Work Text:
The whole fucking day was a disaster.
It had began just as usual. His morning routine started with him waking up to his pup pushing against his bladder, kicking it roughly.
Robby groaned as he felt their rough kicks internally.
"Jeez, kid." He muffled into his pillow. His hand stroked his slightly distended belly, earning a kick right on his hand. "Yeah… I know. I'm up." He glanced over to his bedside table. His alarm clock blinked 06:56.
Right on time…
It was like his pup knew he needed to get up around a certain time and made sure to kick the shit out of him as a wake up call.
With another groan the omega sat up, his nest a mess. Blankets in different sizes and from different decades all over, shirts and other clothing items from a certain alpha.
Robby let his hand brush over one particular zip–up hoodie. It was just a regular black one.
It wasn't anything special about it. Except… it was Jack's.
He'd forgotten it the last time they'd shared Robby's heat together. Instead of letting Jack know, he had forgotten it, the omega had hidden it in his nest. Holding it close to his nose every night.
It had been nearly nine months now and scent of the alpha had almost disappeared but it still brought Robby comfort like no other item could. Somewhere in the fibers there was a whiff of Jack left.
Maybe it was the fact that he was carrying the alpha's pup, maybe it was his inner omega that was screaming out for what he considered as his mate.
They weren't mates though. They were something but mates wasn't what they were.
And Robby tried to get his inner omega to realize that but as the months went by, it got harder and harder.
With a steadying hand on his bump he stood up from his nest. He had gotten quite lucky with his bump, it had only gotten as big as a small beer belly so if anyone had asked he'd told them he just needed to get back to the gym.
He only got a few steps towards the bathroom before a low ache cut through his lower back.
"Ah!" He winced out in pain, his other hand went to his back. Trying to rub the ache away. He took a few deep breaths to collect himself. But the steady pressure on his bladder made him push through, waddling slightly as he made his way to the bathroom.
The pains didn't stop, they were kind of bearable at first. During his walk to work he'd only gotten one or two. He didn't think anything of it, he was carrying a pup and carrying a pup came with aches sometimes.
During the day they had started to speed up a bit but he'd just breathe through them. The new attending, his replacement, had caught him amidst of one. He stood in the hallway, one hand on the wall, bracing himself.
"Hey, you okay?" Al-Hashimi asked, walking up behind him.
"Yeah." He answered curtly. His uneven breath was not convincing her whatsoever.
She sighed, "Are you sure? Is it something that I did?" She asked plainly.
Robby groaned. No, you have nothing to do with it. I'm eight months pregnant and working a forth of July shift. He thought to himself. With a shake of his head, he pushed off the wall.
"No… everything is fine." He gritted out through his teeth. He just needed a minute alone, to breathe, to just get his fucking bearings.
His eyes caught on the door to a supply closet at the end of the hall. Without thinking about it he made his way towards the door.
"Dr. Robinavitch!" Baran shouted after him.
Couldn't he get a freaking minute to himself?
Robby flung open the door and slipped inside. A tired sigh escaped him as he leaned his forehead on the cool wall.
The door didn't have time to close before the alpha's hand stopped it, slipping inside as well.
"Really? Everything is 'fine'? So you're not mad that I moved Langdon out of triage?" She asked roughly, challenging him.
Sure he was annoyed that she'd done that yes, but right at this moment he didn't really care. The cramps wouldn't stop and he felt the last of his patience slowly drain out of him.
The omega grit his teeth, "No, I am–"
He didn't get to finish the sentence. Alarms going off, screeching out.
"Code yellow… Code yellow…"
"Ugh!" Robby groaned, running a hand over his face in exasperation. "Just what I needed…"
Baran tried to open the door but to no avail. The doors locked automatically at the code. The omega turned around with a grunt and slowly slipped down the wall, the other doctor looked at him in question.
He shrugged lazily, "We're probably gonna be stuck in here for a while." He mumbled as he leaned his head back, closing his eyes.
The alpha huffed in annoyance, "Well… I don't really don't wanna be stuck here…" The 'with you' was unsaid but not Robby could heard it anyway.
Robby scoffed.
A sharp pain shot through his back yet again. "Shiiit…" He cried out, his hand rubbing his back in an attempt to soothe the ache.
Baran pulled out her phone, checking the service. She growled, irradiated as she forcefully turned off the phone.
"No service."
He hummed, eyes still closed. The nooks and crannies of the hospital had notoriously bad cellphone service. Another cramp rummaged though his body, this time moving lower and more towards his belly. Trying to manage the pain by just breathing was becoming difficult.
Robby doesn't know how long they were just sitting there in silence before Baran groaned again.
"How can you sit there?" She asked, throwing her hands up. "Say something!"
He opened his mouth to answer but a groan escaped him instead as one harsh spasm throbbed throughout his lower abdomen. The alpha's cold and irritated expression turned concerned.
"What's wrong?" she asked.
The omega's breath picked up speed at bit, his legs shaking slightly. His abdomen tightened hard, he bit his lip trying not to whimper.
As it released he couldn't help but let out a whine. A warm and wet sensation spread between his legs.
Fucking hell not today…
He glanced down and saw the growing wet patch spreading down his legs, he let out a soft whimper. With a shaky voice he muttered out, "My water broke."
"Huh?"
Robby took a deep breath in, exhaling slowly. "I'm in labor."
Her eyes dropped down to forming puddle under him.
"What?" she asked in disbelief.
A quite painful contraction came, making him moan out in pain. He adjusted himself. Spreading his legs further apart as his hands gripped his knees tightly.
He muttered out a soft and strained, "Fuck."
"Seriously?" Baran asked with a gulp. Her brows furrowed.
With shaky hands Robby unbuttoned his pants and hooked his fingers under the waistbands of both his pants and boxers, starting to pull them off.
The alpha quickly diverted her eyes, "What the fuck?" she exclaimed in haste, her tone just above a wheeze.
He kicked off his shoes promptly, pulled off his underwear and pants in one go. Wanting to go as fast as he could in between the contractions. It clinked softly as he thew them to the side. Robby took a steadying breath before he tried to get a look down there.
He couldn't.
The omega tried to feel around with his hands instead. It was a mess, wet and gooey all over. He slightly flinched at the feeling. Shortly his fingers found something hard pressing to come out, the pup's head.
With a huff he looked over at the other doctor. Baran was looking up at the ceiling, clearly uncomfortable. He lightly scoffed at her.
"It's nothing you haven't seen before." He panted out. A contraction came again, the pain much more instance and made him whimper out a surprised, "Fuck."
Baran glanced at him hesitantly. His scrunched forward pose, folding in on himself. His smell had started to seep through his scent patch, filling the room with a pungent mix of distress and hurt. Her nose twitched.
Baran snapped out of it, sprinting into action.
"We gotta get you out of here." She said as she moved to the door, banging on it with force.
No answer.
"T–the doors w–will open when the code is cleared o–or someone have to use t–their badge." Robby stuttered, letting out another whimper. His head started to feel weird. Like he was about to faint, he let his head fall back against the wall. A shudder wrecked through his body.
The omega's whimpers ebbed out as the contraction eased. His breath heavy and uneven, his whole body shook life a leaf. He looked up at her, letting out a cry. Help me… it hurts.
He felt pathetic, never in his life had he shown himself like this to another person… except Jack.
But he didn't count, Jack was pack.
Jack was his mate.
No! He wasn't.
Robby shook his head, his inner omega cried at the thought of giving birth without his mate— without Jack. He let out another whine as he gripped his knees tightly. His knuckles turning white.
"I don't— want t–to…" He stuttered out, tears welling up in his eyes. "B–Baran please… I c–can't I n–need– ugh..." Robby whined as he panted, letting out even more distressed pheromones. He grunted as another contraction started to build up, cramping intensely. The alpha quickly changed her course of action. Rummaging through shelves, taking a pair of gloves and towels into her arms.
"It's okay… It's okay. You're okay." Baran muttered to him as she crouched down in front of him. She put her hands on top of his, "Breathe…" She told him, taking deep and exaggerated breaths.
"No! I–I can't—!" He cried.
