Work Text:
Carisi woke before the alarm, the gray light of early morning slipping through the blinds and cutting across the wall. He lay there for a moment, listening to the soft hum of the city outside, then reached for his phone out of habit.
No notifications.
He stared at the screen longer than he should have, then set it down. He told himself it did not mean anything. People were busy. Mornings were chaos in their house. It was stupid to expect something first thing in the morning.
The smell of coffee pulled him out of bed. In the kitchen, Amanda was already deep into the morning routine. Lunchboxes were lined up on the counter. Billie and Jesse sat at the table. Nicky was in his high chair, happily smashing banana into the tray with both hands.
“Morning,” Carisi said, his voice still rough with sleep.
Amanda looked up, smiled at him, and stepped in to kiss his cheek. It was quick, familiar, warm. Then she turned back to the counter. “Can you grab Jesse’s water bottle? She left it in her room again.”
That was it.
Jesse rushed past him, hair half tied up, already talking about some of her friends and how she was looking forward to band practice. Billie followed, struggling with her jacket until Amanda helped her with the zipper. Nicky dropped a piece of banana on the floor and laughed.
Carisi filled his mug and leaned against the counter, watching the morning unfold. He waited for the moment to come. It never did.

The courthouse was already crowded when he arrived. The morning blurred into arraignments, phone calls, and paperwork. He argued a motion. He reviewed a plea deal. Still, the date followed him through every room.
During a short break, he checked his phone again.
A few notifications. But all of them being old friends or colleagues he barely talks to.
He closed his eyes for a moment, then put the phone face down on the desk. He told himself not to be that guy. Not the one who needed a big deal made out of his birthday. He had grown up learning not to expect much from days like this. It was easier that way.
By the time he packed up to leave, the courthouse lights had shifted to evening. The halls were quieter now, the rush of the day already gone. Carisi walked out into the cold air and headed home, hands shoved into his pockets.
Outside the apartment door, he stopped.
Just for a second. He took a breath, squared his shoulders, and stepped inside, already telling himself not to hope for anything at all.
//
He stepped inside and closed the door behind him.
“Hello?”
The silence answered him.
For a second, the weight from the day settled back onto his shoulders. He kicked off his shoes and took two steps into the dark living room.
The lights snapped on.
“Surprise.”
The word hit him from every direction at once.
The room was full.
Balloons crowded the ceiling. Streamers were taped along the walls. The coffee table had been pushed aside to make space for people standing shoulder to shoulder.
Jesse and Billie were front and center, bouncing in place.
Nicky broke free from Amanda’s arms and ran straight at him, yelling, “Daddy!”
Carisi barely had time to react before he was crouching down to catch him.
Behind them, the room kept unfolding.
Olivia stood near the window with Noah next to her, smiling at him like she had known all along how hard the day had been.
Fin leaned against the bookshelf, already grinning.
A couple of familiar faces from SVU filled in the rest of the space, voices overlapping, laughter loud.
And then he saw them.
His mother stood near the kitchen, hands pressed to her mouth, eyes bright.
His father was next to her, looking proud in that quiet way he always did.
His sisters waved at him from the couch, already moving closer.
For a second, Carisi could not speak.
“You did all this?” he finally managed, looking at Amanda.
She stepped forward, one hand still on Jesse’s shoulder. “You really thought we forgot?”
The kids started talking over each other.
Jesse explained the fake forgetting.
Billie admitted it was hard not to say anything.
Nicky just kept repeating Daddy and laughing.
Carisi laughed too, the sound coming out rougher than he expected. He set Nicky down, then pulled Jesse and Billie into his arms at the same time.
His mom was the next one to reach him. She hugged him tight and kissed his cheek.
“Happy birthday,” she said, her voice thick.
His dad clapped a hand on his shoulder.
His sisters crowded in, teasing him for believing they would forget.
A bit after that, the noise fell away.
Amanda leaned in close and smiled. “Happy birthday, baby,” she whispered.
Carisi smiled, soft and a little stunned.
He leaned in and kissed her softly. “I love you so much.”
The room filled with noise again.
People talked over each other and for the first time all day, Carisi felt the tightness in his chest loosen.
//
The party had finally quieted down.
Carisi sank onto the couch, exhausted. The apartment still smelled faintly of cake and balloons. All of the guests were gone.
Amanda knelt on the floor in front of him, Jesse and Billie at her sides, Nicky still perched on his lap, swinging his little legs.
“We have one more thing,” Amanda said, a small smile tugging at her lips.
Carisi raised an eyebrow. “Oh yeah? What is it?”
Jesse bounced on her heels. “It’s a surprise!” she said, grinning.
Billie clutched Amanda’s arm. “Yeah! You have to open it! Open it now!”
Nicky wiggled in his lap. “Daddy!” he shouted, clapping his hands.
Carisi laughed, hugging him tight. “Okay, okay, I’ll open it,” he said.
Amanda handed him a small envelope. It was light but stiff. He turned it over in his hands.
“Just open it,” she said, her eyes sparkling.
He carefully tore it open.
Inside were papers. Official-looking, crisp, the kind that made his stomach flip. He frowned.
Billie leaned forward. “What is it?”
Carisi swallowed. He read the first page and froze.
Billie Rollins Carisi
Jesse Rollins Carisi
He blinked. His throat tightened. Nicky wriggled in his lap, and Jesse and Billie looked at him expectantly.
“You… you did this?” he whispered.
Amanda nodded. “We did. You’ve always been their dad.”
Carisi’s eyes filled. He held Nicky closer and wrapped his arms around Jesse and Billie. The kids squirmed happily, giggling and laughing.
Jesse looked up at him. “I’m so happy”, she said, bright and serious.
Billie snuggled into his side. “I’m so happy too,” she whispered.
Carisi sank back, holding them all, feeling the weight and warmth of their little bodies. After a moment, Amanda eased down beside him. Carisi leaned over and gave her a quick peck on the lips. “I love you.”
“Ew!” Jesse exclaimed, making a face.
Amanda laughed. “I love you too, but hey don’t forget, you still have to sign those,” she teased, nodding at the envelope on the coffee table.
Carisi chuckled, brushing his forehead against hers. “I’ll sign them. I promise.” He kissed the top of Nicky’s head, then Jesse’s, then Billie’s, letting a tear fall. “I love you all so so much.”
Carisi sank back into the couch, still holding them close. The envelope sat on the table, but it didn’t matter. The papers didn’t make them a family, they already were.
He closed his eyes. He had always known where he belonged. Now the world knew
