Maria taught him from early age how to wear masks like a second skin, how to work the press, how to smile for the cameras even if his world is crumbling around him, how to hide his weaknesses from the spotlight.
It was by no means intentional, but that's what he learned anyway.
Because they had managed to successfully fool the world into thinking all was well in the Stark home, when nothing could be further from the truth. Not when Howard was out more than he was in, not when Maria coughed up flowers on a semiregular basis.
Stark men may be made of iron, but it takes far more than that to carry on when it came to the Hanahaki disease.

This was so great! I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone write with this trope where Tony actually goes THROUGH the surgery option, let alone mULtiPLe ones…
But well it IS pretty refreshing to see it like this. Plus- a Demiromantic Tony? Heck yeah!!!
Their first time in writing romance is amazing! I loved the way they characterized Tony here and his development and thought process throughout the story. Definitely one of my favorites and deserves to be in my bookmarks!

One of my absolute favorite Hanahaki fics for this ship!!! Author nailed it down to a T with this trope- perfectly depicting Tony’s stubbornness and zero-self-preservation! And Natasha, as always, seeing through Tony’s bullish!t and lending wise words~
I also love how they twisted the trope into a magical curse instead of in-universe canon, which makes it a unique case for Tony only, and we get to have Dr. Strange here!

Tony got used to not breathing after Afghanistan. He remembered the agony of it, the black spots in his vision as the world went out of focus, cut through with angry red spikes of pain. He never thought he'd have to do it again.
But if it was to keep Steve safe, well. There was little Tony wouldn't do. Even if it involved coughing up flowers.

Maybe it wouldn't be so wrong to try again.
