Ilya hears the door opening before he sees it. He sits up sharply, already angling his phone towards his chest, thumb hovering over the End Call button. Shane doesn’t speak, though Ilya watches his expression shift into something grave and concerned. They both know the routine at this point; it wouldn’t be the first time this week Ilya has ended a call abruptly to avoid interruption.
The head that appears in the doorway is far lower than he expects it to be, and it takes him a moment to fully register.
“Zhenya?” he asks, frowning. “Are you alright?”
The girl nods, her little hand still clutching the door handle. “Can I come in?”
Or: Shane and Ilya speak often, while Ilya is in Moscow for his father's funeral. Tonight, Ilya has company.

That’s an easy one. “My wedding day.” Fuck, John can still remember how he’d felt, how his heart had wanted to burst with emotion as he stood there watching Olivia walk down the aisle, Lemar at John’s side. She’d been beautiful, the most beautiful he’d ever seen her, and Lemar – Lemar had given possibly the greatest best man speech in the history of best man speeches. “He gave this speech – I thought he was going to embarrass me, tell all my secrets from boot camp –” John had threatened him about that very thing the day before and Lemar had laughed him off, “but instead he talked about how seeing Olivia and I together made him believe in love. How we –” John has to clear his throat against the emotions welling up, “we were the perfect partners, and he was so lucky to get to witness our love story.”
And now that’s all over. The happiest moments of John’s life, gone in the blink of an eye. Lemar is dead and Olivia is gone and John is unrecognizable from the man he’d once been.
Tears slip down his cheeks one by one. Bob laces their fingers together and just – just holds his hand. And it’s – John doesn’t know whether to laugh or not, because he’s never held hands with a man before. Never had a reason to. And if you’d asked him a year ago, he might’ve thought the whole idea preposterous. But now it’s – Bob’s touch is the only thing tethering him to the ground.
