Summary
Finn Whitman discovers the DHI program is more than it seems. He and the other DHIs work after dark to save the the Magic Kingdom from a mysterious evil, only to discover the stakes are much higher than they were told.
Re-imagines the original story with the main characters aged up to college program participants. Also there's actual world building and a functional magic system. Starts more or less in the fall of 2019 but mostly ignores exterior world events.
I don't think spoiler warnings are super necessary as I'm mostly ignoring the original plot anyways.

“She…?” Willa’s mouth opened in a silent gasp. “Wait, is this about–” She couldn’t help but smile. “Dude! I fucking knew it!”
“You knew what?” Jess turned around slowly.
“Gaydar may be a stupid term but it’s very real.”
“I’m sorry, gaydar? What–” Jess shook her head and closed her eyes. “What the hell is happening?”
“Hello?” Willa waved a hand in the air. “Raging bisexual over here! Keep up, Lockhart. I knew I sensed a shift in Charlie recently, but I thought it was just her finally moving on from Maybeck. Guess I was right.” She stroked her chin thoughtfully. “In more ways than one.”

Except, one day, in the wake of her Imagineering grandfather's mysterious disappearance, a young teenager discovers that--just maybe--the Overtakers aren't. And if the Overtakers are real, the Kingdom Keepers must be too. The burden falls to her and her best friend to find the Keepers before the Overtakers plunge the world into shadow, or to take on the challenge themselves. After all, no world remains in shadow. There is always someone willing to spread some light.
