"You don't understand, I can't be a mother, I don't know how to take care of a child! I'm a damn cuckoo! Do you know what cuckoos do? We are opportunistic birds; we don't raise our own young, we lay our eggs in the nests of other birds so that they will raise our offspring! I don't even have maternal instincts." Isabel said, her eyes filled with tears.
"Then do it..." I said, comforting Isabel.
" what?"
"Put your baby cuckoo in my nest, I'll take care of it." I said, while she stared at me in disbelief.
"Would you do this for me?" Isabel looked at me with a mixture of expectation and apprehension.
"Let's make this work."
Isabel's head rested on my shoulder. "Thank you... You always find a way to help..."
"You would do the same for me."
Isabel smiles. "Yes, I would."
Isabel downplays her minor loop lag issue, prioritizing her endless work as a ymbryne, and then the problems keep piling up. As the symptoms intensify, she eventually experiences the rarest symptom of all: autogenesis, a spontaneous pregnancy of a clone of herself. Now she and Alma have to deal with the difficulties that will come with the little clone.
