Work Text:
Obi-Wan curses as he leaps the railing and tumbles into the speeder Ventress had parked outside the casino balcony (she'd just smiled when he'd asked her why and now he regrets not asking further questions, a common state when it comes to Ventress) with a dead man's vault key dangling from his fingers.
"Excellent work," Ventress says as she guns the engine and drops them down into the depths of Coruscant's towers, smugness radiating off her in the Force. "I'll make a criminal out of you yet."
As if he wasn't one already in the Empire's eyes simply for being a Jedi, though his Human face is nondescript enough that most people don't give him a second glance now that he's not wearing Jedi robes and carrying a lightsaber at his hip.
"Stop lying," he says wearily, because alarms are going off in the distance as they slot neatly into the endless lanes of Coruscant's traffic. "You already have."
She smiles at him and pulls him into the seat next to her, fingers warm where they linger on his palm. "Do you regret it?"
Every day, he should say, but she'd dragged him out of his self-imposed exile on Tatooine to do something that makes life worth living. He can't say he quite thinks this is it, but—
Obi-Wan curls his fingers around hers. "I regret every time we follow your plan," he says instead. "Subtlety has its place."
Ventress throws back her head and laughs, long and loud, and Obi-Wan doesn't know when he fell in love with her but he does know that these days she's one of the only things that makes him feel alive.
He'll take that, especially since she has no love for the Empire either.
"Who paid us to acquire this?" he asks instead, since Ventress had been cagey about the client.
She turns towards the upper-class districts. "You'll like her," Ventress says, distaste in her voice now. "Kleya. She's in deep with something, but if she wants Imperial blood money, she's welcome to it."
Obi-Wan rolls the name around in his head, listening to its echoes, and wonders what future the Force might be guiding him towards now.
