Midoriya told himself that it was just a fluke, that she'd simply had an off-day, and it worked. It worked right up until the school called her to say he'd been fighting.
(Truly, Midoriya didn't know that curling up into a ball on the floor as he was kicked counted as 'fighting'.)
His mother hadn't even given him a chance, dismissing his explanation as an 'excuse' and refusing to listen to a word he said.
She'd caressed the back of his head in a mockery of care as she pushed him out of the house and into the cold, cold night. Midoriya had turned, to look her in the eye, but the door was shut in his face before he was able to.
There was something poetic about it, he supposed, how one single bone cost him everything; his entire life now worth less than the gravel beneath his feet.
He stumbled away from what was once his home and into the infinite darkness that welcomed him, welcomed him as if it were the painful reality of fate.