"Yes, you can. You you know what's going happen. You're a doctor." She firmly reminded him. His breathing still way too fast for her liking. "I need you to breathe." She said, once again taking slow and deep breaths for him to follow.
Robby nodded wobbly, trying to mimic her rhythm.
"Good." She said calmly, rubbing his hands softly with hers trying to give him some comfort. His breathing began to even out somewhat, "Let's have look, okay?" She nodded at him.
He swallowed nervously before whispering, "… Okay."
She nodded again and snapped the gloves on, positioned his legs so she could take a look. Robby felt her poke around,
He's probably fully dilated. The aches and cramps from this morning were contractions. And they've been consistent the whole day. He tried to concentrate on his breathing. Letting his hands fall to the ground, feeling the cold floor against his palm.
Taking a deep breath in… and out.
Another contraction started to simmer, coming in hot and fast. Pain surging though him. His instinct screamed at him to push.
"Ah!" Robby yelped, "I–I think I need to push." He panted, trying to keep himself from pushing but feels his body slowly starting to give in.
Baran nodded sharply. "It's okay! You're fully dilated, just push. I got you." She steadily said as she pushed his legs apart a bit more, gently rubbing his legs. "Push."
"Fuck!" The omega whimpered, moaning as he let his body roll sightly forward. Every fiber of his body screamed as a searing hot pain unlike any other tore through his body. His breath caught in his throat as he bore down.
"Uuuughh!" He wailed, his nails scratching on the linoleum flooring as he clenched his hands in pain.
"That's it… good job!" She reassured, feeling around with her hand again. "The pup's head is right there. Just… try to breathe through the pain."
Robby moaned in relief as the contraction eased. Drawing in air into his lungs desperately, heaving.
"Shh… breathe… breathe…"
He whimpered as he tried to slow his breathing down. In through his mouth, out through his nose.
"… I was not–t suppose to do this here." He whispered to himself. The fiery burning started to return, "S–supposed to do this in my—" He didn't get to finish before the next contraction hit full force. "NEST! AH!" He shrieked.
Somebody had aught to have noticed them by now. Somebody would have to have gone looking for them. Heard them. Heard his screams. The chief and an attending can't go missing this long before somebody was running around the whole hospital looking for them.
The searing pain somehow intensified, he feel the head of the baby descend further and further down. And soon enough he felt the telltale pain he had been reading about, the crowning.
"Ugh! Fuuuuuck!" He moaned in agony, leaning forward as much as he could without knocking his head against the alpha's. Her soothing voice the only thing keeping him somewhat in the moment.
"That's it, good push…"
The head stretched him wider and wider. He pushed with everything he had. Silently praying to… something that the pup were gonna be fine, that he were gonna be fine. He hadn't told Jack that he even was pregnant and he needed to be fine so that Jack could yell at him, call him an idiot.
Because of course he would, Robby had done something stupid and right at this moment he wanted nothing more for Jack to be here yelling at him.
Honestly he wanted him here in any capacity, screaming at him and scolding him… hugging him, kissing him, telling him that everything were gonna be alright. Anything just— he wanted Jack.
"Just a little bit more." Baran said, adjusting herself so she could catch the baby better. "One more push."
"I'm trying…" He huffed out in between his panting breaths. He felt the head starting to slip out more.
"The head's almost fully out now." She reassured him, grabbing the towels she had put the side. Laying them in her lap instead.
With a yelp he felt the baby's head pop through. The alpha's gentle and careful hands began to help him. Supporting the head as the rest of the body started to ease it's way out. He screamed with all his might as the shoulder's popped out, although much easier than the head. The rest of the little body slipped out without any trouble.
"There you go!" Baran said as she caught the pup, towel in her hands. The newborn began to cry almost as soon as their bare skin touched the cloth.
Robby sobbed in relief at the sound. He leaned back, letting the cold wall somewhat cool his sweaty and overworked body. With shaky hands he reached out for them.
"G–give me…" he muttered, totally exhausted. The faint and somewhat neutral scent of his quite upset pup found it's way up his nose. Making the omega keen vigorously, desperate to hold his pup.
The alpha cleaned the baby with one of the towels, drying them off quickly before leaning over to hand them to Robby. She made sure his shaky hands had good grip of them before letting go entirely.
"A baby girl." She said with a kind smile. She stood up in swiftly and with wide and fast steps she made her way across the room, looking through the drawers franticly. "There's gotta be something to cut the cord with." Al-Hashimi muttered to herself.
Robby though, he was to enamored with his daughter to care, looking down at her with awe as she cried. Taking in the sight of her. Her tiny arms and legs waving around, her scrunched up face, making her distaste of being outside of him known.
The small tuft of bright red hair grabbed his attention almost immediately, making him ache for his mate. He traced his fingers delicately brushed the small tuft, he let out a low chuckle.
"Well there's no doubt who your daddy is." His voice wavering, his chin quivering. The pup began to calm down as she scented her parent for the first time. He let his nose fall into her tiny curls.
It was over. She was here.
Baran came back, bringing more towels and other supplies. She laid it to the side before reaching towards the newborn. The fast action startled him, letting out a weak growl.
"Sorry." Baran mumbled, her steady hands attaching a small clip to the umbilical cord then effortlessly she fished out a pair of scissors out of her pocket and cut the cord that was binding Robby to his daughter.
"Now it's just the placenta left, okay? When the next contraction comes, push." she calmly told him. She looked down at the pup and assessed her as well as she could with an emotional newly parent omega.
"Hell of a first day on the job, huh?" Robby huffed weakly.
She let out a startled chuckle, looking up at him with a weary smile, "You could say that."
The omega grunted as he began to feel another contraction come. With just a small push the placenta slipped out. She caught it with a towel, with gentle touch she cleaned him up a bit. Without thinking about it she threw the placenta to the side. She took another towel and laid it over his lower region before she started to massage his abdomen to help his womb to contract.
"We gotta get you out of here…" Baran said hurriedly as he glanced over at the door. He readjusted his pup, reaching a hand down to take over the massage.
The alpha stood up and went to the door again, banging on it roughly making the newly born pup cry again.
"That didn't work earlier…" Robby mumbled and tried to calm his daughter, "It's okay…" He shushed gently.
Baran was at the door banging loudly and yelling now, "I need help in here!"
Robby zoned out, looking at his baby girl in his arms. Shushing her softly. A warm gush of fluid flowed in between his legs.
Oh no. Fuck.
He pulled the towel off and glanced down.
Blood.
Another gush came, then another.
And then another.
"… too much." He mumbled, starting to feel a bit lightheaded. His trained brain flipped though what he needed to do.
Massage the fundus. He started the massaging again.
He needed Pitocin… he looked around frantically. There were no medicine dispenser in here. His hands started to shake more aggressively. His daughter whimpered softly at the change, snapping his attention to her. A shiver wrecked through him, his pulse felt somehow sluggish yet so loud. Pounding in his ears. The crying of his pup went in and out of focus. His limbs felt way to heavy for him to hold up, his finger began to numb at the tips. An overwhelming feeling of terror washed over him.
He needed to keep her safe.
"Take her…" he muttered out sluggishly. Baran snapped her attention to him again, her gaze dropped to the puddle of blood that was getting bigger and bigger in between his legs.
"Robby?" She sprinted across the floor, practically throwing herself on the ground. His vision started narrowing, blurring the edges of everything.
"…I don't— I can't feel m–my f–fingers…" He tried to tell her. He felt her take his pup from him, his inner omega wailed at the feeling. Breathing felt hard.
"Stay with me." She sounded muffled in his ears. She repositioned him, laying him flat on the floor. He felt her press a towel in between his legs, applying pressure. "You're okay." She said, voice slightly shaking.
"HELP!" She screamed towards the door.
Robby's body felt so heavy, his vision blackened slightly. He turned his head to the side, his pup laid on a few towels beside him. Her tiny arms wiggling, he could hear her scream out for him. He needed to comfort her.
He reached out his hand, weak and sluggish.
"'m e'r…" He slurred.
His eyes felt so heavy, he tried fight it.
