Merlin panicked, and in his panic, he forgot the dozen or so spells he’d learned to handle situations like this. Instead, he reached for his magic on instinct, lashing out with unshaped force; he reached for something, anything, anything at all, as long as it would help!
‘Anything’ answered in the form of Nimueh’s magic, blooming in his chest. The magic unfurled like a great flower, and its petals stretched out. Then the screams cut off, because the petals were sharp, and Merlin turned on his side and was thoroughly sick.

Any new visitor to Camelot would have thought that it was a perfectly ordinary day; they would have looked around at the clean streets, the bright, sunny morning, and the bustling, smiling townspeople, and thought: this is a wonderful, happy, peaceful kingdom!
They would have been very, very wrong; it was, in fact, a kingdom in turmoil.
Not because of a war, or famine, or a rampaging beast or evil sorcerer’s curse. Oh, no; that would have been preferrable to the actual cause of Camelot’s turmoil. No, the real trouble was far, far worse, and it had everyone— from the wealthiest lord to the lowliest beggar— hiding their strain behind their smiles.
Arthur and Merlin were fighting.
