Pidge’s real name isn’t even Pidge; it’s Katie. Those two should be the same person, but Katie had to hide so many aspects of her life to become Pidge that maybe they aren’t. Maybe Pidge is a disguise, a false identity constructed by the real Katie. But her entire Garrison life is built on what everyone thinks about Pidge. In a way, her life is centered around a lie. -

Tucker purses his lips. Danny has gained a reputation for sleeping in class, for being impossible to wake unless one of his friends is the one shaking him. There was only one class Danny had without either Sam or Tucker, and the single time he’d ‘fallen asleep’ in that class was the beginning of one of many Incidents, although this was more traumatizing than others.
It was at the beginning of this ordeal, when Danny had been falling out of his body left and right. When a teacher had tried to wake the teen and his limp body had flopped to the side, and his head had lolled. He’d slid out of his chair, legs crumpling and twisting on the tile, eyes falling open, unseeing and blank, lips barely parting with not a hint of an exhale even as his head knocked against the corner of the seat.
The teacher had screamed. She’d thought he was dead.
Ha. If only.

Despite all the preaching otherwise, despite whatever bullshit that naive, sheltered philosophers and thinkers expounded upon throughout the ages, humanity was a master in the art of cruelty. It didn’t matter how kind, how selfless, how good someone claimed to be. At their heart of hearts, in their very core, in the essence and fiber and atoms of their being, they could never be rid of that black stain ingrained into the very soul (or lack thereof). A capability to enact a violence most thought unthinkable.
Ghost had known it all his life.
Or: Ghost is, despite all rumors to the contrary, entirely and completely human. And, for better and for worse, so is Simon Riley.

The fic: Ghost careened down a fucking ravine and Soap slipped on his way to EverestSomething I adore about this fic is that it doesn't shy away from the pain and darkness but shows that even a single moment can forever alter your course of history and just because the line you're dancing on is a thin one doesn't mean you should just let yourself fall because it hurts. That.
All the characters are AMAZING. The characterization of "side characters" is deep for a "ship fic." Dare I even say— I do dare say that this is actual romance. The reality and softness and not the couple being the center of the universe but the family and the love of community. (I am not casting shade on those who write differently. I enjoy those just as much lol)
Have you ever heard of freak4freak? Let me introduce you to possessive ass bitch 4 possession ass bitch. 💕 (They're not even that crazy possessive; they're a normal amount for the type of people they are and the experiences they've had)
If you've ever wanted to see Ghost fight himself until the very end (of the fic) just because he's fucking human will denying humanity, this story is for you. Plus, you get familial fluff and angst. What more could you want?
Extra notes/parroting myself:
The reoccurring theme of him not wanting to look too closely at Price, evading eye contact or looks in general, trying to turn away is not lost on me. Some people would think that it means something negative, but I actually see it as trust. The Simon Ghost Riley has a person that he will take his eyes off of and not study, even if it's from embarrassment or something of that matter, and he isn't expecting anything to come for him when he does so. That's a great amount of trust, and I enjoy that [the author includes] it.
This is what it's like when two souls who have been through hell find a way to connect but don't quite know how. You stare at the other person and wonder but in a coalescence of negative emotions. You want to reach out, but you're afraid of burning one or both of you. Everyone has a different coping mechanism, but. but.
Some people can't help but feel pain when they see someone like them because despite it all the hate themselves. Ghost is dealing with that. And I get it.Another symbolism I like: how he describes himself as a beast or animal and the way he speaks of affection and connection because he grew up in a neglectful situation and "scraps" was all that he was allowed, literally and figuratively.
They're not mirrors; they're two hands. They're holding each other. They're guarding the other. They're keeping each other warm. Hands are always connected to bodies, and if they'll break down their walls and let the hand creep closer, they'll be able to touch all of each other.
