I can only really speak for myself but i use purple hearts because purple is one of my favorite colour. XD I leave a spam of hearts to help show i liked the fic, but don't really know what else to say. I'm not very good with expressing why i liked something, but with the drought of comments in fandoms, i try to combat it. So to see that an innocent and heartful gesture is potentially seen as negative or has a meaning it doesn't is discouraging and makes me think that the probably hunderds of heart comments i have left is seen as unwanted makes me think feel i should stop with it. 😔 I won't, but reading this honestly made me sad. :(
Yeah! I use purple hearts too. Purple is also my favourite colour and its a lot of other people's favourites too. Thing is is that, I can't remember where is heard it from, but a purple heart can symbolise that perhaps you are... trying to make a move on someone is the best way I can describe it and I personally think that that is messed up honestly. I have also never particularly had a problem with emoji spamming, and people do ask me about making art for me quite regularly (Which I am really flattered by). But this post from AO3 has scared me into perhaps putting only author comments on. I also do see Vulgarweed's comment and even though I do agree with it (Being that heart emoji don't translate onto AO3), I am still scared to use hearts on here. What I do is I use red heart emojis in my notes (❤️) and typed out hearts in comments (<3) , cuz I reply to all comments that aren't talking about making art. I like to reply and read everyone's comments tho and like to think I can spot a scammer, cuz I don't like the idea of messaging off of AO3, because you are being taken away from other eyes.
I also spam hearts! Usually I'll use assorted colours randomly. I don't always have the time or words to expand on how much I liked a fic, so I leave hearts as a kind of second kudos. I don't recognize any usernames (I'm only really active in the Assassination Classroom and My Hero Academia fandoms), but I'm sorry if any of my comments got taken the wrong way.
