Bookmarker's Notes
Hua Cheng grips the hairpin so tightly he breaks skin. He’s failed his prince again. He failed him over and over again. Gods above and demons below, just how incompetent can he be?
An army follows him, and still the man he loves has to suffer.Xie Lian pushes his hair back, the gesture achingly familiar and eerie as he stands there now, robes, freshly dyed crimson, fluttering in the invisible wind, skin snow-white, and eyes black as onyxes—a strikingly stunning creature from the deepest pit of hell.
Xie Lian has eyes only for Jun Wu, and says, “My ancestors have been serving this land for generations. I am the last legitimate heir.”
He takes a step forward, and his smile drops.
“You forgot that, for as long as this is Xianle blood, it will answer to me.”
Shen Jiu must have figured it out the moment he saw the prince inside the circle, and stopped Hua Cheng from interfering, even knowing that it would cost His Highness his life. Xie Lian’s wishes over Xie Lian’s life.
Hua Cheng turns numb with unrelenting pain that sears him to his soul, and he can only focus on one thing—sucking out every last bit of resentful energy still clinging to His Highness. He carries so much hatred and resentment in him already, what’s a little more? His heart is quiescent for once, even as it struggles, happy, until—
Hua Cheng wonders distantly if he can still die. If he can, he’d like it to be now. That tugging, pressuring, enormous feeling in his chest… He’ll never feel more like this than he does now, too intense to withstand, too terrifying to lose.
His entire life, he’d fought anyone claiming authority over him. He used to have nothing but disdain for men—and women—turned utter fools for love. Yet now that he is like this, he feels nothing but utter contentment. As if this, and not his demonic transformation, has finally made him the person he always longed to be.
“God or mortal—that never mattered. The first time I saw you—that was it. You were mine, fate or doom—I didn’t care which. Your Highness.”
“Your Highness. This one is a murderer and a demon. I have wealth, but my debts are paid in blood. I have no house to bring a wife to, no place where I belong. My entire life, I’d never had a home of my own—until I found one with you. I have no right to ask. Your Highness should definitely not agree. I am everything they say about me—a violent man, a monster. Destruction is what I know best.”
“But for Your Highness, I will learn to plant gardens. For Your Highness, I will learn to be a home. If Your Highness will have me—and if not, your wellbeing and happiness are all I’ll ever pray for. Yes or no, there’s nothing I’ll ever desire more.”
This isn’t the right moment for it, but Hua Cheng can’t help the way his heart swells with the cruel, selfish sense of victory, a dark, blood-scented sense of possession. He’s obliterated the competition. This here, is his prize telling him he’s left everyone in the dust. He is the strongest, he is the worthiest. He’s been chosen by this incredible being. Nothing else will ever compare.
Somewhere at the back of Hua Cheng’s mind is the thought that this moment defines them both so well. Choosing love over fear, love over anger. Hua Cheng exists currently on the flutter of Xie Lian’s lashes, he lives and dies on that broken half-note that separates a moan of pleasure from a groan of pain, good pain from bad pain, sweet tears from bitter, and he yearns for all of it, and he’s afraid he’ll drown.
He won’t feel any warmth unless he starts a fire. Unless he burns the world to the ground. He knows, but his eyes still flit from person to person, because it hurts, and he yearns…
It’s the nature of the sun to shine for everyone. It’s the nature of Hua Cheng’s dark, wounded, demonic soul to crave all of its light for himself. It’s the only way he can be certain that he will get any.
“San Lang. I may be everybody’s spring, but you are mine. To me, you are the river that breaks the ice; the will, the courage of a seedling to burst out of the earth and bloom. You are the tartness and the sweetness of fruit, the rain on my cheeks, the thunderstorm whipping the ground in the distance.”
“You’re so essential to me that it terrifies me. You could keep me all to yourself, and I would let you. You could destroy me with a word, run me through with a sword, and I wouldn’t resist. But I know”—he lands back on his heels and looks up—“I know you would never do that.”
