Her stomach dropped at his words, at how naturally the response came. She felt the shift then, subtle but undeniable, like the floor tilting a fraction of an inch beneath her feet.
“That’s not better,” she said, the words leaving her before she could change them.
“No,” Mapic agreed calmly. “It’s just honest.”
The space between them felt suddenly heavier. He wasn’t pushing. Wasn’t forcing her. Just stating a fact, like gravity or time passing. And that, more than anything, unsettled her.
Because honesty wasn’t supposed to feel like this.

or Abyss kidnaps Ro because they think he’ll help them convince Jumper to join the cult. Cult shenanigans and everyone gets kidnapped at least once and people rescue people when they don't need rescuing.
