Alexander Payne had few personal items with him in the trenches. A wooden carved cross his father had gifted him years ago, on the day he first left for St. Hilarion's. Flowers he pressed carefully between pieces of paper, waiting for them to dry so he could send them home to Anna, his bride-to-be. A few assorted letters from friends. A picture of him and his parents, as stiff and lifeless as they always seemed to be. Most precious to him, however, was the singular photograph of his younger brother Edwin and the treasured few letters the younger boy had sent. These were stored more carefully, at the top of the tin where they were less likely to be crushed.

Summary
There was a harsh knot of barbed wire straining his throat.
Edwin thought he was free, that he’d never need to do all this again, but there he was, standing in front of his full-length mirror staring at a person he could barely recognize. The fact that the stupid Saint Hilarion’s was forcing him to go by his dead name, out of all things, definitely was a hate crime, and for what? A change in the principal? A change in the laws? He’s been in testosterone since he was sixteen, it’s not like anyone would be checking what he’s got down there. Of course, his parents were furious, they threatened to sue, but the new principal looked like he was trying not to laugh.
Or: Edwin goes back to Saint Hilarion's college as a second year literature student, except they changed principals and the new one is as bigoted as your average racist uncle. It looks like things will get bad, but hey, at least Edwin has Charles' full support, not to mention the new friends he could make if he dares to go out of his comfort zone.

Summary

Summary
It feels like most waking moments that Edwin isn’t practicing his set or warming up his vocals, he spends running. He spends on the track around the rim of the ship, earbuds in his ears, jazz the only distraction he has from the slap of his boots against the track, the burn of his muscles, pounding reminders of the fact that if he stops for even a moment too long to think about things, they will gnaw him down to the bone-
The cuffs of Edwin’s employee uniform feel too tight, and he spends what feels like half of his time adjusting them, trying to make it feel like he doesn’t have a cuff locking him to this ship.
But it’s hard to ignore the fact that he can’t lose this job, this place to stay.
So he runs, because if he’s on the rarely used crew track, he won’t bump into the cruise director making his rounds throughout the ship, and he won’t have to deal with the way that dread sits in the bottom of his stomach like an anchor.
(Cruise ship singer Edwin Payne didn't expect for life to turn out this way, his high school sweetheart long in the dust, his boss harassing him.

He flies out of the open door then, up and away into the sky. He flies over the town, over Mick’s shop, over The Tongue and Tail, over the library.
He has no idea where he’s going because his body is screaming at him to return, to return to Esther and his cage and where he’s supposed to be, but he knows this is his one chance, his one opportunity to finally be free. So he flies. He catches an updraft and soars high above Port Townsend, above the lighthouse and the shoreline and the Visitor Centre. It’s incredible. He hasn’t been able to stretch his wings in so long and hasn’t been able to truly fly without restraint in decades.
He turns at an angle and flies along the coast, about to loop back around towards the town when it happens. When wings and feathers transform into hair and skin, and Monty falls.
