Of Families and Fangs

Summary:

Owen Grady does not make it off of Isla Nublar, trapped and alone, he makes sacrifices to survive, relying only on Blue, the velociraptor who saved him.

At the same time, six teenagers are also on this apocalyptic island, left behind and forgotten, they can only rely on each other to survive.

What happens when Owen Grady realizes he isn’t as alone as he thought? What happens when six teenagers who have felt the failures of adults over and over again are suddenly faced with trusting the only other person that was abandoned as they were?

(What happens when Ingen’s plans are two steps ahead of everyone else’s, when Dr. Henry Wu plays god one too many times?)

Chapter 1: Beginnings and Ends

Chapter Text

“Easy Blue.”

Owen’s heart is pounding, his fingers shaking.

Blue’s yellow eyes are boring into him, full of emotion, of the intelligence and strength that led him to love her in the first place.

She allows him to slowly raise his hand to the side of her head. Watching and waiting to see how he reacts to her boldness.

Click

The snap of the empty camera harness is loud, and yet neither of them flinch as the nylon band flops to the ground,

Owen can’t help but let out a breathy smile, his heart is racing, his hands shaking, but it’s not from fear.

“That’s it girl” he murmurs, pulling away his hand to show he was done pushing her boundaries.

She made a low grumble, but seemed satisfied.

Then there was a roar behind her, and Owen tensed as she turned to face the monstrous form of the Indominus Rex.

It chittered at Blue, the noise making Owen’s hair raise on end as he remembered the way the two species had communicated before.

Before Owen could even think of telling Claire to run, or even to pick up his gun off the ground, blue turned back to him, chittering in a familiar pattern.

Two short, one slightly longer.

Hunt

Owen couldn’t help the grin as he decidedly turned his eyes up towards the Indominus Rex, and Blue took the wordless command to heart, turning around to screech at the much larger hybrid.

The Indominus didn’t take the challenge kindly, roaring in rage and swiping Blue into a nearby building with a massive paw. Owen’s heart fell as he saw her drop to the ground, lifeless.

His heart shuddered in his chest as he held up his hands, ready to run once again.

On either side of him Delta and Echo screeched in anger, and his eyes tightened.

He whistled, a command he had trained since they were babies. To mark every hunt, every scent trail that they had to follow, every time they were given live prey.

Hunt

The two raptors jumped and as they attacked the Indominus he urged Claire and the boys forward, bending down to grab his rifle.

As the three ran he circled the fighting predators, laying fire on the spots he didn’t risk shooting his girls, the legs and back hip.

He got to the side of one of the many decorative statues, and took the moment to hide and reload, his hands now steady and full of purpose as he put the bullets into the chamber.

He saw Echo get thrown off as he raised his gun, and shot three more times before dropping to reload again, out of the corner of his eye he could see Claire running, but could only hope she was finding a good place to take cover as he aimed his rifle.

He fired twice into the monster’s shoulder, and then watched, horrified as it grabbed Delta off it’s back and tossed her into a building. Flame burst to life and he barely had a moment to take a breath, much less think about her fate, as the Indominus’ tail snapped his way.

He lunged out of the way, the decorative piece he was hiding behind shattering from the force of the hit, into shards of plastic that bit into his back as he tried to escape.

He ran, and had just enough time to glance over and see Echo getting grabbed by a massive maw of teeth before jumping into the merchandise booth that he had seen Claire coming from.

Gray and Zach were there, huddled together amongst hastily discarded shirts, toys and other dinosaur paraphernalia.

He gestured at them to be quiet, but it was too late, as the next thing he knew was the tiny kiosk shaking as he held the boys, massive teeth chomping to reach inside for them.

A wall broke, and he pushed them further into the building even as a massive claw reached for them, scraping the concrete floors and leaving huge gashes behind.

Once,

Twice,

Three times did she try before she managed to snag Gray’s belt pack.

Owen grabbed hold of the boy even as the animal tried to pull its prize out, he knew he wasn’t strong enough, knew it wouldn’t be enough, but what else could he do?

Zach leans forward, and Owen wants to cry when he unlatches the belt, and Gray is left behind as the Indominus pulls back without resistance.

There is a shattering crack that sounds like thunder, and two roaring cries that make his entire body vibrate, as if his bones themselves are shaking.

Owen looks out to see the T-Rex roaring at the much larger Indominus, and when he sees Claire, on the ground, so tiny compared to the two giant predators, he wants to kiss and then throttle her.

The two roar again, and then take thunderous steps toward each other, meeting in a flash of teeth and blood and fury.

The earth trembles, the buildings break, and Owen’s chest vibrates with the intensity of their clashing roars and growls.

