Breach of Contract 🖋

Summary:

Pomni is a junior legal assistant at Caine & Abel, technically competent yet emotionally hanging by a thread. By the time she leaves work after an especially hellish day—missed sleep, angry emails and even angrier people she’s barely holding it together. So when her car breaks down on the side of the road, it feels less like bad luck and more like the universe personally telling her to go fuck herself.

That’s when Jax shows up. A mechanic with grease on his hands and a mouth full of attitude, acting like helping her is the biggest inconvenience of his night. Pomni braces herself for judgment or some half-assed comment, but instead he just gets to work on her engine. He fixes the problem, explains it in rough, simple terms, and doesn’t make a big deal out of it. By the time her car is running again, Pomni is still tired, still anxious, still very much a mess. but she feels a little less alone and a lot warmer inside.

Chapter Text

tap, taptap, tap

Pomni tapped her fingers against her desk, fighting her irritation as she stared at what was supposed to be a work file on her computer. the sounds of all the typing and someone's water bottle popping back into shape at random intervals was making her more irritated by the minute, the file that was supposed to be sent to her was nothing but corrupted data, she groaned to herself before opening a new file and begrudgingly getting to work making a whole new one from scratch.

It felt like centuries watching the clock tick by at a agonizingly slow pace before it eventually hit 6pm and she could finally go home to her apartment, sit on her couch and think about how nice it would be to go on an actual vacation. She got up from behind her desk, her chair scrapping the floor behind her as she moved to pick up her bag and stretched her legs, it felt like the light's were extra bright even though they were always on a warm tone for the sake of 'office morality' or some bullshit like that. Moving through the hallway, and headed out of her office area everyone was equally as tired and disoriented, bumping shoulders with multiple people trying to exit at the same time was annoying as hell but wasn't as bad as it would've been to spend another second in that suffocating office. The only thing she wanted was to leave peacfully for once and not get told to do something last minute on her way out.

She made her way to the stairwell, since the elevator's had been broken most of the week at this point. This shit felt like a personal grudge with the matinence man even though she never once saw him. She made her way to the lobby and heard a "Oh see you tomorrow pomni!" Their secretary waved at her, still smiling despite all the angry people who came through today. Pomni grumbled to herself at least a thousand swear words before turning around and giving a 'see you tomorrow' to her. She tund back around and opened the office doors, taking a deep breath. The air after all day inside a building that smelt like ink and the souls of the depressed was always a good thing. She rummaged through her pockets before pulling out her key's and getting into her car—it wasn't new or particularly flashy but it got the job done of getting her home and to work so it was good enough. She carefully pulled out of the lot, cursing under her breath when she almost hit someone on her way out.

Finally got on the road and on her way home, the exhaustion hit her like a train and she felt like absolute crap all around, her co-workers decided today was the best day to slack off and since the senior's were out doing fuck knows what, she had to pick up all the slacked on work or they'd all have to stay behind to do extra. She'd curse them all out if she could but she did not have the energy or the guts to do all that anyway—but thats what the imagination is for. As she thought about publicly executing their team lead she heard a "pop" and several crackles from her engine and pulled her car to the side as it slowed to a crawl and eventually a stop on its own. "NO! No no no no!! Come ON" she slammed her hands on the wheel as her engine decided to completely give out—making noises like something straight from hell as she stepped out of her car and stood on the side of the curb, trying to figure out what the fuck could've caused it to give out like it did. "UGH NOOOO" she choked back tears over just how horrible her day was to begin with. She'd been yelled at by random people who were having issue's with their lawyers all day due to the system glitching out, doing ten times the paperwork for her team, some important file got corrupted right after she finished editing it, and after all of that her car decided to flip her the bird and stop working. Pomni would've burst into tears if she wasn't already choking on them- "AHHHH!" she slammed her hands on the hood of her car before sinking down to the sidewalk and just staring up at the sky, wishing she was anywhere and anyone else. "This day couldn't possibly get any worse" She put her face in her hands, not wanting to face the universe at all–she was marinating in her own anxiety when someone tapped her on the head, she looked up and thought death had come to take her or something like that.

Instead it was a guy, a very tall guy smoking a half finished cigarette and looking like he crawled out of a oil rig. "You good lady? Your car looks like it belongs in a damn junk yard" she wished death HAD come to take her, she did not wanna deal with this prick right now, but then again he was the first person to ask if she was ok. Of course a stranger who looks like a twizzler was the first to ask if she was ok."no im not ok, my car is fucked up so i cant get home" she scowled and remained sat on the ground, back to her car untill the guy rounded the side and popped her car hood open. "What the hell?" She almost snapped her neck to look at him. "Who even are you?" She sprung to her feet and watched as he started rooting around in her engine. "Wowww your a peach" he opened a few parts of her car's engine and swore at it when it heated up too much and burnt him."You ask too many questions" he steamrolled over pomni's words, she kept trying to ask him certain things but he ignored her like she was a bug he wanted to swat into space. "You could at least tell me what your doing, you are messing with my car" She insisted before he sighed and looked at her for a second, grease all over his rough looking hands and a look on his face that made her extra mad for some reason. "Im fixing myself a sub sandwich. What does it LOOK like im doing" he messed with her car's wires untill it eventually sparked and he moved onto a different part of engine. "Damn this thing is fucked up. What did you do to it?" Pomni wanted to strangle this asshole of a man. "I didnt do shit to it! It cut off by itself." Pomni didn't know why but she felt the need to defend herself from his accusations, "ive never met a man who's this damn whiney" she saw his ears visibily move at that comment and considered it a win. "And ive never seen someone throw a tantrum on the side of the road." She NEEDED to kill him now this was personal. While they went at eachothers throat's with insults and remarks—pomni heard her engine roar back to life like it wasn't just dead. "Oh thank GOD" she could've hugged him if she didnt want him dead over saying she looked like a funeral home at a clearance sale. "Well thanks for helping me out" he cut her off as he pulled out a cigarette "Dont thank me too soon, it's not a permanent fix so try to get it to a shop soon. Unless you need directions on how to do that" he lit up his cigarette and turned to walk away. "Oh and try not to throw a tantrum on the street next time, spare us all the sight" He walked off with his hand's in his pockets and car grease on his sleeves, while pomni stared at him in both pure shock at the fact he managed to walk around without getting punched in the face and at the utter AUDACITY one man could have, to fix a random women's car and complain about it the whole time like she had forced him to do it.

This fuckin greaseball of a man.

She stood there and watched him walk down the street as her face burned over his shitty comments. Why was she so mad over a stranger's opinion of her? She didn't even KNOW him, but all she wanted was to choke him out with that necklace around his neck. He deserved that at the very least. "Ive met donkey's with a better attitude than him" she grumbled complaints to herself while she got back in her somehow running car.

He was still a fucking asshole though.
