“Emma!”
Emma grinned, holding out her arms to allow her cousin Grace to run into her arms, glad that traveling with her family meant getting to see her cousin, who’d moved to the States after her mother died. It seemed like a perfect way to reconnect, even though—
A frost came out of her mouth, reminding her that if she got wet in any shape or form, she’d turn into a mermaid, and that, being a fish out of water so to speak, the cold weather would prove a challenge. “So? This is your new home? And I hear that you’ve got a new mom as well?”
“Elizabeth and Grandma April are amazing,” Grace said. “I’m constantly learning to make new things at the bakery, and we’ve adopted some of their Christmas traditions thanks to the time capsule. Elizabeth can’t replace mum, but she’s the next best thing.”
“That’s good to hear,” Emma said, heading forward and—
A chunk of snow almost fell down the back of her clothing, making her wet. Grace noticed her reaction. “Emma? Something the matter?”
Emma smiled at her younger cousin, not wishing to worry about her mermaid transformation, which her relatives didn’t really know about. “Nothing. Don’t worry about it. I’m looking forward to actually having a white Christmas, given it’s always summer down there.”
“Yeah, I know!” Grace said cheerfully.
