Byler Things

Summary:

Stranger Things but byler happens early and Mike has a gay panic/realization while Will is missing.
This is definitely going to be very long and probably slow burn, especially considering I usually end up writing short chapters.
I have no idea if this is actually going to be good but I hope you like it <3

Chapter 1: Smalltown Boy

Notes:

Chapter name is from the song "Smalltown Boy" by Bronski Beat.
Enjoy <3

Chapter Text

Mike looked around at his friends, then back to the table where they were playing d&d in his basement.

"Something is coming," he announced ominously, "something hungry for blood."

"What is it?!" Will asked.

"What if it's the Demogorgon?" That was Dustin, "God, we're in deep shit if it's the Demogorgon."

"It's not the Demogorgon!" Lucas said, seeming so sure of himself.

The truth is, Mike was planning for it to be the Demogorgon, but since Dustin seemed to always be a step ahead, Mike changed his mind.

Will, Dustin, and Lucas argued about what it could be for a moment. Mike waited for them to settle down before slamming six Troglodytes onto the table.

"An army of Troglodytes storm into the chamber!"

"Troglodytes?!"

"Toldja it wasn't the Demogorgon." Lucas boasts.

Mike looked over his shoulder, for dramatic effect of course.

"Wait.. do you hear that? Boom! Boom!" Mike looked back at his friends, "BOOM!"

Will jumped back in his chair.

"That sound," Mike continued, "It didn't come from the Troglodytes, no, it came from something else." Mike slammed another figure onto the table, but this one was different. It's a large two-headed monster. "THE DEMOGORGON." Mike announced.

The other boys stared.

"Knew it." Dustin shot a smug look at Lucas.

"Yeah, yeah." Lucas shrugged and rolled his eyes.

"Will, your move." Mike looked over at Will. He could tell that Will wished it wasn't his turn.

"I-I don't know!" Will panicked. He turned to Dustin and Lucas for help.

"Fireball him!" Lucas suggested before Dustin could say anything.

"I'd have to roll a thirteen or higher."

"Too risky, cast a protection spell." Dustin said.

"No, fireball him!" Lucas argued.

"Protection spell!" Dustin argued back.

Mike rolled his eyes, "The Demogorgon is tired of your stupid human bickering! It stomps towards you. Boom!"

"FIREBALL HIM WILL!" Lucas shouted.

"Another step, BOOM!"

"Cast protection!" Dustin shouted, not as loud as Lucas.

"It roars in anger!"

Lucas and Dustin shouted over each other trying to get Will to choose what they wanted.

"And-" Mike started to say.

"FIREBALL!" Will shouted, as he rolled the dice.

Will rolled the dice too hard, it rolled off the table to the other side of Mike's basement. It landed by the steps. The boys ran over to the steps to look for it.

"What is it?" Lucas asked.

"I don't know!"

"Is it a thirteen?" Dustin asked.

"I DON'T KNOW!" Will shouted from under the stairs.

The basement door opened, the boys looked up and saw Mike's mom standing at the top of the stairs.

"Mom, we're in the middle of a campaign!" Mike told her, hoping she would let them play a little longer.

"You mean the end." His mom said, tapping her watch, "It's eight fifteen."

Mike got up and chased his mom out of the basement, into the kitchen.

"Just twenty more minutes!" Mike begged.

"It's a school night, Michael, and I just put Holly to bed. You can finish next weekend."

"But Mom that'll ruin the flow!" Mike pleaded.

"Michael."

Mike groaned and turned around, walking into the living room where his dad was trying to watch TV.

"Dad, don't you think-"

"I think you should listen to your mother." Mike's dad said as he smacked the TV, "DAGGUM PIECE OF JUNK!"

"Michael, I'm not changing my mind. I don't want you to wake up Holly, and you also need to get ready for bed." Mike's mom said from the kitchen.

Dustin was the last to enter Mike's garage, he's was holding a pizza box and finishing the last slice. Lucas and Will were already hopping onto their bikes.

"Mike, your sister has got a stick up her butt." Dustin complained, talking with his mouthful.

"It's because she's dating that douchebag Steve Harrington." Lucas told him, as if it was Steve's fault.

"Yeah, and she's turning into a real jerk." Dustin agreed.

"She's always been a jerk." Mike tried to tell them.

"Nuh-uh, she used to be cool. Like when she dressed up for our Elder tree campaign." Dustin reminded him.

"That was four years ago!" Mike pointed out.

"Just sayin'."

Dustin and Lucas biked out of the garage. Will lingered a second longer and turned back to Mike.

"It was a seven." Will said.

"What?" Mike asked. He was definitely not distracted by Will's hazel eyes glittering in the moonlight.

"The roll. It was a seven. The Demogorgon, it got me."

"Oh."

Will shrugged, "Well, see you tomorrow!"

Will smiled at Mike, then biked away, catching up to Dustin and Lucas.
