheep. The one who kept the sheep would only return to camp to eat and to sleep.
Their new boss dismissed them quickly, the other woman left first, driving her beaten truck the opposite way Nat would walk. Nat was staying wherever she could, whenever she could.
