„Listen,” Ranpo says, sharply, observing how Dazai’s spine stiffens the moment their eyes meet for the first time. “When I call or text you, you answer. When you need help of any kind, no matter what time it is, you let me know. This isn’t just for work, got it? Those are the rules. Break one and you’re fired.”
Dazai’s eyes drop to the phone held in Ranpo’s tight grip to the uncompromising set of his jaw, mentally weighting his options.
“That’s fair,” he huffs, holding up his palm in a ‘gimme’ motion. “I guess if it’s Ranpo-san, I can make an exception.”
Or, Ranpo is the only member of the Agency Dazai is not allowed to ignore or hang up on. Naturally, when the day finally comes, Ranpo knows, with inevitable dread, to expect the worst. He's right to.