"Robby! Shit! Robby! Hey— hey— stay with me! Robb—"
Everything went black.
Jack had been talking one of the newer med students, Joy, through a central line when the code was called out. He didn't think to much about but poked his head out of central seven, catching the attention of the charge nurse. She stopped for a moment.
"Freaking Ogilvie… thought he saw a young patient running away so now half my nurses is playing hide and seek with a hypothetical kid. I gotta go, Princess is covering for me." Dana gruffly said, then turning her heel and walking off.
"Dr. Abbot?" Joy asked, grabbing his attention.
He hummed as he went fully back into the room.
"Is this right?"
"Yep! Looks fantastic." He answered, checking her work. He clapped his hands together in success, "Come find me when you've cleaned up." He added, walking out.
Zigzagging through nurses and other staff, he made his way to central. A soft and familiar scent luring him towards a certain chair with a familiar green jacket. He let his fingers graze the soft fleece, he missed him.
Robby had started to avoid him a few months ago. It had been a slow process, cancelling their hang outs once in a while started to become more and more frequent. And then before Jack knew it Robby started to evade him at hand off, only talking to him about work. The omega had even declined when Jack had texted him, asking if he needed him to come over for his latest heat last month.
He sat down with a sigh, putting his head in hand of a moment.
Something felt wrong about the whole thing. Robby was very avoidant yes, but to this extent?
No, something was up.
Still Jack didn't want to impose. Robby was his own person. He wasn't even his mate.
"Dr. Abbot?" Santos voice came from behind him. He hummed, lifting his head up and swiveled around in the chair.
"Yea'?"
She smiled tightly at him, holding out a chart, "Sixty-seven year old woman, slipped and fell into a glass cabinet, slicing open her arm. About a ten centimeter laceration on the left forearm, x-ray looks fine but she wants 'a real' doctor treating her." She said, exasperated.
Jack huffed out a scoff, "Really?"
"Yeah… she said she and I quote 'didn't want no baby-faced doctor that just came out of her diapers.' Can you take her?" She said and tried to hand him the chart again, shaking it slightly in front of him.
"And you're asking me because?" He asked with a tilt of his head.
The alpha resident raised her brow like he was stupid, "… Because you're old."
His mouth dropped in shock, "I am not old." He sputtered out, offended still taking the chart from her.
"You have gray hair!" She argued as he stood up, flipping through the chart quickly. The older alpha looked at her with a tiny smile tugging at the corner of his lips. He saw Joy in the corner of his eye and focused his gaze on her.
"Ah, Joy!" He called out, "Come here! Maybe you'll learn something." He added as he started to move towards the patient's room. Santos began to sneak away.
"Ah-ah-ah!" Jack stopped her, "You're coming with us." She sighed dramatically but followed them.
As he walked into the exam room he could smell the fear and pain of the patient.
"Hello, I'm Dr. Abbot, one of the attending physicians here at PTMC." He said confidently with a calming tone, "I hear you've have a bit of a gash on your arm."
The older beta woman sighed, looking over at Santos before muttering, "Thank you for getting a proper doctor."
Jack scanned his badge on the computer, looking over the x-rays one more time and checking the patient's name, "Ms. Stevens, Dr. Santos here, is an excellent doctor still we'll respect your wishes but I rather not have you insulting her right to her face." He said not looking at her, still looking over the chart.
Their patient looked somewhat shameful as she nodded, "Okay."
He backed away from the computer, taking a pair of gloves from the wall.
"All right, let's see what we're working with?" Jack asked as he snapped the gloves on. Taking her arm gently, made her hiss slightly as he lifted the gauze that was pressed to the wound. "Can you wiggle your fingers for me?"
With some strain she compiled and wiggled her fingers for him.
"Good. Joy what am I looking for?" Jack asked, pressing close to the wound with his fingers.
"Erm… if the tendons or nerves are involved." She coolly answered. He hummed.
"Why am I doing that?" He then asked, moving his fingers down her arm as he pressed it gently.
Joy sighed, "To see if we need to page surgery?" She said unsurely.
He nodded. Now pressing her nail for a bit. He turned towards their patient.
"Are you on any blood thinners?" Jack asked her with a small smile. She shook her head.
"No, sir!" She answered somewhat cheerily, almost like she was proud of that fact.
He turned to Santos, "Lidocaine, saline flush then sutures…" He ordered and focused his attention back on the older beta woman again, "You have your tetanus shot updated, ma'am?"
She scoffed, "Yes! I got my shot last time I was at my sister's. I cut my hand on her fence and had to go the ER." She said.
"When was that?"
Her face twisted in thought.
"Roughly?" Jack added.
"Around 2010." She answered.
He turned back to the resident, "Order a tetanus shot as well."
Santos nodded, moving to the computer.
"We are going to clean your wound up, thoroughly and numb it up so you won't feel anything as we close it up. You'll have some scarring but Dr. Santos hands are very steady and her sutures neat." He explained to the patient.
The older woman looked uneasy at the mention of the resident. Jack laid a hand on her uninjured arm.
"I'm going to supervise the whole time." he assured her and instant relief on her face was obvious.
Suddenly an out of breath Whitaker stopped by the room.
"Have you guys seen Dr. Robby?" He asked, huffing as he tried to catch his breath. His big sad looking eyes searching for something.
Santos shrugged and Joy shook her head.
Jack frowned before gruffly muttering out, "No… no for a while. Need an attending?"
Whitaker sighed rather dramatically.
"I need Dr. Robby but thanks anyway." He said, biting his lip nervously.
Joy piped up, "I saw Dr. Al taking with him earlier, maybe she knows?"
The young omega doctor nodded and took of again, holding his hand in front of his stethoscope to keep it from falling off him as he sprinted away.
The rest of the treatment went smoothly, Santos doing her part amazingly as he knew she would. Talking with the patient as well as showing Joy what she was doing and why she was doing it. He stood back observing quietly, piping in now and again.
Just as the alpha resident sutured one of the last of the sutures, Jack heard shouting down the hall. His eyes traveled to the door. It sounded urgent and he didn't know if the two other attendings still were AMA so he cleared his throat.
"I think they need me down the hall, you're almost done here anyway." He said to Santos and Ms. Stevens. "Dr. Santos will explain to you how to take care of your wound. Excuse me." He added before slipping out the room. Leaving her with Santos and Joy.
The shouting got louder as he walked closer to central. Nurses running towards the ruckus, he moved steadily after them.
He overheard Samira shouting, "How long has he been bleeding?!"
The alpha felt his gut clench uncomfortably, something felt off. The faint metallic scent of blood hit his nose.
All of a sudden a gurney came into view, sound exploding all around. But all that Jack could focus on was the scent.
The scent he had missed so much, the familiar scent he took such comfort in. Although now it was tainted with the pungent smell of fear and distress. The air suddenly felt thinner.
"Robby, hey, can you open your eyes for me?" Langdon shouted, flicking a pen over his eyes as he pulled the eyelids open.
Jack froze. His heart leaped down into his stomach, all the blood in his face left.
Robby?
"Keep pressure on the uterus!" Samira ordered Whitaker as they sprinted next to the gurney.
His eyes rapidly moved around the whole scene, trying to take it all in. Robby looked so pale on the gurney, barely conscious and the oxygen mask covering his face were foggy. There was blood all over the place, over the gurney, over the staff, all over… Robby.
So so much blood.
A sharp and furious cry emitted from behind the gurney.
"Two large-bore IVs! Four units o-neg!" He hears Al-Hashimi yell, fast and controlled. There's blood all over her as well, sleeves and her arms soaked. But his eyes locked onto the sound coming from the tiny infant in her arm.
He stepped closer without thinking. It was like he's being pulled forward by something, maybe instincts. The crying made his inner alpha restless, it started to feel like ants moved under his skin.
When he got closer he got a better look at the small thing, they were wrapped in a bloodstained towel. But his eyes got stuck on the red hair that was somehow so vibrant against the blood red stains of the towel. His inner alpha howled.
Mine!
His nose twitched and the smell of the pup invaded his senses. Her soft and faint scent, smelling mostly of Robby although it was getting fainter by the second.
