With their combined efforts, they succeeded in diverting the meteor, sending it hurtling towards the sun. What they did not account for, though, was several smaller chunks that had been unaccounted for due to malfunctioning equipment, which flew straight into the earth; the league only had enough time to deflect them away from populated centers, believing the worst was over.
One week later, most of humanity would be gone, busy cities would be turned to silent graveyards, and even the vibrant countryside would fall silent, no animals left to make any noise.
