Chapter Text
‘Sirius Black, this is completely unacceptable!’ Her voice penetrates through the walls of that house. He didn't move. He couldn't. Instead he stood frozen and took whatever was thrown at him. ‘No son of mine will be a bloody queer! Go on, get out!’ and then the pain started, he tried to hold back a scream, he couldn't wake Regulus. It should’ve been easy enough to handle. It was a pain he knew, like the back of his hand. The cruciatus curse.
Sirius woke up with a start. There was someone standing at the foot of his bed. He froze for a second, before he quickly realised who this boy was.
Trying to push his unease away he pretended his dream had been perfectly normal, not a memory of the night everything changed.
“Bloody hell Potter, is the sun even up yet?” Sirius jokes.
James looked worried, but it quickly disappeared. “Ha ha ha. C’mon, mate. Mum’s I’ll, so we’ve gotta make breakfast before Remus and Pete get here.”
He could feel that intense ache in his bones when he stood but quickly pushed it away. He has no right to worry the Potters anymore than he already has. He should be thankful. He can't be an ungrateful brat.
Downstairs was quiet, but not the cold isolating silence he knew. It was different. Almost inviting.
Across the floor Monty’s cooking pancakes on the stove and Effie’s reading the daily prophet. She looks at the pace worried, then up at me, then puts on a fake smile.
“Good morning you too!” She said from her spot at the kitchen table.
“How was your sleep, son?” Monty said, straining at Sirius intently.
Monty couldn't have met him. He was no one's son. No son of mine. No son of mine. No son of mine.
“Sirius?” James questioned.
No son of mine. “Im gay!” Sirius blurted out before clapping a hand over his mouth.
All eyes turned toward him.
James looks scared. He knows how bad Sirius’ parents took the news about him and Remus. Surely the potters aren't the same, right?
Monty looks worried, but not angry. Like all the pieces have finally come together.
Effie looks kind, like always. But her eyes have a different sort of warmth to them now.
No one said anything.
Sirius spoke. “I- uh- I didn't want you to call me your- you know, if you arent okay with that.”
“Sirius love, of course-”
“No. no i'm sorry I can't risk it. If it's not okay, that's fine. You're already better than them. I’ll try to fix it.”
“Sirius,” James took his hands. “They love you, nothing will change that.”
“No- no I-” James gives him a look. “Okay,” He says shakely.
Now Effie speaks. “Thank you for trusting us, dear.”
They all sit there for a moment until Remus opens the front door. He stops when he notices the tension in the air.
“Sorry, I saw the door was open. I can go.”
Filled with a sudan wave of confidence, Sirius stands up. Trying to appear somewhat discreet about it, he locks eyes with his boyfriend and makes his way into the hallway.
Once they were alone, Sirius could barely contain his excitement. “Moony, I did it!”
“You did what?”
“I told Mum and Dad I was gay, and they didn't have a problem with it.”
Remus’ face is covered in shock. “Really? They didn't mind?”
“Not at all,” He smiles. “If it's okay with you, I want to tell them about us?”
Now Remus smiles. “Yeah Padfoot, let's do it.”

Later that evening, Sirius walks into the living room where Effie and Monty Potter are playing a game of wizard chess. He’s picking at his (remus’) jumper nervously with his boyfriend standing at his side.
“Mum, Dad,” Sirius speaks up. “I need to tell you something.”
Monty looks towards the two boys with love in his eyes. “What's going on?”
Sirius and Remus exchange a look before Sirius takes a breath and starts to speak.
“Remus and I are dating.” He pauses. Waiting for the world to come crashing down on him. But it doesn't.
And it never will.

The news came the next day. Sirius Black, formal heir of the Black family, has been disinherited. They didn't even tell him first. Not that he was upset.
He couldn't be upset.
They were leaving for Hogwarts tomorrow.
“Are you alright?” Remus asks him, pulling the boy into a comforting hug.
Sirius nodded, pushing all other emotions away. “Yeah. Now they can't drag me back, right?” He says with a laugh anyone could see through.
“...Okay Pads.”
Suddenly someone knocked on Sirius’s bedroom door. “I hope your pants are on, cause we’re coming in!” James cried.
James and Peter came barreling in through the now open door less than a second later.
“Excuse me? Whatever happened to privacy?” Sirius scoffed.
“Oh boo hoo. You’ll live," was Peter's reply.
“Yeah, alright,” Remus said. “What time are we going to Kings cross?”
James checks his watch. “Ten minutes. Wanna come down, mum's giving us money for the train.”
“Hell yeah, let's go moons!” The boy turned to his boyfriend and soon the four of them were walking out the front door.
***
Sirius and Remus were walking hand in hand on the train stop, without a care in the world. Peter and James had gone off to find Lily, so the two boys were alone.
Or as alone as you can get on a crowded train station.
“That is wonderful, Regulus. You will do great things for this family.” The sound of his mother's voice brought him out of his happy delusion.
He quickly let go of Remus’ hand and stepped away. I wont have a faggot as a son.
Remus leaned close and whispered. “What's wrong, love?”
“She's here.”
That is when Sirius locked eyes with the boy being dragged around by his mother.
Regulus looked like a good heir. He would marry a pureblood woman who’d ignore his affairs.
But something in his eyes looked broken.
Remus grabbed Sirius’s hand to pull him away. He saw Regulus too. “Let's go.”