Jack felt his pulse starting to pound violently in his ears. His hands shook as he curled them into fists. The air felt even thinner, his chest tighter, his breath caught in his throat. Something rough brewed in his belly. He continued to move closer towards them.
His gaze snapped to the one holding his crying pup. There's still some part of him that recognized that who he was seeing was Dr. Al-Hashimi but the longer he looked the more she started to go from the nice attending he met a moment ago into someone he didn't recognize, an unknown and unfamiliar alpha. A threat.
Holding his crying baby.
The urge to bare his teeth started to build up, his lip lifting slightly. His spine straightened and shoulders tensed tight. The alpha's eyes narrowed in on his pup. His thin and shallow breaths turned into low huffs, and then suddenly a sound teared out of him.
It vibrates through his body, low and territorial.
The only thing in his head was them.
Protect… Protect mate… Protect pup.
His lips finally fully forming a snarl.
His steps were heavy and quicker than before as he moved forward.
Mate hurt… Pup needs me.
His pulse was roaring in ears, pumping loud and making his whole body feel like a deep and all consuming pressure was building up fast under his skin. The alpha's vision tunneled in on his crying pup, blacking out all else.
He felt his limbs moving without his say. Faster and faster.
Suddenly he feels resistance, hands and arms pulling him back. He growled at it.
His instincts took over all control and he only thing he saw and heard was his pup… the only thing he could smell was his pup. His whole body shook as he fought against the resistance. The alpha's vision narrowed even more and then…
Everything went blank.
Dana was just done with her SANE patient when she walked back to central. Sitting down for a second just to take a breather, she rubbed a hand over her face with a soft sigh.
It didn't take long before someone wanted her attention.
"Dana?" A certain nervous omega asked, out of breath.
She glanced up at him, taking in the sight. Whitaker looked like he had run a marathon, hair slightly wet with sweat and chest heaving.
"What do you need?" She fished her glasses out of her breast pocket and put them on with a swift motion.
He gulped, "I–I can't find Dr. Robby…" The omega said, "Or Dr. Al-Hashimi. I've looked like… everywhere."
The charge nurse hummed, glancing out over the ED quickly. Looking for said doctors.
"Well, kiddo. I really can't help you there." She muttered with a shrug, she pointed to him, "If you're looking anyway, you can keep an eye out for Ogilvie's hypothetical runaway."
Whitaker sighed, nodding wearily. His eyes skimmed over towards the doorway into one of the hospital hallways.
"Have you looked over there?" He squeaked, motioning with his head.
The alpha nurse glanced over to the doorway and shook her head, "Nah, don't think so."
He nodded before jogging away, towards the hall.
Dana went, logged into her computer and started to work. I didn't take long before she got interrupted yet again. This time by the young omega again. He slammed open the doors with his body.
"I NEED SOME HELP OVER HERE!" He screamed, making all the heads turn towards him.
Samira and Jesse were the close by and sprinted over to him quickly. Whitaker lead them into the hall. The charge nurse pocketed her glasses, hastily following them. She quickly pushed the door open and the sound of a crying baby hit her.
"We need a gurney!" Samira yelled.
Dana promptly moved closer and almost bumped into Jesse as he sprinted away. The scent of blood hit her nose, making it scrunch up in disgust. As she got to the door, peering in, she saw Samira and Whitaker trying to get their chief to wake up. Rubbing on his sternum.
"Robby! Open your eyes for me." Samira said as she rubbed roughly. A faint grunt came from the bleeding omega.
Al-Hashimi, a baby in her arms, stood up. "He delivered about ten minutes ago, started to bleed heavily and lost consciousness after a short while."
"Postpartum hemorrhage!" Whitaker squeaked, as he packed more towels against the bleeding.
Dana slightly frozen at the scene, eyes locked on what she kinda considered was her best friend bleeding to death. Shaking her head, snapping herself out of it and crouched down.
"Hey, Rob…" She tried, still somewhat in shock. He was pregnant? How did the hell did he hide that? She stroked a hand over his forehead and pushed his sweat soaked hair out the way.
Suddenly steps came from the hallway then more nurses flooded in. Jesse with a gurney and more nurses in tow. They all transferred him over on the gurney together. The other nurses had brought oxygen so Dana took it and pressed the mask over the omega's face, strapping the band behind his head.
As soon as Robby were on it securely they rushed him out, Whitaker still keeping pressure, Samira helping the gurney forward and all the others running with them. Al-Hashimi and Dana were a few steps behind the gurney.
The doors slammed loudly as they opened them roughly. Langdon came running immediately.
"Need me?" He asked, hurried and clearly shocked by the scene. Samira nodded quickly and he went into action. With wide steps he kept up with the pace, fishing out his pen from his pocket.
"Robby, hey, can you open your eyes for me?" Langdon shouted, flicking a pen over his eyes as he pulled the eyelids open.
"Keep pressure on the uterus!" Samira ordered Whitaker, after he'd almost slipped.
Something caught Dana's attention in the corner of her eyes, she glanced over and saw a tensed Jack.
Beside her Al-Hashimi yelled, "Two large-bore IVs! Four units o-neg!" But the alpha nurse couldn't help herself as she was locked on the other alpha. Her instincts yelling at her that something was about to happen.
She observed him carefully. His breath was too fast, too shallow. And his shoulders way too tense. Worry started to boil in her belly. The eyes looked almost clouded over, something she's never seen on the alpha before. It was almost like slow motion when it happened.
How he instantly flipped from the calm and collected alpha she knew him to be. His posture changed, his shoulders went even tighter and he tipped his weight forward. Making him look bigger and threatening. His breathing subtlety changing. His lips curled like a snarl was starting to form. She heard the sound beginning in his chest, low and hostile.
Suddenly it hit square in the chest.
He was going feral.
"Langdon! Get him! Now!" She yelled, getting the senior residents attention. He snapped his head to her immediately. Dana pointed at the feral alpha then looked towards security.
"Ahmad!"She yelled at the security man. He straightened from where he was leaning.
Langdon ran to Jack, knocking into him and holding him back with all his might. But the alpha was very much stronger and bulkier than him, so still they moved forward. His growl finally emitting deep from his chest.
"Dr. Abbot!" He tried to get his attention, "Jack!" His feet slipped on the ground.
Jack bared his teeth as he fought against the younger doctor, his growls and snarls getting louder and louder.
"A–a little help here!" Langdon called out with strain.
Ahmad sprung up to them, trying to help with keeping the feral alpha controlled. Pushing against the feral alpha.
"How is he so fucking strong?" He huffed out.
Dana quickly moved closer and with a steady voice she tried to calm, "Alright, alright… calm down, buddy." Right now she needed to quickly calm him down and really didn't want to use any excessive force if they could help it.
"Hey, c'mon now—" She tried to get into his view but he swayed away looking behind her, "Jack, look at me… hey!" Dana snapped her fingers in front of his face but to no avail, she hummed and raised her brow.
She followed Jack's gaze, turning around, she saw how the gang of doctors and nurses took Robby into trauma one. She glanced back at Jack, his eyes were not locked on them. They were locked on Dr. Al-Hashimi and the pup as she followed the gurney behind with the wailing pup in her arms.
Jack's snarls and growls changed when the other alpha slipped inside the trauma room. They now ended with whines and whimpers, his fighting becoming more desperate.
Oh–
The charge nurse moved quickly across the floor. Without meaning to she almost ripped the door open to trauma one. Inside there were so many sound going on at the same time, screeching and beeping of different machines, people yelling and over each other, the furious and loud crying of the pup. Dr. Al-Hashimi tried to shushing the pup at the same time as she barked out orders.
Dana took large steps towards the alpha. As she got closer caught a glimpse of the newborn. She instantly knew why Jack had gone feral. That red tuft of hair made it quite obvious.
"Gimme the pup!" She said yelled at Baran, holding out her hands.
The alpha doctor snapped her face towards her, confused, raising her brow and her face scrunching up in question.
"W–what?" She asked.
