He expected someone similar to Albus Dumbledore, someone overly-righteous and unbelievably ignorant. He expected to defeat them promptly, for no adversary could be more powerful than himself. He expected to be unrestrained in his efforts to become the new Dark Lord of the Wizarding World once his enemy was dead.
What he did not expect was to be catapulted into the year 2008. He did not expect to be greeted by the ten-year anniversary of the death of Lord Voldemort. And he most certainly did not expect Harry Potter, his supposed downfall.
