Work Text:
Cole stood at the mirror, looking at his reflection. He usually wouldn't have cut his hair so short, but he hasn't had much time to do it lately and really just wanted to get rid of it. He also didn't have to worry about what his father might say anymore, so that helped.
The only opinion he cared about was Kai's, and he wouldn't care too much about what Cole did with his hair, right?
Cole took one last look at his hair as he ran his hand along the top of his head, feeling the sharpness of the freshly cut ends. He sighed as he finally opened the door and left, flipping the lightswitch off behind him.
He nervously made his way back to his room, hoping not to be spotted by any of his teammates. He knew none of them would care about what Cole did with his hair, but he wasn't quite ready for them to see it.
He rounded the corner and saw his door. Peeking from below, he could see that his light was on. That meant Kai was waiting on the other side for him.
He took his final breath before pushing the door open. Kai was sitting on the edge of the bed, mindlessly scrolling on his phone. "Hey baby, how was your—" Kai looked up to where his boyfriend was standing, stopping his sentence abruptly.
"So," Cole started, reaching up to touch it. "What do you think?"
Kai's eyes lit up. He sat up, still looking at Cole with awe. He smiled as he aproached him, and placed his hand on the chest of the larger boy. "It looks really good."
The blush on Cole's cheeks quickly rose. "Yeah, you think?"
Kai smiled up at Cole as he used his free hand to grab onto Coles. "Yeah. I really do."
Cole scooped Kai into a hug, causing him to squeel slightly. "Cole, put me down!" Kai said as he laughed. Cole did not do that, and instead walked to his bed, Kai still firmly secured to his chest.
He lied him down softly in the bed before lying down next to him.
"You're a giant goofball, you know that, right?" Cole turned to his side and laid his head on Kai's chest. Kai, in response, wraped an arm around Cole's sholder and began softly playing with his hair. The two stayed like this for many minutes, simply enjoying eachothers company.
"So, why'd you cut it?" Kai asked softly. He waited patiently for an answer, briefly consitering that Cole might have fallen asleep.
He had not.
"Feeling anxious, I guess. I used to do it alot in highschool as a way to cope." Kai only hummed in response, still playing with the hair in front of him. "So, you really like it, huh?" Cole readjusted to look up into Kais eyes.
Kai chuckled softly. "I already told you," Kai started, taking a moment to kiss Coles forehead. "I think it's cute. A little uneven, but I can help with that later." Kai flashed Cole a cheeky grin as the dark haired boy felt his face flush.
"You're one to talk about uneven. Besides, you try cutting your hair in front of a bathroom mirror of a moving ship with kitchen scissors."
Kai scoffed, lovingly. "Excuse me? Who do you think I am? Have you even seen my hair?" Kai's grin only grew. Cole groaned. "I've been cutting mine and Nya's hair since I was 7. You've got nothing on me, pretty boy."
Cole turned away again, not wanting Kai to see how flustered his words made him. Kai sat up propperly now, causing Cole's body to sink slightly into the dip left behind by his boyfriends body. Cole yearned for Kai's warmth. He groaned as he shifted his body so he could see Kai.
Cole looked up at him, taking in his silhouette. Kai's hair was so dramatically different from his. Kai had uneven layers, some from battle and others intentional. The layers worked so well along side eachother though with the way he styled it each morning.
Cole liked Kais natural hair. When he wore it down, it reminded Cole of the sunrise. It was warm and inviting, a new view each morning. The way he styled it though brought out so much of the confidence that defined the young man.
Cole loves everything about Kai.
Kai looked back down at his boyfriend, the newly cut hair really starting to grow on him.
