Five years later, Nier has returned. Kaine has awakened. The Knave of Hearts is dead. It should have been a triumphant day, even if Yonah is still missing, but any hope of celebration is soured when the village casts out Kaine and Emil out of fear. Nier stands up for his friends, but is unable to sway them. Kaine and Emil, ashamed of their appearance and the fear that they've induced in otherwise innocent people, retire to the plains outside the city walls to wait for Nier, and maybe do some catching up themselves.
Kaine is used to being treated like a monster. As far as she's concerned, she is a monster. But one thing she's realized is that beneath Emil's frightening exterior is the same impossibly good kid. He doesn't deserve this. For all he's fought and lost, he doesn't deserve their scorn.
She can't give him the recognition he deserves, and she's never been good with words, but Kaine still wants to do something nice for one of the only friends she's ever had.

Clarke tugged her bottom lip between her teeth, trying to ignore the way her heart kept thudding against her ribcage. She wouldn't have been surprised if Lexa could hear it, too.
“Do you... want to come upstairs with me?”, she asked, as her hand moved to Lexa's knee.
She didn't miss the sharp intake of breath before Lexa nodded, very slowly.***

Opening the door to her office, Lexa steps inside with apologies falling from her lips. “Ms. Griffin, I’m really sorry for keeping you waiting. I had some hiccups in my morning, I’m usually much more punctual than this.”
The woman settles her phone down and straightens up, lengthening her spine before getting up. All Lexa see is blonde hair neatly combed falling over one shoulder, and she looks away for a moment, quickly putting her bag and planner away on a table by the entryway before meeting her new head of finances.
“There’s nothing to worry about. I’m sure you had a difficult morning,” the words find Lexa before she looks up and her blood turning into ice, little crystals keeping her heart from beating.