Dana exhaled in frustration, motioning with her hands to outside. Dr. Al followed with her eyes to where she pointed and was met with the sight of an snarling and bloodthirsty Dr. Abbot barely being held back.
"I've got an angry papa bear out there that needs to hold his baby." She explained and held her hands out again asking for the pup.
The attending glanced over at the treating doctors then back at Dana, shaking her head slightly before she handed the pup over.
"Alright, take her." She said, clipped and went back to talking with the others.
Dana carefully took hold of the tiny little thing, holding them close to her chest.
"You're alright… I'll get you to your daddy." She shushed them as she slipped out the trauma room. With steps as fast as she could muster with a crying pup in her arms, she got back to the snarling and growling alpha.
"Hey!" She tried to get his attention. He stopped his growling instantly and glared at her.
Dana moved the crying pup closer so he could see. His nose twitched, taking in the pup's scent, his grip on the other men loosened. His posture loosening up, his teeth still on display but the snarls had stopped.
"See… look at her." Dana muttered out, nodding at Langdon and Ahmad to release him.
As they loosed their grip, Jack's shaking hands quickly snatched the pup from the other alpha, pulling her close to his chest. Chuffing softly trying to comfort her. His nose in her small puff of hair, scenting her.
"There you go. All safe now." She huffed, setting her hands on her hips. She sighed in relief. They got lucky. A feral alpha— a feral ex-military alpha on the loose would have ended catastrophically.
It only took a little while for Jack's eyes to begin to clear. He blinked a few times, to clear them more. A soft whimper came from his arms making him drop his eyes down to the tiny little baby.
His whole face softened at the sight. Jack let out a low grumble, he moved his hand a little so it was cupping their head better.
Suddenly a loud beeping sound echoed through out the space followed by even louder yelling. Jack snapped his head towards the noise, his eyes locking in on Whitaker preforming CPR on Robby's lifeless looking body. His breathing started to pick up a bit. Dana followed his gaze and sprung into action.
"Hey!" She said, getting into his view. Her hands brushed against the side of his arms, "Let's get you two somewhere quieter." She started to lead him away.
Jack let out an nearly pathetic whine, his eyes still focused on trauma one. Dana shushed him softly.
"C'mon papa bear…" She muttered, still trying to pull him away.
With heavy steps Jack compiled.
He doesn't remember a whole lot on the way to the exam room, he limped slightly as the prosthetic chafed against his residual limb. He probably scuffed it when he was fighting against Langdon and Ahmad.
He found himself to focused on the baby in his arms the whole way. How tiny they were in his arms. How they still faintly smelled of Robby. He let out another involuntary whine at the thought of the omega.
Dana's warm and gentle hand smooths his back. It brought him back more to the present, he shyly glanced at the nurse. She smiled at him, sympathy clear in her eyes.
"Hey, you back with me now?" She asked with a slight whisper.
Jack nodded faintly, tears starting to form in his eyes. Dana clicked her tongue gently. Rubbing his shoulder with her hand.
"Will you let us look her over quickly?" She leaned her head down to catch his eye. "You can have a hand on her during the whole time." The alpha nurse added.
"H–her?" He stuttered out, looking down again at the pup.
A baby girl…
Dana smiled at him again, her hand still on the side of his shoulder. She pushed, gently leading him further into the room.
Jack then realized that they were in the peds room. The cartoon animals on the wall was vibrant and loud for his overwhelmed senses, making him squint his eyes. Out of the corner of his eyes he saw Princess coming into the room with a baby warmer and Langdon in tow.
They wheeled the warmer to him and he reluctantly put her down into it but let's his hand linger right beside her head. Dana clapped him on the arm before slipping away and out the room.
Langdon and Princess checked her over. He know what they're checking and what they're looking for but his inner alpha was restless. He wanted to hold his pup, his baby girl close and away from all these other people. Now he knew that Princess and Langdon were not a threat but still his instincts were raw after being in a feral state now that long ago.
He found himself zoning out what they were saying, only taking in their body language, if they change from the neutral stances into anything else.
When Princess moved away he let out a little grunt, snapping his gaze to her. The nurse slowed down when she saw. Showing him with deliberately steady and slow motions where she was going and what she picked up, a blanket. His eyes tracked her as she made her way back.
Langdon left the as she started to clean the pup gently with the towel she came with. He went to the computer that was to the side of the room, scanning his badge and starting type up a chart. Jack ping-ponged his eyes back and forth between them, before settling back on his daughter.
Her little face now clean from the small blood speckles. Princess took the towel away and carefully wrapped her up in the new and clean blanket, the pup made some noise.
Jack moved his hand closer to her head, letting his fingers graze the side of it. Her petite nose twitched as she turned her head towards his hand. A little smile tugged on the corner of his lips.
The omega resident came back once again, a little hospital bracelet in his hand. With cautious hands he attached it to her wrist and nodded to Jack.
"We're done, you can take her now if you want." The omega said, stepping away from the baby warmer.
Jack without question picked her up again, tucking her close.
The charge nurse came back, smoothly slipping inside and across the room.
She leaned closer to him and whispered, "We're gonna go up to postpartum,—" She looked down at the pup, "Auntie Dana got you and your daddy a VIP room." She chuckled lightly.
Jack cleared his throat, snapping her attention back to him.
"I–is Mike… is he—" Jack tried to get out, his voice cracking and eyes stinging.
Dana hummed quietly. Laying her hand on his back, rubbing lightly.
"They sent him up to surgery almost as soon as he got into trauma one. I don't know more than that, sweetheart." She informed as she started to lead him again, "Let's go up."
The elevator ride felt never ending. Jack just stared at the doors the whole ride, lost in his head.
How did he miss this? How did he let his mate go through this alone?
His heart clenched uncomfortably at the thought. His mate, his Michael… his Misha all alone. A lump formed in his throat. He clenched his jaw.
The elevator pinged softly, breaking him out of his head. A hushed sound came from the doors as the opened revealing the calming aroma of the postpartum unit. The gentle milky scent hit his nose. It felt comforting yet a lump formed in the pit of his stomach.
Dana yet again leads him through the hall until a kind looking peds doctor approached them. He smelled of muted camomile and beta hormones, scent patches probably. He motioned to follow them.
"Hi, I'm Dr. Barnes. Come with me."
He lead them to a quiet room with a bed, a plastic hospital bassinet and a small couch by the window. Light green curtains decorating the windows and matching soft plush pillows on the couch. The room smelled neutral and void of scent, it smelled artificial. He took a big whiff.
"That's our scent neutralizer," Dr. Barnes said, leaning down and detaching a little plug from the socket. "This is so that when your mate comes here it will smell off you and not unfamiliar scents." He added with a warm smile.
"Now I know you don't wanna be separated from your little one, but I have too look over her and weigh her." The beta doctor explained calmly.
Jack gnawed on his lip nervously. Looking down at his baby then up again at the other man then at Dana.
She rubbed his back again, "Sweetheart, you know they won't do anything to her."
He gulped before he walked over to Barnes and with shaky hands he handed her over into his waiting arms. The alpha dried his sweaty hands on his pants.
"There we go! Hi, sweet thing." The pediatrician said to the little pup before glancing up a Jack again, "I'll be right back and then you get to feed her." He said, leaving the alphas alone.
The door closed behind him. Jack took a shaky breath and hugged his now empty arms around himself in an attempt to soothe the ache that started to brew at the loss of his pup. A low whine escaped him.
Dana sighed, "Let's get you off that leg." She muttered as she pushed his back making him move forward. She steered him to the couch. "Sit down."
He plopped down with a grunt and made quick work of detaching his prosthetic. He couldn't help to groan in relief. Dana snatched the prosthetic from his hand.
"Hey!" Jack yelped in surprise.
The alpha nurse placed it out of reach for him, "You need to sit down and rest that leg! I saw that limp." She gruffly said and walked over to a drawer unit that stood against one of the walls, opening a drawer and swiftly taking a blanket out.
Jack huffed in annoyance, crossing his arms.
"Stop being a baby." Dana unfolded the blanket, holding it out in front of her, "Scoot up, make yourself comfortable."
