Sophronia Grimshaw moved to Forks because They, the Sluagh, told her to. They had asked, demanded, begged, and bargained with her for hours as she sat on the floor of her small apartment reading the news on her laptop.
'Man vanishes Friday night.'
'Several campers attacked over spring break.'
'Mutilated body found in woods.'
With every new headline that lit up her screen, the sluagh grew louder, more insistent. Refusing to let her have a moment of silence until she caved, and then, twenty-one days later, she bought a one-way plane ticket and signed a lease.
For the entirety of her first month in Forks, the Sluagh gifted her with silence. And then once she grew too comfortable, she was reminded of their existence with whispers.
'Stay out of the woods.'
'It ain't animals, it's man.'
'Demons, monsters.'
'Dead men walking'
'Feeding on the living'
And then of course there were new ones, the new ghosts, the ones that weren't sure of what had happened to them, the ones that just muttered. High-pitched and whiny. Eternally confused.
'Why'

'Why'
The worst ones, though, were the ones that were as conscious and aware as a dead man that didn't know he was dead could be. The ones that just screamed and screamed until Sophronia broke and spoke and gave them attention to finally silence them.
And when Sopronia received her first animal attack victim at her office, the Sluagh grew excited.

... bite mark along the side of the neck, circular in shape. 38 mm in diameter ...
...Bruising around the puncture wounds [Caused by the pressure from the teeth]...
... Possible human bite mark...

And from then on, the bodies kept coming in.
