Summary
One of the things about a Bond Engine, as it turns out, is that bonds can’t exactly exist with just one person to anchor them.
Their echoes can, sure, and Lucretia’s frantic remembrances of her family gives enough juice to get her to relative safety, but it’s not enough. Even if food weren’t a problem, she wouldn’t be able to take off back to the stars, stay in orbit and well out of range of the towering Judges and their cannons until the Hunger descends again.
She tries, back at the start of that impossibly long year, takes off with flimsy paneling that shrieks and threatens to tear as she forces her way out of the atmosphere. She sits up there, up in the cold silence between stars, hands folded tight in thought as she tries to distract herself with planning. The Starblaster quivers, jolts, echoing and empty and barely keeping her from the void of space, and this masterwork of magic and metal has never felt so fraught.

Summary
After a few more turns, the aide pauses, looks back at Murray. “One moment,” she says, before knocking on a door and poking her head in. Her voice is low as she says something to the occupant and Murray picks at her teeth again. There’s nothing caught there anymore but it’s habit, a neat little fuck you that reminds everyone just who they’re dealing with. She’s still doing it as the woman pops back out, face tight and polite. “He’s ready to see you.”
“Thanks, doll,” Murray says, and sure, maybe she’s laying it on extra thick, but it’s her reward for spending time in this stuffy shithole. The lady’s smile somehow gets tighter as she steps aside, letting Murray pass.
Bolaire looks as unimpressed as a clay mask can where he sits behind the desk, hands folded over a stack of papers. He waits until the door has clicked shut behind her to ask: “Is it your intention to menace all the employees of this fine establishment, or does it come to you naturally?”

Summary
Sitting in her office, chair swiveled to let her look out the porthole at the blur of hyperspace, Baeri’s mind is stuck on the fact that she’s just wrecked things for everyone on the ship. It’s one thing to do stupid shit when you’re the only one on the line for it, stars know that she did plenty of that as a kid, but her actions affect more than just herself. Baeri’s supposed to know better.
Baeri forces an inhale, holds it, and focuses on the facts. They’re on the Empire’s bad side now, and in a much more tangible way than they had been before. The names of her ship and her crew have been recorded, and it’s only a matter of time before a bounty comes down on their heads. Money’s getting tight, especially because they weren’t able to make their delivery on Poltergeist. Kinori’s got blood on her hands, and she doesn’t seem like the type who’ll be able to wash it off easily.
With a spasm of her taxed diaphragm, Baeri is made to exhale. She got them all into this mess, and she’ll be the one to get them out of it. One thing at a time.
