Summary
Evan Buckley knows he's screwed up. He knows that getting high every day, drinking the night away, and sleeping with anyone who will look at him twice isn't healthy. But he's alone in LA, his life is going nowhere, and so would there be a reason for him to stop? Even meeting a lost kid at a grocery store who asks for his help shouldn't move the needle on his life choices. But that kid (and his attractive father) stick in his mind and make him wonder what the hell he's doing with his life.
Eddie Diaz is holding on to a thread. He knows that he's doing the best he can, that trying to balance a demanding job as a firefighter, his son's needs who he is always seemingly failing at least according to his ex-wife, his girlfriend who wants to move their relationship to the next level, and his family's expectations is a losing battle. But he shoves it all down, and focuses on taking care of Chris and making sure his son is happy and has all that he needs. He just doesn't expect that a blond with a birthmark over his eye to keep popping up.

Summary
A year after what seemed like a fever dream, Buck is actually thinking his life has turned around. Sure, he's living in his girlfriend's (ex-girlfriend's?) apartment, but he actually has somewhat of a family, a support system, in place. And he's starting a new job that requires him to use his skills and where he can actually make a difference in the world! And recovery isn't supposed to be easy, so that itch under his skin that means he needs to do a line just needs to disappear, and if his libido goes a little higher because of that, so be it. The shock of who his new work partner is shouldn't have any input on his life's trajectory.
A year after Eddie gave up hope he would ever see Buck again, the man who had started to change him is a little more than a memory and the occasional dream. That is, until Buck walks into the 118 as the newest probie, expecting Eddie to act like nothing is wrong. He's shoved everything from those few months far into the back of his mind, never to be examined, because he's been doing better, right? He's fixing his life and if it feels like he's drowning on dry land, that's no one's problem but his own. One blond with a birthmark is not going to change that...he shouldn't change anything.
