Work Text:

Deku had done it; complete mastery over All Might's strength - and All Might would be watching this training match against 1B.

Deku didn't usually show off, didn't like attention, didn't like stealing the spotlight, but he deserved to look a little cool after the months and months of training he had done in secret that had just paid off now that he could use 100%.

Deku was grabbed and pulled away by Uraraka, over to what he assumed was his group. He may or may not have forgotten to pay attention for a second there.

Ochaco Uraraka, Mina Ashido, and Minoru Mineta were the three he was parried with. Deku was already thinking up ideas, noting that it was probably better from a personality and a quirk standpoint if Mineta fought someone one on one.

Deku was just thinking, when he realized everyone was looking at him. He blushed and covered his face, hoping he hadn't begun to mutter.

“Wait,” Mineta spoke with his sadly familiar lisp. “Who are we up against again?”

“Neito Monoma, Yui Kodai, Nirengeki Shoda, Reiko Yanagi, and Hitoshi Shinso!” Uraraka answered cheerfully.

“Who?” Mineta responded, never taking time to memorize anyone's name.

Mina spoke up, also cheerfully.

“The blonde one that copies, the girl with the size quirk, the cute chubby boy who's quirk is twin impact but I don't know what that means, the girl with some kind of telekinesis that makes things pink ish, and the other purple boy!”

The group began to walk, as Deku started to think.

Monoma was probably gonna copy everyone but Shinso's quirk, the rest all have something to do with objects. He was going to be dangerous, Midoriya didn't want to risk taking him out himself because of his quirk. Maybe he could go for Shinso? No, Shinso was also dangerous, probably second, but Midoriya was too good at falling for his quirk. Who could fight him then? Maybe Uraraka? She's not usually one to participate in trash talk during actual fights. Then what about Monoma though? Mineta and Mina are actually pretty good at dodging, and Mina could just acid her way through any objects- Monona's quirk wouldn't be that bad for them! Sure, if he copied either quirk that wasn't great, but Mina couldn't be hurt by her own acid, and Mineta's sticky- um, Mineta's grapes, would bounce off him! And that left three people for Deku himself, he could probably

“Well that's our plan then!” Uraraka said.

“What?”

Mina and Mineta were nodding like this made perfect sense.

“Wait?! Was I mumbling?!”

Uraraka blinked at him.

“Were you not just talking normally?”

Deku would have died of embarrassment, but then he realized that he was already on the training grounds with everyone, and he had more pressing issues.

“How are we gonna find everyone?” Mineta whined.

Deku looked Mineta, before actually giving it a bit of thought.

“I think we should use me as bait, but I also think Uraraka should be a scout because Shinso will probably be hiding close by. Possibly in the dark.”

Uraraka brightened. “I have a flashlight in my costume!”

“Wait why? That's so stupid-”

Deku looked at Mineta like he was in idiot.

Mina gave Uraraka a hug.

“You're already preparing for rescue!! Congrats!!!”

“Wait!” Mineta said again, wanting to be the center of attention. “Shouldn't we go to the middle of this place and be loud or something?!”

“Actually… that might work…” Deku began to think once more. “You guys should stay here, while I go to the middle with Uraraka, I'll get them to chase me, Uraraka can go after Shinso, I'll jump around slow enough so they can follow me, but I'll lead them-”

“We should give him my quirk.” He said, looking at the series of 7 buttons in front of first.

“Why in the hell should we give him GEARSHIFT of all things?!” Banjo argued, his own eyes drifting to one button in particular.

“He's fast enough to not need to use it on himself, and the side effects only apply when you use it on yourself. He could get good at weapons and use it on them, or villains maybe.”

“We should give him Danger Sense!”

“Really, Shinomori? Give him the quirk that causes headaches right this minute in a fight?” Nana retorted.

Bruce spoke up, trying his best not to seem rude.

“Not to be that guy, but we all know Fa Jin would help him the most.”

“No! Black Whip is the most versatile-”

“But right now?! After training in a few days maybe!”

“Smoke-Screen! Smoke-Screen! Smoke-Screen!”

“I am going to say that is no one would notice if we gave him float, they would think it's that girls quirk, but I don't disagree with-”

“Who cares?! Black Whip would help-”

“Smoke-Screen! Smoke-Screen!-”

“Fa jin would make him even stronger!-”

“ENOUGH!”

First yelled uncharacteristically, his hands slammed down as he spoke, everyone had a face of pure horror.

“We can't argue about this now! Our emotions can play into 9th's! He is in a fight right now. We can't give him any of our quirks right now, this fight is important to him, Yagi's watching and he's just gotten control of his strength. We need to let him train. This conversation can be continued tonight, it's also important that we give him a choice. We'll wait for 9th to fall asleep, then have a civil conversation about which quirk is best to give him first.”

