Summary
Skip was a wave. He knocked her down over and over again. She would find her footing for a while, only for the waves to come pouring back in. It was easier not to fight it. It was easier to not stand back up, but there wasn’t really a choice.
When you’re drowning, you fight for the surface, even if you know it’s futile, even if there is no hope. Your body will fight for air on instinct.
It was a fact of Penny Parker’s life. One day, he would finally drown her. Each time the waves would knock her down and she would wonder if this was finally it.
That’s the thing about the ocean - it’s relentless.
Really, at this point, it shouldn’t be a shock when the waves came for her, but it always was

Well, it wasn’t an really an accident, but that’s what people call it, even if there’s nothing accidental about smoking a joint and pouring back a bottle of liquor before getting into your truck.

She leans against the cool marble. It reminds her of the gun and how cold it had felt in her hand.
(And then she’s thinking about Ben and his hot blood staining the asphalt. His blood had been warm, but by the time someone pulled her stiff fingers from him — not him, his corpse — he had been cold.)
“Sometimes, I miss him so much, it hurts to breathe.” Penny nearly whispers and the ways she says it, it really is as though releasing the breath to speak had physically pained her.
Or The team tries to teach Penny to shoot a gun. It goes about as well as you’d expect.

Penny puts a wide grin on her face. It’s big and cheerful and even reaches her eyes, because that’s a skill she had perfected a long time ago. It’s the smile she uses on concerned teachers and social workers alike.
It’s a smile that proves just how fine she is.

Penny thought about death — how it lingered on your body like sex. And she knew that if Skip were to die, she wouldn’t be the only one carrying his death.
She thought about guilt. Thought about those other girls hearing he was dead. Their shoulders would slump in relief, and then their shoulders would curl forward with the guilt of it.
She thought about her own shoulders at that age — how they had shrunk in on themselves.
