Chapter 1: Pie-er

Chapter Text

I don’t think I understand you, a voice said, and I don't think I ever will.

Another crash could be heard as the cage– my apologies, the human before the entity’s unseen eyes trashes around like some sort of prisoner being held as they plead that they’re innocent.

As the kid stood up and walked off towards their window, they halted – their phone rings.

“Kris,” an unfamiliar voice sounds, “Don’t.. forget..”

Interesting, the voice continues, You stopped.

A very familiar grumble of dissatisfaction could be heard as the kid stepped down from their window, albeit harshly, yet drowned by the sound of drunkenly played music down stairs.

With footsteps as light yet heavy on toll. they deliberately walked towards the device, immediately turning the call off.

Despite knowing your eye color already, the voice continues, the entity in the cage glows in such gentle shine that one might not want to look away. Not for Kris, though. They always amaze me.

Kris, in response — even if they’re still looking at their now turned off device, silently signed a “Shut it,” their breathing ragged, they put the phone away. “Can’t you just leave me alone?”

No can do, kid, Even the human was surprised with how sincere that sounded, I’m stuck with you, vice versa.

Gruff breathing, head spinning — It feels like the world is falling apart. They tried to crawl towards the cage on the side of the room, to reach for that thing behind the bars, just to collapse before they even managed to unlock the miniature prison.

Even with their eyes closed and consciousness on the verge of losing, Kris can clearly hear a surprised yelp when their body hits the carpeted floor.

You know  I can listen to your thoughts, right?

“I.. wished you–” a harsh cough left their lips as they tried to prop themself up, just to fail. “ —Can’t..”

Speaking will do you no good, kid.

“Y–You sound like.. mom..”

Surprised you still got that feisty fire in you, truly. What’s with that smile, really?

Finally able to regain some strength, the human finally manages to lay down right in front of the cage, facing the ceiling— looking as if oxygen was something so hard to get, their breathing labored yet slow.

Sleeping on the floor? Not a bad idea.

The kid didn’t answer.

You know, i have to appreciate you helping me answer that quiz Mr. Tenna gave us.

Slow and careful, the said kid turned their head over to the cage, gentle red light enveloping them securely.

I wished I could understand you the first time we met, a noticeable pause, the song down stairs changed to a more jazz-like melody. But I guess that’s the thrill of it.

Both the entity and it’s temporary cage stayed silent, listening to the distant melody.

Wanna try collabing?

This, however, took Kris by surprise.

Not the worst idea ever, right? Just for tonight.

The kid didn’t say anything, not a single word spoken. It wasn’t needed, not when their hands are already reaching to open the cage voluntarily.

“You must’ve been very hungry to collapse like that,” a voice once theirs said, as the vessel stood up, dusting off it’s clothes. Even through the thick clothes that they decided to wear, it can hear– feel their hunger. Very human-like.  “Wow, very hungry. Why did i only realize this now?”

Suddenly, the vessel’s hand started moving intricately — it wasn’t really needed, knowing how they and it are linked via mind, but it respects the effort they make to communicate.

“There’s pie in the fridge down stairs?” the vessel spoke, almost too monotone for it to be an actual vocal chord. The vessel’s hand didn’t stop, as it continued making patterns to convey what they actually wanted. “Woah, like, the whole pie? Your greed sickens me, kid.”

Still, with sluggish footsteps, soft enough for the adults to not see their arrival — also knowing that they probably wouldn’t want to see such a view — the vessel turned sharp to the left, swiftly opening the said electronic.

“Pie, pie.. Oh, you’re actually right!” The monotone voice brightens up– if that sounds possible. “Cold, too. Wow, now that’s some supper.” Taking the sweet food with it’s container, it tried to close the fridge–

That is, before the vessel’s other hand started signing again. Surprised, the vessel held the pie tight, disbelief in their dull voice rang out in a whisper-like manner, “What? the chocolate from the freezer– Come on, Kris, i thought you wanted to keep that for another day so i didn’t take it this morning!”

Groaning, the vessel walked back up towards their bedroom with a stash of chocolate and a full pie on tow.

You’re enjoying yourself, the red entity said, floating around the hungry kid, now munching on their chocolate. At this rate, i should definitely make you fight more in the darkworld. You know, draining all that glucose out. Not good for your health, you know?

Kris answered with a grumble, a notable frown on their face. As their hands convey the messages, the words fell down to one definition, “You’re the one who starved me, stupid.”

Don’t say I didn’t warn you, kid, people will call them crazy if they said they can hear a red, heart-shaped flying object entity thing sigh, But go and eat your supper, and then sleep.

As the kid now focuses on the food before them, the entity watches– adores, maybe even concerns.

I think i didn’t understand you, It repeats, the words sounding too fond– proud, to be called an insult. And maybe i can.

Kris signed back. The entity feels at ease.