He complied, scooted back so that he could get his other leg up. Crisscrossing them and looking at the other alpha with a deadpan look.
She just gave him a tight smile and laid the blanket over his lap. Tucking him in slightly. The lump in his throat still there.
The door squeaked open, the furious cries of his daughter made them snap their gazes to towards the door. Dr. Barnes came in with the pup in his arms, a nurse with a bottle in her hand following close behind.
"Little miss is a whopping five pounds and six ounces. A healthy little girl although a hungry one." Barnes said, moving quickly to the couch. He bent down and placed her back in her father's waiting arms.
He let out a chuff in content, happy to have his baby back close as he clutched her close. The nurse that came with the peds doctor held out the bottle to him.
"Have you bottle fed a baby before?" She asked as Jack accepted the bottle. He nodded quickly. "Alright!" She said and moved away, giving them some space.
The agitated pup's cries stopped in an instant as she latched onto the bottle. Soft little grunts coming from her as she ate.
"Dr. Abbot?" Dr. Barnes said. The alpha looked up at him. "I'll be around here if you need me, just grab a nurse. Otherwise I'll come back when we know more about your mate." He told him with a courtesy smile.
Jack nodded and went back to looking at his pup. Both the beta doctor and nurse left them, the two alphas sat in silence while he kept feeding his daughter. After few minutes the bottle was empty, he put it to the side on the windowsill.
Dana handed him a rag that the nurse had left which he accepts with a hesitant hand. He raised his eyebrow in question, holding the rag stiffly.
The alpha nurse scoffed, "Put it on your shoulder when you burp her so you don't get baby vomit all over your back." She said then stood up.
Jack threw it on his shoulder and carefully put his little daughter so her face laid against it. Lightly clapping on her back, he glanced at her. She let out a low gurgle after a few claps.
"Hey…" Dana said, holding out her hands, "Let me take her for a second."
He snapped his head up, the alpha couldn't help himself as he clutched the pup tighter at the mention of giving his daughter away again.
She sighed before muttering out, "I'll just put her there, in the bassinet." She pointed at said plastic hospital grade bassinet.
Jack reluctantly gave her the baby, slowly. She huffed at being moved but settled quickly in the other alpha's arms, milky drunk and sleepy.
Dana looked down at her with a small smile. "You're very cute, young lady." She said with a soft grin. Swaying as she moved to the bassinet that was just by the bed. She hummed softly as she slowly laid the sleepy newborn down, the pup huffed softly.
"You should get back down." Jack said, his voice cracking.
The other alpha shook her head, "I'm needed here more. I'll go get you something to drink, be right back." She said and turned on her heel.
Jack went quiet, watching the door slowly close after her. His eyes moved to the sleeping baby that were just out of reach. Now he was all alone with his thoughts. He rubbed his hand of his stubble, it made a rough scratching sound. His eyes still on his daughter.
Oh fuck.
He was a dad now. He was now responsible for this tiny little helpless thing. Maybe all alone now…
A little whimper slipped out, he slapped a hand over his mouth. No don't think about that.
And Robby hadn't told him. Had he been planning on raising her all alone? Had Robby been planning on telling him about their pup? Had he given Robby some sign he didn't want the pup?
Questions tumbled around violently in his head.
Still one thought made it's way forward to the front again.
Maybe now Jack was gonna raise her on his own… without Robby.
The alpha felt his breath speeding up the longer he thought about it.
“Oh shit. Oh fuck…” he mumbled.
How was he supposed to do this? He couldn’t even handle the thought of it.
Jack whimpered, pulling his legs close to his chest and let out a whine. The lump in his throat felt so fucking big and made it hard to breathe.
“What am I going to do?!” He whined loudly into his knees. The newborn made a sharp sound at his distress, probably smelling the change of scent around her, letting out a small beginning of a cry.
His heart plummeted to his stomach. Snapping his head towards the noise.
“Shit! I’m sorry.” He mumbled, untangling himself from the blanket and without thinking he went to stand up. Flopping back down as he realized that he hadn't got his leg on.
The pup began to cry harder.
His heart picked up speed. He needed to get to her. His eyes frantically looked around the room, searching for his prosthetic.
Just by the edge on the other side of the couch, Dana had leaned it on the armrest. He scooted across the couch, almost getting tangled in the blanket again as he did.
His pup continued to wail, her tiny arms and legs flaying about.
Jack quickly tried to attach the prosthetic, his fingers felt big and clumsy all of a sudden. He growled in annoyance but it sounded more like a whine.
As soon as it were secured he practically jumped up. Limped to her and as quickly and steadily as he could picked her up. Holding her close to his chest.
He began to pace around the room. “Shh sweetheart. It’s okay.” He shushed, his voice cracking as he began to rock her.
She continued to wail loudly.
The alpha felt his panic rise and rise. His heart leaping up to his throat, his hands shook. His legs started to wobble a little. The fatigue was more noticeable now that the adrenaline had left his body. A sob tore through his chest. His daughter's wails tearing at his heart. His own tears ran freely down his cheeks.
"I know…" he whimpered. "I know… you want your papa, I know…" he said, his voice shaky.
"I want him too…" he sobbed out, holding his baby closer to his chest.
With trembling legs he made his way to back to the couch. His breath hitched as he tried to get air in. As did the baby in his arms, her face bright red.
"Sweetie… shh. It’s okay baby." Jack whispered, placing a small kiss on her head. "Shhh" he began humming, nothing in particular just humming. Trying to calm himself and the pup.
He didn't know how long he sat there, just shushing and rocking her. But after what felt like hours she started to calm down and soon enough the only sound filling the room was the alpha's soft humming.
Jack released a breath he didn’t know he had been holding in. He glanced down at his tiny baby in his arms and really looked at her.
Her button nose smushed against his chest, her soft auburn hair and chubby cheeks and fingers.
She was so beautiful. He grazed his fingers through her small tuft of hair, it was so so soft. Jack dropped his nose into top of the pup's head, scenting her gently.
His heart dropped.
He couldn't smell Robby on her anymore.
A tiny whimper slipped out of the alpha.
The couch dipped next to him and the comforting scent of Dana hit him. He hesitantly glanced up slowly. The soft warm eyes of Dana met his red and puffy ones. The other alpha rubbed his back gently. Jack's eyes drifted to her hands and water bottle in it.
He suddenly felt how thirsty he was.
Dana without a word, unscrewed the bottle and held it up for him. He glanced down at his daughter and readjusted her so he could accept the bottle from the nurse. Carefully bringing it to his lips and took big gulps from it before giving it back to her.
She took it and as she screwed the bottle shut she cleared her throat.
"I went by the OR…" She began. Jack straightened immediately. "Robby is alive—"
Jack let out a shaky breath in relief, a soft faint whine slipping out with it.
"— They stopped the bleeding, no major complications during the surgery. They were about to close him up when I left."
Jack's eyes filled with tears, although not falling. His chin wobbled as he bit his lip, "Really?"
Dana gave him a warm shaky smile, "Yea'… they're movin' him up to the ICU, the doc said you visit him when he was stable enough."
He glanced down at the bundle in his arms. A tear broke loose and ran down his face.
With a sniff he muttered, "I can't leave her…"
Dana shushed him, "You don't have to, if he's stable enough she comes with." she tells him calmly.
"… if he isn't?"
"Then I'll take her. We'll be right here." She patted his leg.
Jack shook his head violently, "Nope. No–no–no…" He clutched her closer, unknowingly putting out a distressing scent.
Dana held up her hands in surrender. "Okay! I'm not doing anything right now." She said calmly.
He put his nose in his pup's hair again, she let out a frail little yip. Jack nuzzled his nose softly against her head as he happily let out a croon.
When he had calmed down at bit Dana touched the side of his arm gingerly grabbing his attention.
"If it comes to that, I can sit close to the ICU with her."
Jack mulled it over for a moment, nodding his head slowly, "… Okay."
"Alright." The charge nurse sighed, stroking his arm a few times in comfort.
Silence fell over them. This time it didn't feel like all his thoughts and questions tried to drown him alive. It felt almost comfortable. His daughter's soft exhales of breaths against his chest calming his breaking heart.
