Summary
"To fight to liberate Ba Sing Se was to turn on their nation, on what he surmised was their upbringing, on part of themselves. Pakku could not conceive of that turmoil, could not imagine how they managed to maintain the inner balance to continue to practice their art. Particularly, he thought, now, as he saw General Iroh stand before his nephew, the Fire Prince Zuko."
Zuko fights for Ozai, defending Ba Sing Se from the Order of the White Lotus. He and Iroh are both forced to pay the price for it.
AU in which Zuko never joins Team Avatar.

Summary
The déjà vu is immense, and no number of the Water Tribe girl’s desperate assurances—It’s alright, it’s alright, I know what it looks like, but he’s alive, he’s fine, he’s still in there. It’s just…he won’t be able to move so much anymore—none of these assurances change the image before him, so similar to one on the worst day of his life.
Zuko lays there on the ground, still like a corpse.

Summary
"'What about your country?! You’re betraying it!'
'No,' Iroh’s voice is quiet, but firm. 'I am not. Though I am sure that it seems so to Ozai.'
'You are, you—'
'I am not.'
Zuko seems to hear the finality in Iroh’s voice and drops the subject, then softens slightly, in such a way that only his uncle could notice. 'But you…how could…you betrayed me.'"
Iroh could not allow the Avatar to fall into Ozai's hands, but he will nonetheless do whatever he can to spare his nephew the pain of the consequences.Series

Summary
The silence is heavy and awkward, humid with unexpressed emotion, and it clings to the convict’s skin, until finally the man on the other side of the bars breaks it with a soft voice. “My son…Lu Ten, why have you done this?”
Iroh is just as baffled as he is heartbroken by Lu Ten's betrayal.
(AU in which Lu Ten doesn't die at Ba Sing Se, and Iroh becomes Fire Lord.)

Summary
Dignity’s not important, Pakku! Bumi had chastised him once—weeks ago? months ago?—through the wall. Yesterday, I told her about all the ways the War meant that the people in Omashu—well, before they conquered it—couldn’t have any fresh fruit, and the soldiers beat me a few times in front of her and then they burnt me after the lesson after they took me away from her and I screamed and screamed both times! And then I laughed!
There are things Pakku tries to cling to, even now.

Summary
Pakku continues: “Having your brother to spearhead the rebuilding efforts has been a great help.”
“I’m sure. Sokka’s waited his whole life for a chance to help lead the Tribe.”
When he speaks again, Pakku’s voice is soft, hesitant. “You would be a great help as well.”
“No.” Katara turns away. “I can’t...I need to...I miss home. I miss Sokka and Gran-Gran and Dad more than anything. But I can’t...I have to be here.”
Katara, in the Fire Nation.
AU in which the final battle ends slightly differently.

Summary
He’s not explicitly invited to the Agni Kai, but no one attempts to hide it from him—though in retrospect, long after, once he finally has time to process, this fact will strike him as odd. Wouldn’t someone have expected him to protest, had he known? But then only Azula knew the depths of his ambivalence in Ba Sing Se, and had apparently elected to keep it hidden in her sleeves like so many of her plots, no doubt to brandish as a secret weapon should the need present itself.
Azula steadily moves her gaze to the platform in the center of the arena, and when Zuko follows it there, his hand finds the branded skin on his face, stomach tumbling out from within him, blood flushing like he imagines it would if the sun were to disappear from the sky.
He cries out, leaping to his feet. “What’d they do to him?!”
AU in which Ozai escalates things.
