“Sorry I’m late,” James says, pausing mid-sentence to catch his breath, “I had to take a quick detour.” He doesn’t offer details, clearly thinking this explanation to be sufficient.
Regulus frowns at him. “What are you doing here? You aren't a prefect."
“Don’t be silly,” James says. “I’ve got the badge, see?” He points at his jumper, which, now that Regulus takes a closer look, does indeed have a prefect badge pinned to it. Potter grins. "Just think of this as an opportunity.”
Regulus crosses his arms and lifts an eyebrow. “An opportunity to deduct House Points for impersonation?"
“An opportunity to ask me to invite you for Christmas.”
Or: Regulus never once wonders where Sirius went that night. There’s only one option, and Sirius always did prefer his chosen family over his blood brother. So why is James Potter trying so hard to befriend him now?