A light chuckle came out of the alpha nurse, "Abbot?"
"Yeah?" he glanced over at her.
"You're a daddy now." she said with a smug smile. Knocking her closed fist on his arm.
He couldn't help smiling back, "… Yeah." Looking back down at the pup. "I am."
"Who would have thought that?" She huffed.
Jack let out a chuckle, "Not me…"
Dana hummed deep in thought.
"I didn't even know you and Robby were bonded." She blurted out after a moment.
"Erm…" Jack got flustered, "We aren't… " His face flushing bright.
She gave him a glare, like 'really?'.
"It's complicated." Jack groaned.
Dana huffed, shaking her head.
"It didn't look that complicated when you went feral earlier." She scoffed and leaned back against the back rest of the couch, crossing her arms.
Jack winced. He had been so caught up in it all that hadn't really thought about the fact that he had gone feral in front of everybody. He hadn't gone feral in years, last time was when he lost his wife. His ex-mate.
He swallowed nervously, "I don't know if he even feels the same…" He muttered. He started to gnaw on his bottom lip.
Dana sighed, "You both are idiots."
"What?"
"I swear I've had five different conversations with Robby about a mysterious hypothetical alpha that helped him though his heats. The last thing said that he was maybe starting to get too attached them. Something about a forgotten shirt and the he couldn't stop scenting it." She told him.
Jack felt his heart leap up into his throat. Remembering that he had misplaced his favorite zip-up hoodie months ago and had never found it again.
"Then he stopped talking to me about them around… umm… let's see. nine months ago." Dana said with a dead pan expression.
The door opened again.
"Dr. Abbot?" The nice nurse from before asked as she peeked her head into the room. Jack hummed, looking to her. She walked further into the room, "Everything okay in here?" She asked, squatting down in front of Jack.
He nodded stiffly. The alpha glanced down at her name tag, it said Ellie Miller.
"Your mate got out of surgery a little while ago, they had to do a laparotomy to find and stop the bleeding." She explained. The alpha continued to gnaw on his lip but gave her a slight nod.
"The surgeon found it quickly and the surgery went very smoothly. He's being wheeled from PACU into the ICU for observation as we speak." She continued with a soft smile.
Jack let out a shaky breath. Letting his eyes close in relief. Tension left his body slowly, a wounded sound escaped him. He felt Dana's steady hand on his shoulder once again. His inner alpha finally started to settle somewhat but was still on edge.
Questions swirled around in his head. How much blood did he lose? Any complications? Did he code? How many units of blood did they have to give him? Was he in pain?
But the only the strongest and most important came out, all meek and squeaking, "Can I see him?" His eyes still closed.
The urge to get close to Robby felt all consuming. To feel his skin under his, to smell his scent again. Jack felt his hand shake as he readjusted the pup once more, scenting on top of her head to calm himself down.
"We can take you up right now if you want but he maybe is sleeping right now." Nurse Miller answered.
Jack glanced down at his daughter for a second.
"C–can I take her with me?" He asked, stuttering. The thought of leaving her didn't feel as panic inducing as it did a moment ago, instead the overwhelming feeling of needing to be close to his mate teared at the inside of his chest.
"Not right at this moment, they need to monitor Michael a little first." The kind nurse explained, still giving him a gentle and understanding smile.
The alpha looked over at Dana, silently screaming for her help.
Dana patted him on the shoulder, "I can be right outside with her, sweetheart."
He nodded stiffly, swallowing the lump that started to form in throat yet again.
Nurse Miller gave his leg a gentle pat before she stood up straight and took a step back, waiting on him to follow.
Jack tried to stand up but found that all the strength in his legs had vanished. Dana noticed immediately. She held out her hands to take the pup from him so that he could use his hands.
"You'll get her back." She promised with a exasperated look, clearly done with his over protectiveness.
Without thinking about it too much he handed His pup over to her. As soon as she was safe in the other alpha's arms he perched his hand on the armrest of the couch. Propping himself up with a low groan.
His whole body felt drained. Jack took a few steps, limping slightly. His stump felt raw as the chafe on it rubbed against the prosthetic.
"Give." He gruffly huffed, holding out his arms to get his pup back. A little faint whine slipping out involuntarily.
"Alright… alright. You're getting her back." Dana mumbled as she carefully transferred the pup back into her father's arms.
The walk to elevator was quiet, the only sound was the echoing of their footsteps against the linoleum floor and the gentle talking of the staff around them.
He could feel the familiar feeling and pulling sensation that he had almost forgotten. The unrelenting and all consuming want to be with his mate. It was like a switch had been pulled by Dana's words earlier, his inner alpha finally getting to take the rains of his feelings. He couldn't deny it any longer.
Robby was his mate.
Jack leaned back on one of the elevator walls as they rode it down to the ICU floor. Trying not to let his thoughts run away from him, he had his nose buried in his daughter's hair. Focusing on her small huffs of breaths as she slept in his arms. Blissfully unaware of her father's inner battle.
He followed the two nurses like a puppet on a string. Letting them lead the way.
The scent of antiseptic and dulled pain gradually sneaked it's way into his nose. Getting stronger and stronger the closer they got to towards the doors of the ICU. They suddenly stopped.
A steady hand on his arm brought him out of his haze.
He looked up. Dana's tired but gentle eyes meeting his.
"This is your stop, buddy." She muttered. Holding out her hands to take the pup once again.
Jack's eyes wandered, looking through the glass walls trying to get a glimpse of Robby. But there were too many machines and other patients.
Dana carefully snaked her hands around the pup, he were to focused on searching for his mate. He trusted her with his daughter but the pull of wanting to his mate again triumphed over his feelings of having his pup close right at the moment. She were safe with Dana, she were pack. Robby was all alone, no pack with him and in pain.
As soon as his daughter were safe in Dana's arms and out of his, he stepped closer to the glass.
Nurse Miller cautiously touched his arm to get his attention.
"Wash your hands and gown up, and then you can go in to him." She said.
Jack frantically nodded his head, following her to a sink just to the side of the room. He thoroughly washed his hands. With detail and precision like he was going into surgery.
Miller cleared her throat, "I think you're done now, you don't need to over do it." She said, holding out a gown for him to take.
He took a bunch of paper towels and quickly dried his hands before turning around taking the gown from her hands. And with hurry putting in on, he tried to reach back and tie it like he'd done so many times before under worse conditions than this. But his hands shook so violently still. His finger felt so bulky.
"I'll help you…"
She got behind him so quickly he didn't even see her and flinched slightly as she hands touched his. Taking the strings away from him
He gulped, awkwardly holding his hands up against his chest.
"Thanks…" He mumbled gruffly.
In the corner of his eye he saw Dana as she sat down on one of the chairs that decorated the sides of the walls in the hall.
When she caught her gaze she gave him a reassuring smile and muttered quietly, "Go, we'll be fine."
Nurse Miller lead him through the doors.
The soft beeping of monitors and low hissing of ventilators almost sounding like an orchestra of suffering to his ears.
His heart started to pick up speed.
Were Robby on all of these machines too?
No, they would have told him, the part of his trained brain that still somewhat were still functioning. They would have prepared him for that.
The nurse stopped when they got to about the middle of the massive room, right in front of a curtain. She pulled it open revealing Robby.
A male beta nurse stood by the bed taking vitals, jotting them down. But all the alpha could focus on was his mate. His feet moving without his say closer to the bed.
Robby's face looked so peaceful yet so drained. His skin looked better now than the last time Jack saw him, much more lifelike. His hair was a mess, sticking out in different directions. His beard as well. It looked so scruffy. The alpha itched to run his fingers against it.
He stepped up to close to the bed, he reached out his hand. Hesitating before letting it stroke over Robby's fuzzy cheek, being mindful of the nasal canula on his face.
"He's been in and out of consciousness for a while." The nurse that were taking vitals whispered, giving him a sympathetic look before leaving. Nurse Miller came and placed it behind him, pushing it closer making him sit down on it.
She patted his shoulder faintly as she left, "Let me know if you need anything." She said and left him alone with his mate. He leaned his elbows on the bed.