He watches as they almost crush Claire, and the small spark of hope inside him is snuffed out when he sees that the Indominus isn’t just bigger than the old Dinosaur, but that her longer arms give her an advantage that quickly makes the fight unfair.

He watches as the Indominus pins her to the ground before her teeth wrap around her throat, and he hears Claire’s scream at the same time he sees the massive pair barreling into the shop.

He pushes the two kids out of the way, even as he tries to escape the collapse himself, and the boys run, heading straight to their aunt as the two massive animals duke it out.

Owen can do nothing as the wall collapses on top of him, pinning both legs to the ground, something, probably rebar or pipe, goes straight through his right ankle, making him scream in pain.

What’s worse is he can feel Rexy on top of the debris, could feel her trying to stand, as each shift, each movement, flares pain through his body. A massive amount of pressure laid on top of his legs, five tons of Dinosaur pressing down on him.

He could do nothing as the heavy steps of the Indominus came closer, and couldn’t look behind him as they stopped.

He could hear the T-Rex’s labored breathing, mixed with the huffs of air that spread moisture across the back of his body.

He could feel the pain rushing to his head, his body becoming numb as the pain overloaded his senses.

There is a furious screech, and his eyes snap open at the familiar sound, dots dancing in his vision as he tries to spot the familiar figure.

“Blue.”

It is more of a prayer than a name, the hope that swells in his chest a sign of the faith he has in her.

Her jaws are open, her claws poised for attack, and Owen can practically feel her anger as she takes a running leap over him and towards the pair behind him.

“Owen!”

He wakes to Claire screaming his name, and he can barely open his eyes to look at her, half his face smooshed into the ground.

“Owen!”

He groans, trying to say something past the cotton in his bones.

A hand grabs his own, and he squeezes it tightly as Gray comes into view.

“He’s alive! Claire he’s alive!”

“Quick! Zach help me!”

The next thing he knows is agony, and he doesn’t realize he’s screaming until he stops, his throat ragged as a hand covers his mouth.

“Owen, Owen you can’t scream, the Indominus is dead thank god, but the T-Rex is still nearby.”

Okay, yeah that makes sense, not supposed to let the massive predator know there is easy prey around. Though the knowledge that the monster that was the Indominus was dead helped give him some relief.

“I know it hurts, but you have to let us get this stuff off of you okay?”

He nods, and the hands removed, but before he can speak there is a loud voice over the speakers.

“Attention! All Park Goers must report to the South Ferry Dock for Immediate Evacuation, the last ferry leaves in thirty minutes!”

Owen’s heart falls, and he can see it across Claire’s face as she realizes exactly what he does.

It is a thirty-five minute drive from Main Street to the South Dock, that’s without any roadblocks or debris.

The way the Park is now, it will be hell to get there in time.

“Go.”

“Owen?” Gray clenches his hand, and he tries to give the kid a smile.

Claire’s eyes prickle with tears, and he gives her a nod. “Get the boys home safe, get yourself home safe.”

“No! We-we can get this stuff off of you, it-it’s-“

“Zach, don’t worry about me, you need to protect your little brother and aunt for me right? You need to get them to the boat on time.”

Owen’s heart breaks as he hears the teen sob, but Claire looks at him in the eye as her tears fall.

“We’ll send someone okay? Just, just-“

“Go Claire, hurry before it’s too late.” Owen interrupts her, unable to stand any type of hopeful promise, he knows the protocol just as well as she does.

In the event of a full containment breach, an evacuation is ordered, and once those ferries leave, there will be no return, no search party, no rescue, if you get left on the island, you stay there.

Claire nods, tears falling as she picks up Gray and turns to Zach.

“Let’s go.”

“But!”

“We’ll send someone back Zach, but we have to leave now!” Claire scolds, grabbing his hand. The teen looks over at Owen, and he gives a, hopefully, encouraging smile. “Go kid, get your brother to safety.”

Owen lets his eyes close as he sees them run, tears coming from his own eyes as he lets out a sob.

He hopes too whatever higher being there is that those three will make it, hopes that it’s worth it, that they live.

Because he knows he’s not going to, trapped, injured, can’t even move off his stomach. On an island with hundreds of predators that would love to make a meal out of him, hell, he can be killed by just a few compies like this.

He kind of wishes he had asked Claire to get him his gun, but that was kind of a bad joke wasn’t it? To ask her to waste a few precious moments just for his own selfishness?

A slow and painful, or a quick and vicious death, that’s his options now.

He kind of hopes it’ll be Rexy, then at least it will be decently quick, and a badass way to die, not many get to say they were gobbled up by a T-Rex right? At least not within the last few years.

