Most galling of all, in Leonard McCoy’s opinion, was that Jim didn’t even look like he should be dead. The unnatural stillness, however, made the doctor concede all that was left to do was sign the death certificate and append his resignation. Two weeks later the world had shifted again, but barely dead or not, recovery from radiation poisoning is a long uncertain road. Summary
Jim knew Bones had a daughter, of course. It wasn’t long after they’d met that the truth of the whole damn planet was revealed to be more than just money, friends, reputation, house and an expected future, but a toddler with Bones’ hair, hazel eyes, and heart-shaped face. Every Thanksgiving and Christmas at the academy the doctor had disappeared to Georgia for several days, returning from the carefully controlled visitation with a mixture of melancholy, anger, and a dire need for expensive whiskey. Despite that, Joanna had remained simply a fact about Bones, rather than something Jim had actually experienced first-hand.
They had decided to go to a beach to celebrate Jim’s slow recovery finally reaching a turning point... Now they were going to Georgia instead. Both of them.

“Pass the hot sauce.” Leonard still couldn’t believe those were his last words to Jim. An offhand remark during an interminable banquet to celebrate first contact between Starfleet and the Hav'yhr. A banquet where Jim had been a complete hit with the alien leadership, and they had learned too late that Hav'yhr culture had an interesting concept of personhood and fair compensation. Now there’s something lodged in his abdomen with Kirk-McCoy DNA, and if his scans are right he’s only got about six weeks before his life could change forever.
