Work Text:

He sank into the covers, letting their weight surround him, the tufted comforter and weighted blanket sinking down on him. He had exhausted himself replacing the bandages on his arms and face and feet earlier today, and now all he could do was rest, even if he would have far preferred to stream.

He had tried to sit to do so, but the sensation of the floor on his feet as he had walked to the desk chair had been too painful. Sitting on the chair hadn’t helped, even though it was supposedly ergonomic, as some of his weight had still come down on his feet while he tried to get started on the stream. He had been forced to return to the bed, frustrated with it all. At least Toast would be home tonight after the tournament ended.

He didn’t feel himself falling asleep but it happened nonetheless; when he woke up, Toast was there, sitting on the bed next to him. He blinked blearily, and then let his eyes flutter closed again. Today really had exhausted him. But when he woke again sometime later, Toast hadn’t left. He had settled in, sitting against the headboard, and was playing a game Sykkuno didn’t recognize on his phone. He stretched- mistake- and settled back in, shoving his head into Toast’s side, where it was warm and comfortable. He had to close his eyes again; a disappointment, because it meant not seeing Toast’s.

“Hey, Sykkuno,” Toast greeted him.

“Welcome home,” Sykkuno yawned. “When did you get in?”

“A while, a while. Catching a bit of rest.”

It was nice that Toast pretended it was for himself; Sykkuno knew otherwise but the fiction was comforting, easy to join in on. He let himself relax further as Toast began to ramble about the tournament, about the players who had made mistakes and the ones who had done better. Toast hadn’t spared himself from the mistakes list either; he had played a bad strategy the first few rounds and lost, although he’d helped make up for it in the last few rounds.

Sykkuno had played in the last tournament but skipped this one; he was swamped with sponsorship videos at the moment and focused on them instead of travel. That was definitely the only reason for this. Nothing else prevented him from going, just a matter of bad timing. It was probably for the best that he’d stayed home to finish up the sponsorship videos, but he’d missed participating in the tournament. Hearing the details after was decent consolation, especially in the familiar tones of Toast’s storytelling. It was with a smile on his face that he was lulled back to sleep under the weight of the covers.
