Chapter 1
What Happened?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
He stood, confused. He didn't quite remember what had happened. I'm supposed to be dead. He looked around. He was a in a snowy forest, it reminded him of the forest in Snowdin. Where the hell am I? He looked around, waiting to see someone or something he recognized. Suddenly he heard a twig snap behind him. He quickly turned around. Chara. "You're not from this AU, are you?" They asked.
"Au? The hell's an AU?" He asked, more confused than before.
Chara laughed before vanishing. What's an AU? He walked around the snowy forest until it got dark. He needed somewhere to stay, at least for tonight, if only he could find his way out of this damned forest.
"Hello?" Asked a voice. He turned around and saw a strange skeleton. The skeleton kind of looked like him, but he was still different in a way that he couldn't figure out. "Hello." He Responded.
"Who are you?" The skeleton asked.
I'm Sans, he immediately thought, but that can't be right? That doesn't feel right. I am Sans, but I'm not. Who am I. "I'm Red." He said, after long contemplation.
"I'm Sans." The skeleton said, reaching out to shake Red's hand. When they shook hands, there was a loud 'pffftt' sound.
"The ol' woopie cushion in the hand prank!" Sans laughed. "Never gets old!" Sans smiled, Red couldn't help but smile back.
I remember I did that before, and even during. During what?
"Do you know a place I can stay the night? I'm kinda lost." Red asked shyly.
"Oh sure. You can stay at my place. I'm sure my bro won't mind." Sans shrugged. Sans lead Red through the snowy forest until they came across a small town. There was a large sign that said "Snowdin".
Snowdin. That's where I live. Sans lead him to a comfy looking house. That's my house.
"This is my home. You can sleep on the couch." Sans said, opening the front door. Red could smell food cooking when he entered.
I remember this smell. Red sat down on the couch and made himself comfortable.
"My bro is making dinner if you're hungry." Sans said.
"Who are you talking to?" Asked Sans's brother, peeking his head out from the kitchen.
"Oh, this is Red. He got lost so I'm letting him stay the night." Sans explained.
"Ooh like a sleepover! How fun!" Sans's brother said excitedly. "I'm Papyrus by the way." Papyrus introduced.
I know that. I know that because you're my brother. What's going on?
Red stared off into space and tried to rationalize what was happening.
"So where do you come from?" Sans asked, plopping down on the couch.
"Oh I'm not quite sure. I don't really remember." Red said. It's not the whole truth, but it's not a lie either.
"You don't remember?" Sans questioned.
"Not a thing." Red shrugged. What happened? Why can't I remember?
"That's strange. So you have amnesia or somthin'?" Sans asked.
"Um, I guess that's what you'd call it. Yeah." Red answered.
"Weird. I wonder what happened to ya." Sans wondered aloud.
Me too.
Soon Papyrus came out with three plates of spaghetti, one for him, one for Sans, and one for Red. As soon as Red saw the food his stomach growled, when was the last time I ate? As soon as Papyrus set down the plate of spaghetti Red picked up the fork and started shoving the food in his mouth.
"Damn. You must be hungry." Sans laughed.
I must be. The food doesn't even taste very good, but I can't stop. I was starving and didn't even notice. Hell, I might need seconds.
Red finished his plate before Sans or Papyrus could even take their first bites.
"Geez Red. When was the last time you ate?" Sans asked, concerned.
"Honestly I'm not sure. It's at least been a week or two." Red said, putting his fork down.
"There's more if you're still hungry." Papyrus offered. Red thought about turning him down, he didn't want to be impolite and eat all their food, but he was still starving.
"Yes please." Red said with a nod. Papyrus got up and took Red's plate to the kitchen.
"You can stay here as long as you need." Sans said. "Really? Thank you!" Red smiled.
Papyrus came back with Red's now full plate. "Eat slower this time. You don't wanna get a stomach ache." Papyrus said, setting down Red's plate. Red nodded his thanks and started eating again.
When everyone finished their food, Red was ready to sleep.
"It's getting late. We should go to bed." Papyrus said, getting up.
"Mhm." Sans agreed.
After they both headed upstairs, Red made himself comfortable on the couch and stared up at the ceiling, waiting for sleep to take him.
Everything was blurry, he could hardly breathe, he could hardly see, he could hardly think. He was running. What was he chasing? Or what was chasing him. He felt fear, but he wasn't sure if it was his own. He felt himself speak, but he couldn't hear what he said. He felt like he was underwater, not in control of his body, just watching as everything happened. Soon the fog cleared and he stopped running. He saw his brother, he looked scarred. The fear was much more intense now. Tears fell from his brother's eyes as he slowly backed away from Red. Why is he scared of me? Did I do something bad? Suddenly pain. He fell to the ground, he saw blood pooling around him. What the hell just happened!? He felt Papyrus hug him, he was crying hard. Red couldn't understand what he was saying, but he sounded upset. "It's okay bro." Red heard himself say.
Red's eyes sprang open and he quickly sat up. His dream was quickly fading and he tried to remember every single detail. Red took a moment to breathe and calm down. He looked around the dark living room, he swore he saw shadows move every time he blinked. Red swung his feet off the couch and sighed. He could still feel the fear from his dream.
Papyrus, what did I do to make you fear me?
Light slowly flickered into the room, it was morning. Red usually doesn't wake up this early. Usually Papyrus has to drag him out of bed.
"You're such a lazybones!"
Papyrus would always say. Red wished he could be woken up by his brother at least one more time.
"Oh you're up early." Papyrus said, walking down the stairs. "Yeah." Red nodded and yawned. "Where are you heading off to?" Red asked as Papyrus headed to the door.
"I'm going to train with my friend Undyne! I'm going to be captain of the royal guard someday!" Papyrus said cheerfully.
Red nodded and smiled. "I'm sure you will."
Soon after Papyrus left, Red decided to head out for a bit of a morning walk. Red enjoyed the cool breeze of the Snowdin air and he walked. He never really got to go on walks when he was younger, never had the time. Red stopped when he heard footsteps behind him.
"You don't belong here."
