“Did you hear? Thayer and Amber hooked up. Everyone's talking about it…” Giggles faded away down the hallway.
Amber sighed, putting her textbook back in her locker. She was the talk of the entire school. Well, her and Thayer both. She knew it had been a mistake hooking up at a party, where everyone would notice, but there was nothing she could do about it now. She had mixed feelings on the whole thing anyway. Thayer hadn’t magically changed into some perfect movie boyfriend. Speaking of, she was startled out of her thoughts by the sound of his fist hitting the locker, and she jumped back slightly.
There was a cut on his face. That was new, since the other night, at least. It looked nasty, actually.
“Did you get attacked by a werewolf?”
Thayer looked unimpressed. His face morphed into a frown. “Who’d you tell?”
“Tell what?”
“Don’t act stupid,” he groaned, burying his face in his hands. “It’s all I’ve heard all day. Do you wanna tell me how they found out?”
“We were at a party, Thayer. Someone just noticed us leaving together. I’ve gotta get to math class.” Amber began walking away, but Thayer grabbed her sleeve, pushing her against the locker.
“Stop it, you’re acting crazy,” Amber said indignantly.
“No, you need to stop it. Stop gossiping with your stupid girl friends, okay? You’re gonna get me into deep shit.”
“What? With who?”
“Just fucking stop it, alright?” He took a step back, giving her some space, before turning and storming off.
Asshole. Then again, he’d always been like that, and she knew it. But she just couldn’t get the idea out of her head that she could fix whatever was wrong with him, somehow. It was naïve, she knew, Thayer wasn’t someone who would put up with that — being shaped into the perfect person. For some reason, she liked him. There must have been something really wrong with her too, sue her.

Amber leant against the wall of the car, whilst Thayer’s mouth moved against her soft lips, hands tangled in her hair, then moved down to her hips. They were in some parking lot in the middle of nowhere, not exactly the most romantic place, but no one would see them.
Thayer drew back, panting. He leant back in his seat, running a hand through his long hair in exasperation. He didn’t say anything, and the air was suddenly too thick. There was an anger there, but something else too that she couldn’t quite discern.
After a moment, his mouth opened, then closed. “I can’t do this.”
Another beat of silence.
“I have to- I have to go,” He said, beginning to get up, but Amber grabbed him and pulled him back down before he could unlock the door.
“So that’s it? You’re just going to get up and act like nothing happened?”
“Yeah, yeah I am. I’m fed up.”
“You’re fed up?” Amber let out a humourless laugh. “I’ve been putting up with all your shit, and you’re the one suffering? Sure, just make out with me in a car, in the middle of fucking nowhere, then get up and leave. Real cool.”
“You have no clue-”
“No, sure, I don’t, because you don’t tell me shit, Thayer! You’re not some great big mystery, you’re supposed to be my boyfriend, or whatever you want to call this,” Replied Amber, gesturing vaguely.
“Well we’re done, okay?” Hissed Thayer. “So we don’t have to call it jack shit.”

“No, I’m totally done with that jerk.”
Her friends giggled. “Whatever you say, Ambs.”
She gave them a playful shove. “I am! He’s not even showed up to class in forever, anyway. I swear, I’m not gonna think about him again.”
Well, they’d be none the wiser if her mind drifted to him occasionally. Not that often! She didn’t think about kissing him, or fucking him, or even just laughing and acting like an idiot with him. Well, okay, maybe a little.
Her eyes wandered over to him standing in the cafeteria, and his eyes seemed pointedly fixed to the floor. She remembered how he’d look at her sometimes, like she hung the stars, but other times like he wished she didn’t exist.
She was done. Totally done with Thayer Mangeress.
