Work Text:
Abaddon was growing frustrated, this vessel’s older sister, Rebekah has refused to leave his side for weeks now. He has found it quite difficult to wreak havoc with her constantly by his side. Perhaps it was because of her and the vessel, Zachariah’s mother’s resent passing. He doesn’t see the father very often, commonly off doing whatever important job he had, leaving Rebekah, a twelve year old girl, to take care of Zachariah.
She doesn’t let him wonder around the town often, and if he is outside it’s under her watch and it’s either in the woods or the area outside their home. If he is able to go into town he has to stay by Rebekah’s side and he has to stay quiet. It’s frustrating and he hates it. But everyone never seemed to question it so he just listened, he wanted to at least blend in a bit if he didn’t want to get caught so quickly.
Rebekah had just gone inside to grab their small collection of spinning tops, Abaddon was waiting for her in the yard, picking as some grass. Then a rock hit his face. “OW!” Abaddon yelped, he was still getting used to how sensitive this body is. Abaddon pressed small fingers against where the rock hit him, he was bleeding. “I knew it! You can speak!” It was a girl, she looked a few years older than Rebekah. Abaddon glared at the girl and growled. She gasped and stumbled back in fear. It was then when Rebekah came back outside, she had immediately noticed Abaddon’s bleeding head and rushed over to him.
“Are you mad?! What is wrong with you?” Rebekah hissed, shielding Abaddon from the girl. “That boy is possessed! Not only has he spoken but his eyes turned red! That is not Zachariah, he is no longer your brother.” The girl screeched. The commotion brought attention to people around the town, they were circling around them, trying to figure out what happened. Abaddon was sure he was done for.
“WITCH! She’s a witch! She tried casting a spell on my brother and frame him as a demon!” Rebekah suddenly screamed, pointing a finger towards the girl. To make it believable, Abaddon let Zachariah for the most part regain control. Zachariah began to tear up and curl up against Rebekah in fear.
The girl began to stutter, trying to win over the crowd but she had no proof to back her up. The scene did not play in her favor. “It is possessed by a demon! I swear to you, HE SPOKE! ZACHARIAH CANNOT SPEAK!” The girl cried, begging them to believe her. Her fear turned into anger. “Both of them are creations of SIN! They are a curse on this town!” The girl screamed, she was crying now.
“Zachariah just lost his mother, he is only grieving.” An older woman said. “He’s so well behaved, there’s no way he’s possessed!” An older man said. “If they’re truly a curse why hasn’t their father been treated as such? He is the reason of their birth after all.” A woman hissed. “Zachariah speaking? Yeah right!” A teen laughed.
Abaddon watched through Zachariah’s eyes as the girl was dragged away. Zachariah blinked and Abaddon was back in control. Rebekah sighed and knelt down to Abaddon’s height. “Are you okay?” Rebekah asked, eyes glancing at his still bleeding forehead every now and again. Abaddon just deepened his frown. “Let’s get you patched up okay?” Rebekah said, standing up. Abaddon silently nodded and followed the older girl inside.
“I hope you understand now why I have told you to not speak around others. They take your miracle as a sign of the devil. I am only doing this to protect you Zachariah, you cannot let anyone know. Not even father.” Rebekah said as she washed the blood off of Abaddon’s face. Abaddon huffed. “That’s so boring.” Abaddon whined. Rebekah only laughed. “Well I’d rather you stay alive than be killed so you’re just gonna have to get over it.” Rebekah said as she covered Abaddon’s wound with bandages.
Then the front door opened and everything Abaddon was about to say died in his throat. “Father. You are home early.” Rebekah said, immediately standing up straight. “You accused Mary of witchcraft.” The father said, he didn’t look very happy. “I am sorry Father, she was trying to hurt Zachariah and I just wasn’t thinking clear enough. I should not have said that, I am sorry.” Rebekah said, lowering her head in shame. Abaddon kept his eyes on his lap, not sure on what to do. “Her trial is tomorrow and you will be telling the truth. I did not rase you like that Rebekah.” The father said before sighing. Suddenly he was kneeling in front of Abaddon. “Did Mary try to cast a spell on you?” He asked. Abaddon just shrugged, refusing to look up. “Did she hurt you?” He asked. Abaddon nodded. The father hummed.
Abaddon steals a glance over the father’s shoulder at Rebekah and she looked terrified.
This was the first time Abaddon has been in the courtroom, it looked quite similar to a church. They sat in the front row due to Rebekah being a witness for the trail, her hand shook as she held his hand tightly.
He didn’t pay too much attention to what was happening until Rebekah released his hand. Her father led her to the front to testify, it was then Abaddon noticed the father was a priest. Abaddon’s hands tightened into fists in his lap.
“I only ever saw the aftermath of their altercation. Zachariah and I had been playing outside but I had quacking gone inside to grab our spinning tops. I was only gone for a moment but when I got back Zachariah’s head was bleeding and Mary was practically standing over him with such hatred in her eyes I just. I was so scared, all I knew was that she had thrown a rock at my brother. She started going on about how he had spoken and because of that he was possessed.” Rebekah said. “Did you hear anything while you were inside?” The judge asked. “I heard him yelp and then Mary yelling, I wasn’t sure of the situation though since I couldn’t comprehend what she was saying. I was already on my way outside when I heard it so it didn’t take too long to rush outside.” Rebekah answered.
“And then you accused her of being a witch, in front of the entire town.” The judge said. “All I knew was that she hurt Zachariah and was insisting that he was possessed by a demon. She never liked me or my brother, spreading rumors about us once and awhile so I just… I don’t. All I saw was the fear in my brother’s eyes and the wickedness in Mary’s and in my heart I felt as though she were a witch.” Rebekah said. The judge nodded. “You may sit down now Miss Rebekah. I would like to hear from Mary now.” The judge said. Rebekah nodded and sat back down next to Abaddon as Mary walked up. Abaddon caught Mary’s smirk before it was quickly changed to something pathetic. She was putting up an act.
“I do admit to throwing a rock at Zachariah, but it was only an act of self defense!” Mary cried, whipping away tears Abandon could not see. “I had only walked over to say hello but then he growled and launched himself at me! I was only protecting myself! His eye had even turned red!” She continued. Gasps rang out throughout the courtroom.
Then some boy in the crowd stood up. “LAIR! I overheard you talking to Hannah about your plan to frame them! You’ve always hated Zachariah and Rebekah, always trying to stir up trouble with them.” The boy yelled. Mary started screaming. The whole courtroom erupted in chaos. Rebekah pulled Abaddon close.
In the end Mary was found guilty of witchcraft. And so was Hannah.
Rebekah and Abaddon stayed in the back of the crowd as the two girls were hung for witchcraft. Rebekah looked like she wanted to cry but she didn’t seem regretful for this outcome. Rebekah held him close as the wind blew. Fall was approaching.
