Why Do Non-Canon Ships Become So Popular? (And Why Should Writers Rethink When They Do?) by sarehptar
Fandoms: Avatar: The Last Airbender, Voltron: Legendary Defender, 僕のヒーローアカデミア | Boku no Hero Academia | My Hero Academia
27 Dec 2018
Tags
Summary
A vaguely academic examination of the phenomena behind fandom shipping and why certain non-canon ships become exceedingly popular, far overshadowing the popularity of canon ships. This essay touches on common mistakes writers make with female characters and romantic subplots, and suggests a explanation for the enduring popularity of so many m/m ships which have no chance at all of becoming canon. Examples are drawn from Avatar the Last Air Bender, Voltron Legendary Defender (god help me), and My Hero Academia.

Summary
Elsewhere in the multiverse, things go differently.
Batman lets a man fall, or doesn’t; the man breaks, or reassembles the pieces into something resembling beauty; the glittering shards reflect fire, or a kind touch, or distort the grim line of a mouth into an endlessly laughing face.
A stone dropped into a river causes ripples.
Sometimes the water rises, retreats, leaves behind fertile ground and the promise of life. Sometimes it scours everything in its path and leaves only broken rock and crumbling bone.
Sometimes, only silence remains.

There is a big difference between a trans man exploring his identity/sexuality through fanfiction, and a cis writer misrepresenting what it means to be FTM. If you're a cis writer with the best of intentions, I hope these guidelines and resources will assist you in improving your treatment of trans men.
Chapter 1: Writing Guide, FTM Anatomy.
Chapter 2: Gallery of Trans Men.
Chapter 3: FTM Media Recommendations.
Chapter 4: Racism in Trans Headcanons. This guide was originally posted on my old account, which has since been deleted due to transphobic comments, including threats of violence. I have posted it again anyway, because I take this matter very seriously. Do not repost, copy, or in any way plagiarise this guide. But please feel free to share a link to it, so that cis authors can improve the way that they depict trans men. I have tagged characters which are discussed in the guide, and are therefore relevant. If you encounter this guide while browsing those tags, that's why.

[META] But Thinking Makes It So: A Meta-Textual Analysis of Hamlet as Lucifer or Which Parts of Hamlet Did Lucifer Actually "Punch Up"? by TheYahwehDance
Fandoms: Lucifer (TV)
22 Mar 2019
Tags
Summary
Hamlet. Shakespeare’s greatest tragedy and one of his most popular works. But why did Lucifer “punch-up” this play in particular? In the Sandman, Midsummer’s Night’s Dream is inspired by the title character and The Tempest is referenced throughout the DC Presence universe, so why use a dynastic tragedy about familial betrayal, pirates, and depression?
I’m so glad you asked. Please step into my office for a 3500 word meta-textual analysis of which parts, exactly, Lucifer added to Hamlet and how the story’s themes reflect the themes of the show and Lucifer’s life.

TO BOLDLY GO FROM ZINE TO AO3: A Study of Fanfiction Culture in the Star Trek Fandom by TheWriter2
Fandoms: Original Work, Star Trek
29 Apr 2022
Tags
Summary
ABSTRACT:
Fanfiction, or the practice of writing fiction about characters from a specific movie, TV show, or book is a practice that has existed for decades. Commonly attributed to the fanzines created by Star Trek fans in the 1960s, fanfiction has become an international phenomenon. Fanfiction is largely shared online and as a result, my research was conducted in an online setting. After speaking to eleven Star Trek fans who read or write fanfiction and reading the stories they selected for me to illustrate their interests, I have concluded that fanfiction is larger than its written works. Fanfiction is a community and a vessel for social commentary. My findings show how online communities are just as complicated as in-person communities, as well as how further studies of fanfiction communities may provide insight into how individuals regulate informal communities.Bookmarked by Marlinspirkhall

Fannish Nonfiction Archive (Fannish_Nonfiction_Archive) by InsanitySilver
14 Nov 2025
Collection Tags: Meta, Nonfiction, Character Study, Meta Analysis, chapter analysis, Fanwork Research & Reference Guides, Relationship Study, PowerPoint, speculative biology, Worldbuilding
Summary
One day AO3 hopes to have inbuilt sorting tools to separate the fanfiction from the fan-nonfiction. Until that time comes, we've made this collection as a big ol' multifandom bucket for fannish nonfiction / meta authors to have a place to list their works alongside other fannish nonfiction.
This collection will perpetually stay open, unmoderated, and revealed in service of that goal.
