Ms. Darbus decides she wants to break the boundaries of high School theater and put on a Romeo and Juliet inspired musical starring two male leads, besides the objections of the school board there's another big problem: what self respecting straight teen boy in their right mind would willingly step into one of the lead roles? Enter Troy Bolton.
Ryan Evans is the only other boy that auditions for the lead roles and thus gets cast as the Julian to Troy's Romeo, unfortunately for him he quickly develops a crush on the other boy. He's not the only one going through inner turmoil though, as the subject matter of the play brings up insecurities and questions that Troy has been attempting to keep down.
Meanwhile, Sharpay Evans, furious that the nature of the musical prevents her from securing a lead role demands an important role in the musical, ending up with the character of Tybalt, which fails to please her, but she ends up with the suitable distraction of "helping" Gabriella get into her character as the comedic and fiery Mercutio.
