Chapter 1: Dusty boxes

Chapter Text

Dust puffed underneath the box after hitting the hard surface of the rigid wooden floor.

“Finally! The last dusty box has entered, now I can finally take a century long nap – hey maybe when I wake up the war will finally be over!” Jet yelled, seemingly to no one but also pointed towards his (now) roommates.

“Don’t get ahead of yourself Jet, you still need to help unpack these dusty boxes before you sleep for 100 years," Zuk- Lee reminded “besides we’re going to need your help since I still need to go work at the teashop later today.”

Lee wasn’t quite the fondest out there for the hot leaf juice he brewed for customers daily, but tea always reminded him of his dear uncle, who Lee still missed gravely. He prayed to Agni every night that his uncle was safe and not imprisoned somewhere or worse, dead.

He could hear loud groaning from Jet followed by some small quiet sets of grunted murmurs on how Lee could drown himself in the tea he brews daily.

Jin, on the other hand, was chuckling to herself, deeming the boys' annoyance of each other as sheer entertainment, while already unpacking her first box.

“C’mon Jet, it’ll be fun unpacking and bringing some life in this grubby place. I know you cherish your time with Lee, but if we want to keep this place, we need some stable income.” Jin reasoned.

Jet huffed because, of course, her reasoning made sense. They often do, which made Jet feel even more annoyance.

“Speaking of, it’s already noon so I should head out now, just promise you’ll unpack at least one box before I come back.” Lee said as he glared at Jet – almost like a warning – and then walked out the door to make his way to Pao’s teashop.

Thirty minutes after Lee left, Jet forced his body to move and make his way to a box near the left corner of the room, sitting right next to door of the second bedroom.

That room was Lee’s, they all agreed before they started bringing in all the boxes earlier that day.

Jet’s room was not too far from Lee’s, only seven steps to the right, while Jin’s room was right next to his.

The rooms were all equally the same size – fairly small – only fitting a small desk and their futons.

He started unpacking the first box, which he soon found out was the kitchen stuff, which was really nothing actually – just three plates, one for each of them – and a couple pairs of cutlery packed in the cups, again only three.

Jet continued to unpack several other boxes that were just mainly tupperware that the previous owner begrudgingly gave to them whilst muttering to himself that he couldn't let almost homeless teens go off without any kind of “gear”. Jet didn’t really like the guy.

After unpacking a good chunk of the boxes, both teens decided that was enough for today, as the sun was slowly beginning to set.

Hopefully, Lee would come back with food since neither Jet nor Jin brought ingredients to cook something together. Sometimes he brought some small pastries from the teashop he worked in, which always made the two very happy.

While they waited for their friend to come back (hopefully with delicious loot), they unpacked their futons – Jin unrolling Lee’s while Jet unfolded the blanket that was paired with it.

An hour later, the sun was almost completely out of the sky’s view, just slightly noticeable with its orange hue blending in with the dark blue that started to take over.

Lee finally came back, a basket of food with him, as he dragged his body towards the table they were going to eat at from now on.

He dropped the basket onto the table and sluggishly made his way back to his new room, and dropped onto his futon – in the same manner as he’s done with the basket now on their table.

Jin slowly slided his room door closed, while Jet was already unpacking what was in the basket. All this unpacking' he thought annoyed.

The basket contained 3 pieces of dry bread and a bowl of what seemed to be half-marinated beef.

The two teens ate heartfully while lightly teasing on each other’s eating habits – Jin teasing Jet for eating so messily while Jet was teasing Jin for eating a lot.

After they finished, they washed whatever dishes they used during their meal and afterwards wrapped a small portion of Lee’s portion, for when he woke up.

Both teens said goodnight and closed the doors to their new rooms of their new home.

Life might finally be better with each other around.
