Her name sounds exactly right in his rock salt rasp. It spells trouble. She shakes it off and tries to focus on answering the question. She supposes that in a different world she could be a student. She would live in a cozy apartment with some other girls, and this would just be a part-time job, so she would have time to attend lectures and write papers and go on dates.
But Inej does not live in that world. She lives in this one.

Summary
Inej sees Tante Heleen at a gala in Ravka, wrapped in finery.
To an untrained observer, at least. Inej can tell that Heleen’s wrap and dress are at least a decade out of fashion; and no amount of artful mending can disguise the fact her dress looks like the mice and moths have been chewing on the edges. Heleen herself looks like she’s seen better days; her once-golden hair is showing dark roots, there are lines around her mouth and eyes that no amount of powders and paint can disguise.

Nikolai invites Kaz Brekker to the Little Palace to assess security risks. This is widely regarded as a bad move by many.There is a ball, a lost--stolen--invitation and Inej in a ballgown. And a well-placed axe here and there.

He doesn’t bother answering for a while because he’s too busy looking at her, arm thrumming hot where it’s brushing against hers. Kaz drops the braid, and it swings like a pendulum between the two of them.
“Perhaps a ghost scared them all away,” he eventually says through a crooked smile.