Despite Yoichi calming down, voice steady and calm, the rest of the vestiges were still looking at him in horror, his hands in particular.

First's eyes shot down, horror now filling every vestiges gaze.

When Yoichi's hands had slammed down, one of them just so unluckily hit the big white button in front of him.

Outside of the vestige world, Deku was running along rooftops, being chased by four people, only activating his quirk at a low percentage to jump to the next rooftop.

Deku couldn't describe the feeling with words, but it almost felt like something inside of him popped into existence, all knotted up, untangled itself, then every strand wrapped around the feeling of One For All.

It was odd, but it wasn't unwelcome.

Deku felt the strands buzz as he jumped to another roof top.

Then one of the strands… poked? At One For All. It didn't hurt too badly but it was enough to make him wince, his head dropping slightly.

And right above his head, one of Mineta's grapes soared above his head, narrowly missing him.

Deku had made it right to Mina and Mineta. Just in time, he was starting to feel kind of weird.

He needed to focus, just for a few minutes, then he could nap or something.

His eyes landed on the girl with short blonde hair, the one that could control objects by possession.

Deku darted down, falling into a roll. Around him was chaos. Monona had in fact copied at least two of their quirks, seeing as he was throwing giant bolts at Mina and Mineta, while the other three seemed to focus on him.

Deku's body started to twitch, but it almost felt right, if not just a little new. Then he twitched more, his arms and legs moving repeatedly. And then some of the strands seemed to dig into One For All if that made sense, but nothing was making sense so he just closed his eyes, for 8 seconds tops. He swears, just 8 seconds.

Did he… just black out?

Everyone that he was supposed to be up against were in the fake jail and looking at him with horror in their eyes.

Deku gasped.

“I am so sorry! I-I think I blacked out or something! Are you all ok?!”

“I think I'm gonna throw up…”

Deku's eyes darted to Shinso.

“Oh hey Shinso! Did Uraraka bring you here? Too bad I didn't see it..”

His quirk had turned off already, adrenaline keeping him jittery.

As Deku and the others walked back, he got more and more nervous. Not even his own team mates would talk to him.

And when he finally got to the rest of the class no one was speaking, just staring at Deku.

When they were lined up ready to hear what they did wrong and right, it took Aizawa a minute to speak.

“Midoriya, before I get into the break down of what happened, would you like to explain… that?”

Deku blinked, only speaking a second later.

“I am SO sorry! I think I blacked out or something! I closed my eyes for like 8 seconds and I couldn't feel anything and when I opened my eyes I was in front of the other group who were in jail! And I think my body was twitchy before that- and my quirk felt super weird- and I know I've been training a lot extra but I've never blacked out before!”

“8 seconds…” Aizawa muttered, almost looking baffled, and a bit stiff.

While everyone was freaking out internally, All Might, who still had blood running down his mouth from an earlier coughing fit, walked over to Deku.

With a gentle voice and smile, doing his best to be reassuring, he spoke.

“Young Midoriya, I think I am going to walk you to Recovery Girl to do a little check up.”

All Might practically dragged the boy away.

“Young Midoriya-”

“Do you know what happened?”

Deku asked, almost desperately.

“Yes,” All Might said after a minute, considering actually telling him. “And you didn't black out, my boy.”

Yagi would most likely never forget the moment.

On the screen, along with everyone, he had seen Midoriya close his eyes as the chaos of fighting bloomed around, and dash towards one of the other students so fast he broke the sound barrier. Multiple shock waves rang out as Midoriya had grabbed everyone on the other team, including Shinso Hitoshi, who Uraraka had been struggling with, and put them in the fake jail cell.

It was the 8 seconds he would never forget.

All Might explained carefully to Izuku, leaving out the breaking of the sound barrier and how it would all never be forgotten.

Somewhere in the vestige world, a white haired man, a black haired man, and a black haired woman apologized.

One, for accidentally pressing a button that caused every user's quirks to be at play. The next, for his quirk causing the 9th to go that fast. And the last, for what she was about to do.

Izuku felt a tug on part of the strands wrapping around his quirk, the next thing he knew All Might looked at him with realization in his eyes as he grabbed Izuku's leg to stop him from floating up too high.

Yagi smiled gently, pulling Izuku down.

“I think I know what's going on with you, my boy. And I think you're going to be just fine."

Notes:

Just to explain rq:

The buttons were symbolic of the users giving access to their quirks, but they did still work because they had allowed the buttons to work, like getting their quirks ready to be passed on without fully passing them on
