Drake was turning, leaving his room.
The same black, gooey thing in his chest reared at the sight of his turning back. And it burned his chest with a fury that went all the way up to his throat.
Damian couldn’t help the words he said next.
“But Grayson has given up on you.”
Drake halted, back still turned.
“And you know deep down that so has Father and Todd and everyone else. Because you don’t belong. You never did.”
OR
He might not have admitted it openly, but Damian does like Drake's company. After a fight with Tim which Damian said some things he didn't mean to, he tries to fix the new rift between them. By learning how to skateboard.
There's a competition, the winning prize being a skateboard signed by Tim's favorite skateboarder. And Damian was going to win. Two weeks to learn how to skate? For Damian, it was as easy as a breeze.

“Stargazing,” Tim squeaked. Robin cocked his head. Tim pointed at the cityscape, but unsurprisingly that explanation was not sufficient. “The house lights are kind of like stars, except with all different colors. And you can make constellations with them.”

When Tim gets critically injured during a mission Damian wasn't on the grandson of the Demon's Head surfaces and he makes it his personal mission to track down and torture the man who hurt his beloved Tim.

Summary
Damien vows is to find his own way and scrape and claw his way into a good position by his father's side.
He has not been offered any protection by anyone of high ranking or even his father so it is clear that he must earn his place on his own.
He scrapes and moves trying to adjust to the strange rules outside the league until one day everything changes and he is once again offered the privilege of protection, like he once had in the league.
Drake saves his life when they are out in civilian clothes and tries to protect him even when he is injured.
Damian does not understand how he came to earn this honor but he will not waste this chance.
Finally something makes sense.
He will swear loyalty and flourish as is expected of him in return for such protection.
AKA Damian is severely confused by the ways of his father and his family, Tim saves Damien from getting shot and Damian swears loyalty to him.
The entire bat family including Tim is very confused on what the heck just happened!?
