Alec turns to smile at his boyfriend, shrugging sheepishly. Magnus is staring at him fondly and it’s enough to remind Alec of why he’s doing this in the first place. Magnus deserves to be shown off, even to his dubiously-accepting parents. He doesn’t want them to find out about his boyfriend from someone else, so this is necessary. Stress-inducing, but absolutely necessary.
Or: Alec and Magnus are happy together, and Alec decides it's finally time to tell his parents about his wonderful boyfriend.

“You heard about the Lightwood dinner, right?” she asks softly. Lydia nods even as her brow furrows, clearly confused about where Clary is going with this. “I know Magnus and Alec have been together for longer than we have, but do you… Do you ever think it’s wrong of me to keep this side of me hidden from almost everyone?”
There’s a beat of silence, and Clary wonders what is going through her girlfriend’s mind. Lydia has never complained about the fact that Clary isn’t out, but that doesn’t mean much. Clary doesn’t want her girlfriend to end up resenting her for being in the closet even though everyone around her would probably accept her relationship without blinking.
Or: Clary isn't ready to come out, and Lydia makes her understand it's more than okay.

Simon opens his mouth to say something about how beautiful Izzy looks, even when she’s abashed and embarrassed and unsure about what to say, but someone interrupts them before he can get a single word out.
Because of course someone has to come ruin their perfect morning in their favourite coffee shop. Of course the prejudice and discrimination couldn’t just stay hidden in the Shadow Word. Simon has always known mundanes were sometimes just as bad – or worse – than shadowhunters and downworlders, but he didn’t think they’d have to deal with anyone here.

Alec flicks his gaze back towards Bane, whose hair is spiked up and streaked with gold. The colour only adds to his beauty, and Alec wishes he could tug at those strands and see how soft they really are. None of that is appropriate to say in the middle of a meeting, though, and Alec feels his blush extend to his neck. To his left, Raphael snickers under his breath.

Izzy grew up in the Shadow world, and as progressive as her people have been lately, Maia knows they would never have let the young Lightwoods go to a pride parade. Simon, on the other hand, was probably the type of teenager to avoid all types of big gatherings.
So really, she understands why neither of them attended Pride parades before, but it doesn’t make it any easier to explain what the event will be like to them.

Clary and she have been dating for a little over a month and, so far, she’s managed to avoid any and all conversations about sex, but she knows she won’t be able to avoid the topic forever. Especially after their slightly heated make-out session the night before.
She knows her girlfriend is confused about Lydia’s reluctance to take things further, but the blonde doesn’t know how to tell her why she struggles so much with anything that has to do with sex. “Alexander!” He sounds happy, and Alec can easily picture his smile, fond and warm and brighter than anything the shadowhunter has ever seen. “And no, I just wanted to speak to you. I’ve been waiting for you to make the first move, but then I figured you might be the type to worry about this sort of thing. Raphael comes to understand that Magnus usually summons ice cream for Alec when he’s having a particularly bad day. And obviously, with Magnus gone, his main source of joy and ice cream is gone. So, Raphael sighs a little and offers Alec his company instead, which the shadowhunter gladly accepts.
And then, the next day, he shows up at the apartment with a tub of vanilla ice cream – he figures Alec likes things plain – and shrugs off Alec’s gratefulness because really, it was just sitting in his freezer and he didn’t like vanilla at all.
