Work Text:
There were a few things talked about in the lanes after Vander died. Not openly, at least, not in front of Silco and especially not in front of Jinx.
Nobody ever talked too much about Vander. You could bring him up, vaguely reference the past, but you never praised him too much where anybody could hear you. And God forbid if anybody made it clear they thought he was better at running the lanes than Silco. Anybody who did would curiously disappear soon after. Not that anybody was dumb enough to go looking for them. Everyone knew where they went, what happened to them, and why it happened. It was a clear message: don't talk about Vander.
Similarly, nobody ever mentioned his kids, the ones who all vanished on the same night he did. That wasn't even something you could reference. It wouldn't get you killed, but it would make your life a lot harder if you said anything about them in front of a certain girl. And she had a tendency to hide and listen in on people, so you could never be too cautious. There were two of Vander's children you couldn't even think too hard about, never mind say their names. Vi, of course, the eldest, the one everyone was so surprised when they heard of her passing, because she was just so strong that nobody ever thought it would happen. And Powder, who happened to look uncannily similar to Silco's daughter.
That was the most important thing. Nobody was ever to acknowledge that Jinx was Powder. Everybody knew it, of course, they did; she hardly looked any different the first time she was seen again after the incident. It had been months, and she looked a lot more tired and sad than she had before, but it was still the same girl. That was unmistakable. But she said her name was Jinx, and Silco called her Jinx, so everybody did, acting like she had just materialized out of thin air at the age of eleven and had no past to speak of. The only person to call her Powder was the last remnant of her past, the only person who seemed brave, or stupid, enough to challenge Silco. Ekko.
When he first found out she was alive, he spent months trying to figure out how to get to her. She never went out, never talked to anybody. Even if she did go out she was always with Silco, never left his side, freaked out if she even thought he would leave. But Ekko finally found a chance, just the right timing to be alone with her. It did take some mild breaking and entering but he figured it would be worth it...
When Jinx saw him she looked as though she'd seen a ghost, eyes wide, trembling. He took a step forward and she took a step back, stumbling over herself, reaching for something.
"Powder-" He started but then that look in her eyes changed, like a cornered animal about to bite. She grabbed what she was reaching for which turned out to be a gun. Ekko was shocked, where had she gotten a gun? Why was she pointing it at him? He tried again to reassure her but she yelled at him, said Powder had died, and with how she was reacting he wondered if he could have been mistaken, if this girl wasn't the one he used to know. She started yelling louder, getting closer, still pointing the weapon at him, finger on the trigger and tears rolling down her cheeks as if he was the one pointing a gun at her.
By the time he managed to get out of the room she had shot at him, barely missing, and he was certain that Powder had died that day. maybe not in the way everyone else had but she did die and Jinx wasn't a hostage or helpless victim. Because she would have shot him, point blank if he hadn't of moved, and if that was the approach she had then was not the girl he once knew. So just like everyone else he never said Powder's name again, just regarded her as another person lost in Silco's takeover.
