Hold me close

Summary:

Quirin dies while Ulla is gone on her journey. But Ulla makes it back from the journey alive and has to adjust to being a single parent.

Or, me just getting sudden inspiration while listening to Orbit the reprise by Danielle Keiko Eyer ( hope I spelled right) and thinking, ' hmmm, what if Ulla made it out alive and Quirin dies instead?'

Sorry, I'm bad at summaries 😅

Notes:

Hi! Welcome to this silly little project of mine. I'm pretty sure this has already been done, but hey, I'm sure it's fine. Plus I didn't sit outside for over two hours for this to not work out. So.... Yeah.

Happy reading!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter 1: Promises I'll try to keep

Chapter Text

Ulla skipped down the street as she happily hummed a song. Today was the day that she got to see her small little family again. She looking forward to seeing her husband and son again. She was especially looking forward to forgetting what happened on her journey.

She barely made it out alive and her relationship with her oldest friend was definitely ruined, but for now we'll put that aside.

All that matters is that she made it home alive and will get to see her family again. Ulla became more and more excited the closer she got to her home.

Her smile grew wider as she saw her house in the distance. She practically ran up the stairs and threw the door open.

"I'M BACK!" She excitedly yelled. She looked around and saw the dark living room with baby toys scattered across the floor, a blanket laid out on the floor, and a baby bottle on their small table.

' Looks exactly how I left. So, where are they?'. She looked around and saw light coming from the kitchen and walked towards it.

"Hello? Quirin?" She walks into the kitchen and yelps as she sees Adira standing in the kitchen with Varian in her arms drinking a cup of apple juice.

"Adira, you scared me. What are you doing here? And where is Quirin?" She gently grabbed Varian and looked up at Adira.

"Quirin isn't here anymore. H-He's been gone since this morning." Ulla looked confused and noticed something.

' She's crying' She realized.

" What do you mean? Where is he?" Ulla asked.

" Quirin is dead. He died this morning. He came down with a terrible illness and asked me to take care of Varian if he didn't survive. I'm so sorry, Ulla."

"What? You're joking, right? W-Why didn't he tell me?"

Ulla's eyes filled with tears as Adira explained what happened. Soon she's sobbing with Varian playing with her hair.

"WHY DIDN'T HE TELL ME?!"
Adira guides Ulla over to a chair as she sobs even louder. Varian squirms in her grasp and tries to look up at her.

"M- Mama?" Ulla and Adira gasp and look over at Varian.

"Did he just say his first word?"

" Can you say that again?" Ulla asks.

"M-Mama?" Varian repeats. Ulla squeals and hugs Varian close. Varian giggles and hugs her back. She sniffles and looks him in the eyes.

" Baby, I promise I'll always be here for you. I love you so much, more than you will ever know." She kisses his forehead and holds him close.

Adira walks over and places a hand on Ulla's back. She's slightly smiling now. She pulls a chair next to Ulla and the two talk about what to do next.

Hours later Ulla brings him upstairs and puts him to bed. She sings a soft lullaby and rocks back and forth in a rocking chair next to the crib.

Once he falls asleep, she blows out the candle in his room and walks over to her room. Adira slept in the living room and Ulla slept alone.

The room looked so dark and empty without him. She pushed that thought aside and got changed, climbing into bed after.

She cried herself to sleep that night. But, she also made a promise.... ' I will love and always be there for my son. No matter what....'
