Summary
When he read the caller ID at two thirty-one that morning, the stab in his chest told him this would be no social call.
"Doc." The kid's voice was wound tight with worry. In the background raged garbled chaos and what sounded for all the world to Doc like the bark of a baby seal. "I-I need you."
Lightning and Sally’s toddler battles with an awful bout of croup, an experience that has Lightning unconsciously shifting his parenting style—and not necessarily in a good way. As always, it takes the wisdom of his mentor to set the racer straight.

Summary
Acting on intuition and a sickening touch of worry, Doc cupped a hand to Lightning's forehead.
"What?" the kid asked.
"You're racking up a fever."
"Oh." The unnatural calm in Lightning's voice sent more shivers down Doc's spine than any scary story ever could. "Yeah, that seems right."
When Doc takes Lightning camping after a race, he didn’t expect things to go so wrong. Looking back, he should have…

“I think it's time for you to take a trip to the hospital." He had to hand it to Doc, the man was hiding his worry well.
Shaking his head proved to be a mistake the second he did it and Lightning squeezed his eyes shut against the rising nausea. "Pass."
"Lightning." Ah... And there was that classic warning tone. "You need a doctor."
"You're a doctor."
"Don't you think that if I could do anything about this, I would?“

Summary
Finally stopping on all fours, Doc was able to take in the crushed heap that was now the 95.
“Kid, you alright?” During the crash, there was nothing but static on the headset. Now there was nothing. Complete silence.
“You gotta say something, kid. Tell me you’re alright.” The silence on the other side of the headset made Doc’s heart stop. It’d be different if he could at least hear his breathing but there was nothing.

Summary
When Doc woke up, Lightning was in the same position he fell asleep in which was odd because the kid couldn’t sit still if his life depended on it. He decided to let the kid sleep a little more, hoping he’d wake up once Doc had gotten everything ready.
He hadn’t.
The race wasn’t until four that afternoon, but there were still a handful of pre-race activities they needed to take care of. Pulling the covers off Lightning, the kid still didn’t move. Doc shook Lightning’s shoulder to wake him up, but that hadn’t worked either.
“Kid? Get up, we gotta go.”
Still nothing.
When Doc grabbed his wrist, his fingers grazed where his pulse was. It was slow, even for someone who was sleeping. Going in for a real observation, his pulse was indeed abnormally slow. Now he was concerned. Why was his pulse so low?
“Lightning?” Shaking him a little harder, Lightning was yet to stir at any action Doc took. Doc leaned in and raised his eyelids to find that his pupils were largely dilated. He knew something wasn’t right.
Lightning had been with him all night. What the hell happened?

"Isn't that a bit too fast?" Lightning bit his lip and tried to think of something else. Sweat ran down his face even though it wasn't even warm. Cold sweat.
Doc chuckled. "Too fast? Who are you and what have you done with Lightning?"
"I dunno. We don't want to crash, right?" Think of something else, Lightning. Think of...
The rain...
Squeaking tires...
Doc had warned him, but Lightning ignored the warning, causing him to have an almost fatal crash. He develops a new feeling. Fear- fear of racing. And of course he wants to keep it a secret from Doc.

Summary
To be fair, the kid did warn him.
“They’re like vultures, Doc. They’ll see what you don’t want ‘em to from miles away and they just pick.” He’d said, lounging on top of the small workbench inside the 95’s trailer. “Harv sensors a lot of ‘em but it always gets harder if I’m winnin’.”
Doc laughed, “And we already know you’re planning on going undefeated.”
The grin he got back was blinding. “You know it!” Lightning pulled both legs up onto the bench, sitting criss-cross, “Just let them slide off your back. They all want their soundbites and one liners so they can rile up the veteran’s fan bases and give the commentators somethin’ to yap about.” he waved off the idea before his voice got quieter, softer. “Just…don’t let them see it gets to you.”
Or; Winning means everyone wants a piece of Lightning McQueen. Too bad there's some pieces that are best left alone.