Jack dragged his hand down to the omega's. Taking his hand in his own, being cautious of the IVs and cables as he brought it to his lips. Placing a few soft kisses on the back of Robby's hand. The pit in his stomach started to ease. He could to touch him again. He was here.
The alpha nosed at Robby's hand.
It smelled all wrong at first sniff. Antiseptic filling his nose first, sharp to his senses. Then beneath it lingered a trace of the metallic tang of blood. Under that the soft and a very brief scent of milk, the scent of an omega that just had given birth.
But still under all that… was Robby.
His earthy tones faintly breaking through it all.
Jack rested his cheek on the omega's hand, looking at his slack face.
"Hey, Mikey." he whispered, his voice cracking slightly. His other hand reaching up to caress Robby's hair.
He doesn't know how long he sits there just looking at him, gently running his fingers through the side of his hair. But after a while the omega's breathing started to change. His face scrunching up a little.
His soft puffs of air turning more heavy and aware. Turning more and more into whimpers.
"Hey, hey… it's okay." Jack said, still caressing his head.
Robby blinked sluggishly, moving is head towards the alpha with his eyes unseeing. His brows furrowed either in pain or confusion. With his hand he weakly reached for his belly. Letting out a wince as he touched it.
The omega mumbled something lowly that Jack couldn't apprehend.
Jack moved his hand from his hair, stroking it down his arm and giving the omega a gentle squeeze.
"What's wrong, Misha?" He asked, as he tenderly stroked the omega's arm.
Robby whimpered again, "M–my… pup." he says hoarsely still out of it as he weakly rubbed his belly. Starting to let out a slight distress scent as tears began to fall from his eyes.
The alpha crooned softly, reaching his hand up again. Wiping the tears away gingerly from Robby's face.
He shushed him softly, "She's okay. Dana has her." Jack assured him.
Robby hummed, whimpers getting softer and softer until they stopped.
His nose started to twitch, scenting the air before snapping his eyes to the alpha.
Jack saw how his drugged up brain puzzled together what he saw and smelled, how it clicked as he really recognized that it was really Jack who was here.
A rough sob tore its way up his mate's throat.
"Hey, it's okay." Jack shushed, continuing to dry his tears as they fell. Gently stroking his face.
The omega shook his head, clumsy and weakly, "I'm sorry…" He cried.
Jack tutted, leaning closer.
"What are you sorry for, silly?" He asked with a soft and quivering smile.
Robby's chest heaved as he took a deep breath.
"I wanted to tell you, it just— it was so scary. I didn't know if you even wanted kids, we never talked about it… and the months went by and suddenly it felt even harder to say anything—" He rambled, tears falling freely.
The alpha shushed him during it all. His hand caressing his tenderly.
"— I'm sorry… I'm sorry. A–are you mad?" Robby cried, his whole body shaking.
"No…" Jack tucked his head into his neck. Whatever he was feeling was not anger or resentment towards the omega.
Robby's hand flailed as he tried to grip onto him. The alpha caught it, bringing it to his lips and gave it a peck. The omega let out a soft sob.
He shushed his distressed mate. Nosing his hair, scenting him with so much love. He couldn't hold it in. Having him close again. He started to croon again, the low humming of it calming down the other.
When Robby had calmed down enough Jack let out a little chuff, placing kiss on the omega's forehead.
"Just so you know… you make the cutest babies." Jack whispered, trying to ease the omega's distress that still lingered. He felt Robby shake a little a chuckle vibrated through him.
"No, really! You do." The alpha said with a grin. Just as he did the beta nurse from before walked by, glancing in a them to check. He nodded for him to come closer.
"Excuse me?"
The beta walked up to the bed and looked over at them with a warm smile.
"Could you please bring in our pup? Just for a minute? My mate really wants to see her. She's right outside with my friend." He asked. He could feel Robby's breath hitch.
The nurse nodded, "Sure but only for a few minutes, he needs to rest." He left them alone to go get her.
"… Mate?" Robby squeaked. Snapping Jack's attention to him. Robby leaned back to look at him with his brown doe eyes, they were now red rimmed and little swollen.
Jack sighed happily, his hand coming back to Robby's hair. " I don't really think I can go back to us just being friends after this." he said, "Do you?"
The omega's face broke, shaking his head before diving his nose into Jack's neck again. Scenting him deeply as he let out a soft cry. Jack hummed as he buried his nose into hair again.
Soon enough the smell of their pup filled the omega's nose. He let out a chirp, leaning away from Jack.
The sight of the nurse coming in with their pup in his arms made the omega chirp again.
He tried to sit up more. But fell back down with a whine. His alpha leaned back a little, giving him some space. Gripping Robby's arm and back and helped him up, adjusting the bed so he could lean back again. Jack sat down on the side of the bed beside him.
The nurse gently placed the pup in the omega's arms. Jack helped him stabilize his arms, surrounding his arms around Robby's as he leaned close.
Robby smiled a wobbly smile, “Hi again, sweet-nose…” He whispered to her. A soft sob broke loose. Jack kissed the side of his mate's head, nuzzling his nose behind his ear.
"She's fine?" Robby asked, softly rubbing her fingers in between his.
"Mmhmm." Jack hummed in his ear, "A perfectly healthy baby girl."
The omega caught a glimpse of her tiny little bracelet around her arm.
'Baby girl Abbot–Robinavitch'
"You haven't named her?"
Jack was fidgeting with her foot, placing a few kisses on the underside of it. "Not without you."
Robby looked back down at her, humming in thought.
"Mila." He muttered, glancing over at him. "Mila Abbot–Robinavitch." He added.
A smile stretched on Jack lips.
"Beautiful name for a beautiful girl." The alpha said quietly before he leaned over. Bringing the omega into a kiss and then another and then another. Robby started to purr.
Jack couldn't help but to let out a grumble, content at last. His mate was here, his pup was safe. The alpha smiled into the kiss, Robby's purring got louder and louder at each kiss Jack placed.
The alpha pulled back a little, breaking their kiss. His mate's head flopped down against his collarbone. Still purring, nuzzling his head into him.
"I love you …" Robby mumbled into his neck.
Jack felt his heart swell at the words, his inner alpha yipping happily. He laid his head on top of Robby's.
"I love you too, my love." He swooned, grumbles escaping him. He looked down once again at their daughter— at Mila.
"You too, Mila. Daddy loves you so much." Jack said it like he couldn't hold in much love he had for her, like it was physically impossible to keep it inside for himself cause it was. The love he already had for their daughter were immeasurable.
The omega's purring got even louder at his words.
Footsteps made Jack glance up, the nurse was back, smiling at the scene but saw how tired Robby was getting.
"Think it's time for little miss to go back now." He said.
Jack hummed and tried to take Mila from the exhausted omega. But was met with a low whine.
Robby's hands gripping tighter around his pup, "Nooo… " He whined, "one more minute, please?"
Jack glanced over at the ICU nurse. He shrugged slightly but gave him a nod trusting Jack to keep an eye out for them. He knew Jack was a doctor.
The alpha glanced back down at his little family. Robby with his arms full of their pup, pushing as close to him as he could. Their little daughter's face smushed against her papa's chest, her auburn hair glinting a little as the lights hit it just right. Jack adjusted his arms so that he was supporting Mila more.
The purrs from the omega slowly started to get lower and lower. His head all loose, fell back a bit. Clearly he had fallen asleep. The alpha placed another kiss on the side of his head.
He whispered into his ear, "Rest well, baby." Before he scooped up their sleeping pup into his arms. Shushing her as she let out a little whine at being removed from his mate. Robby grunted in his sleep at her whine but didn't wake up. The alpha nuzzled his nose into Mila's hair, scenting her as he held her close.
It was like something clicked in his brain, she smelled right, she smelled of Robby again. Of Robby and him mixed together in perfect harmony. Everything was alright again. His mate was alive, their pup was safe.
Jack sighed in relief. Letting his hand slip down into Robby's hair again, running his fingers thought it softly. He leaned down as best as he could with a pup in his arms. Placing a kiss on his head.
His inner alpha finally at peace.
