When he joined Ilya’s line as the center, he thought that having his husband by his side would be the best thing to happen to the two of them: they trusted each other, cared about the game, and cared for each other. Both him and Ilya had particular things about their hockey performance that kept them professional on the bench and he liked it like that. Shane felt that he and Ilya would be able to maximize their communication and production on the ice, or he hoped so. It was his beautiful husband under that helmet, after all.

Summary
Instead of Soap being recruited into 141 as per the original lore, it goes a little something like this:
Ghost wakes up in a pit underneath a building with a bomb attached to him. Soap has trained as an explosives and ordinance disposal tech, and is the only person that could be found to come and at least try to save him. It should be fraught, and tense, and miserable all around, and it is; a whole lot of Ghost slowly losing his mind while Soap does everything he can to save his life. But it would probably be easier if Ghost wasn't a stress-flirter, and if Soap wasn't the kind of endlessly competent that he loved, and if, by virtue of their situation, they didn't keep ripping open each other's wounds and then patching each other back up again after.

“I am in control. I make the decisions,” Shane murmured to himself for the hundredth time that hour.
He felt a little bit insane, sitting on the cold bathroom floor locked in a civil war with himself. On one side: his rational brain; on the other, the oily, persistent whisper trying to sell him a regret he couldn’t afford. His stomach squirmed with what could either be nausea or anxiety—it all felt the same at this point.
Just do it. You’ll feel so much lighter and cleaner once it is all out of your system.
The temptation to believe that lie was a physical weight. He was exhausted from the fight. He could feel his dinner sitting like a stone in the pit of his stomach, heavy and stagnant. He knew he probably would feel better if he could get rid of it. But… fuck.
Or
Shane is struggling with a dangerous urge and is flighting a lonely battle with himself on the bathroom floor. Until Ilya reminds him that he’s not alone.

Weiss stared out the window, into the pitch darkness that swallowed the forest on either side of the road. Deep in those shadows, she caught a glimpse of reflected light, as if their headlights had illuminated a piece of metal, or a puddle of water, or…
Or an eye.
She almost called out to Winter. But she knew what her elder sister would say; it was probably just an animal, and even if it wasn’t, they had an entire armed security team with them. One lone hiker was no threat. There was no reason for them to turn around. Asking would only make her father angry, and worse, make Winter think she was being childish.
So Weiss said nothing, and they drove until the forest gave way to a tiny, dilapidated town.

Ilya hadn't responded for several hours. Just before warm ups, at the last possible second, Ilya had sent two photos.
The first was the nightstand beside Shane's bed, where his boring hockey book and sexy glasses sat arranged with a strip of condoms and the bottle of lube. The second was Ilya's suitcase open on the floor.Shane had seen it. He had told Ilya, when he'd skated up to him during stretches, that leaving the suitcase open there was a tripping hazard. Ilya had laughed him back to the Metros bench.
He wasn't laughing now.
OR: Shane gave Ilya the code to his condo before the game. With Shane hospitalized and his status uncertain, Ilya embarks on a quest to get his stuff back.

He moved to swing his legs out from under the blankets, only to feel one of them get snagged on something: Ilya’s ankle was wrapped around his own, knee pressing into Shane’s thigh. When he tried to wriggle it free, his boyfriend resisted and pulled his leg in closer. A taut arm reached out and sleepily tugged Shane back down onto the mattress. He gave in easily.
“I thought you were asleep.” Shane whispered, tersely.
He felt a small stab of irritation too. Once again, Ilya had gotten in the way of his workout routine and — even though he wasn’t doing it on purpose — it was hard not to be frustrated about it. Shane needed this. The only way he had been able to soothe his racing thoughts about flunking out of the NHL next season was by reminding himself of his plan to work out early in the morning. Now, his anxiety soared, but it felt like annoyance. Why didn’t Ilya understand that he needed to stay in shape? Didn’t he see how hard Shane had to work to keep up with everyone else?
“I woke up.” Ilya’s voice was husky with sleep, “Come back to bed, moya lyubov.”