Besides, blood loss and shock sound like such a lame death in comparison.

He wonders how many others are left on the island, suffering and dying, he can imagine the death toll on the news tomorrow, talking about the tragedy of Jurassic World, how many people would line up outside the Corporate office demanding justice.

Masrani might be happy he died, can’t get charged with willful negligence and endangerment in hell or heaven.

The money-hungry corporate assholes are going to be bleeding money faster than he is blood, he can just imagine all the payouts, Medical fees, fines, and other shit they are going to have to pay for.

It’s not like it matters to him though, he’s just another body on the Death toll, just another metric.

He doesn’t realize he has fallen asleep again until he’s opening his eyes. The extreme exhaustion and adrenaline drop had made him exhausted enough to conk out for staying still even a few minutes.

It takes him a second to try and understand what woke him up, before he hears a familiar noise, and he realizes, perhaps he doesn’t have to die alone.

Two short whistles, and he gets a quick response, and the next thing he knows there is the sound of running feet, and then he comes face-to-toe with the familiar curved talons of a raptor.

Blue croons, one large orange eye peering at him as she lowers her head.

“Hey girl.”

He whispers, a smile on his face as she chitters at him.

“I seem to be stuck don’t I?” He asks her, and she chitters again, before leaning down.

He closes his eyes, and feels her breath tickle across his hair as she smells him.

His skin is covered in goosebumps, she’s so close to him, and he’s literally unable to do anything but scream, his back is wide open.

All he is now is a meal, a very easy, very delicious meal.

She croons as she sniffs down his body, reaching his thighs and hips where the debris has pinned him. Thankfully, without the weight of a T-rex on top, he wasn't currently being crushed, just pinned and unable to remove the debris.

He flinches slightly when her nose pushes against his leg, but he can’t move beyond that. Even as she pushes slightly harder.

“Sorry baby girl, can’t move.” He tells her, slowly turning his head to look at her.

They make eye contact, and she vocalizes at him, curiosity and worry clear across her body as her tail wags in agitation.

He doesn’t know why exactly he does it, perhaps after years of teaching her, the habit was just ingrained.

He shows her clearly, demonstrating by slowly grabbing his left pant leg and trying to pull, it of course, does nothing, and she seems to realize what’s going on as she pushes her head against the debris.

With his neck craned like this, he can see exactly what pinned him. The cheap wood covered in plaster that made up the tiny kiosk’s walls was laying directly on top of his legs, and on top of that was the metal roof, and most importantly, the large metal support from a nearby building that held everything down.

Owen’s circulation wasn’t cut off, the weight was spread pretty evenly, so he didn’t have the pins and needle sensation that meant ruined blood flow or crush injury.

Blue pushed her head against the debris again, and Owen’s eyes went wide as he felt the tiniest shift from it.

She did it again, this time pushing her shoulder against it as well, and Owen felt even more movement.

“That’s it Blue!” He tells her, and she looks over at him, one large eye making contact with his own. She croons, softly, and he grins, pointing at the debris with one hand.

He whistles, sharply.

Hunt

It’s the best he can do, but she seems to understand, growling fiercely as she pushes against the mess again.

Owen pulls his arms under him, and with every ounce of strength he has he pulls his body in time with the shifting of the wall, and he feels nothing but the need to live burning inside his chest as he pushes forward.

Inch by inch he pulls forward, and his grin is manic as he manages to get his knees out, every movement sends pain through his body, but he can't stop, his life depends on it, literally.  Blue is his literal life-saver, pushing the debris just enough for him to shimmy out.

Then he screams as his right leg is jarred, the object that went through his ankle hitting against the other debris in a clang of metal. He bites down through a scream as the pile shifts, destabilized by the sudden change, Blue jumps back as the debris collapses in on itself. Owen bends his left leg, intent on pushing against the debris to rip his other leg out, object be damned.

He doesn’t make it.

He stops screaming and cursing after a little bit. Managing to sit up and shift his body enough to see the damage.

His right leg, about two inches above his ankle, has been crushed, the wall, roof, and metal rebar now fully resting against his leg.

There is no way that he can pull it out, and even if he does, he knows that all the bones are probably broken, if not shattered.

Blue crooned again, coming beside him and sniffing his leg. Her lips pulled back and she hissed, no doubt smelling his blood.

Owen said a few more curses as he took in the situation, and then paused, a sudden realization sparking something inside his chest.

He did a check of what he had on him, his knife, belt, clothes, a few bullets.

He knew of several first aid kits hidden around the area, but most importantly, he had gone through a dozen and a half training sessions on how to treat injuries.

Injuries just like a large predator removing a limb.
