Thank you guys for all your hard work. It's been really exciting to watch this site grow into the fantastic fanworks resource that it is today. I no longer feel the need to scour massive numbers of livejournal communities to satisfy my fic cravings--which saves me lots of time (and sometimes frustration). I've seen more art, vids, and podfics being posted, which also fills me with glee!
As someone who likes to podfic a lot, I'm really glad that we can now embed audio. I'm really excited about potential media hosting. Any word on how the Torrent of Our Own project is coming along? It's been a while since I've seen any news about that.
Congrats on a great year! I hope 2012 is just as successful!
We're hoping to get fanart up and running this year, all being well. Regarding the Torrent of Our Own, I know that we were looking at some options being developed by other people, but I believe that development on those possible options seems to have stalled, so we are having to rethink what tools we might use. (The TOOO is largely being worked on by the Vidding Committee, though so I may have missed a more recent development - I'll try to point them this way!)
As you know, we can now do video embeds, and next year's project will be to get a dark archive off the ground - dark archive meaning a storage/cataloging reference space that's not publicly accessible. The point of a dark archive is preservation on the deposit library. This dark archive will, we hope, some day also be the basis for a streaming or otherwise accessible fan video site in future, but we're actually not rushing on that for this reason: unlike with the A03 itself, where nobody was going to build what fans wanted but fans, there are lots of people working on how to stream video easily, cheaply, & effectively. This is a situation where every time we check in on the available technology, it becomes obvious that much better stuff is in the works. So I don't think we want to rush in and set up something that's going to be totally inferior/out of date in five minutes. What we DO want to do is start preserving fan video works so that when out of the box, convert and stream your own video software comes out of beta, the work is preserved and available.
