Summary
They're not a cult, not really. It's not their fault most people around the multiverse didn't know or believe Nightmare was real.
Oh, but Nightmare is very, very real. Real enough to reward his most dutiful (and only) followers, at least. Even if he does need a vessel to do it properly, sometimes.Series

Summary
Once, he'd been shown the throne room. It was a majestic room, tall and rimmed by archways in a faded bronze, with a crystal chandelier that looked to be onyx. Instead of a throne sitting in the middle of it, like would've been expected, though, there was a tree stump, cut down long ago, dry and withered. Nightmare hadn't said anything to him about it, despite the fact he'd offered information about the other places when Dust'd found them.
Dust found himself coming back to it, time and again. It was such an interesting place, with a heavy atmosphere that threatened to border on unpleasant. He couldn't help being drawn back.

Summary
Dust’s sockets were closed, very clearly asleep, but what caught Cross’ attention, much more than any possibility of sleep-walking, were the— the eyes along the right side of his face, dark and bottomless, green pupils staring him down with a bright glow.
This... wasn’t Dust.

Summary
He was hiding, because he was bitter, and he didn't want to sleep through another day and night just to wake up to someone's disappointed face at seeing him instead of Nightmare. Because he wanted this, craved the realness that being with Red brought him, because Red never looked at him like a vessel, because Red saw him. And that was enough for Red. Dust was enough for Red.
Maybe the thought of the whole cult thing was losing its luster.
